Side Effect from Antibiotic?

My daughter has a sinus infection & an ear infection and the doctor gave us Omnicef. Today when I picked her up from daycare, her sheet said that she had red stool in her diaper. Is that normal?
She was on Amoxclav and that didn't seem to help with the ear infection as it has gotten much worse.

What can I do next?

TOTALLY normal! My son had frequent ear infections until he had tubes put in at 13 months. Every time he was on omnicef he had red stool.

The same thing happened to my son. Daycare called and told me it was blood, so I freaked out and rushed him to his pediatrician. Evidently, only 1% of the population has this side effect, but it is nothing to worry about.

My son has been on Omnicef twice and both times the doctor warned us that he would have red stools. If you mix it with formula it will turn it pink. I am surprised that your doctor did not tell you, b/c both our doctor and the nurse told us that. Just to warn you if that antibiotic does not work she may have to get a rocefin shot, which is a stronger antibiotic, which could have to be given up to three days in a row.

We have been on this several times and haven't had that problem. We however have had loose stools for the duration of the med.

Although Laura said it was normal, this is a medical issue that should still be addressed to your Ped and Pharmacist.
There are usually alternatives that will not harm and/or will have less side-effects for your child.
Good Luck, M. N.

My daugther took Omnicef last month for an ear and sinus infection and it was the one that FINALLY worked! Red stools were one of the side effects, but they definitely went away quickly after she finished the anitbiotic.

Yes, that is a side-effect of that medicine. Every time my pediatrician prescribes my children Omnicef, she reminds me that it can make stool turn red, even as dark as appearing to have blood in the stool. My children have never had the side-effect but she always warns me anyway.

The cure can be found in chiropractic treatments.

There is another alternative you might try. Have you heard of the mangosteen fruit? I am a distributor for the original company that brought this amazing whole-fruit juice drink to the United States. We are not allowed to say that it will cure conditions/diseases per FDA rules & regulations, as Mangosteen is not a drug. But I, my husband, my family, and many of my friends have benefited greatly from drinking the juice. This juice has no side effects. It is safe enough for newborn babies.

I recommend you give her a couple drops to begin along with plenty of water. Increase the dosage gradually to about one half ounce two or three times daily; allowing her body to adjust to the consumption. The first thing that will happen is the elimination of toxins from her body, which might be revealed in loose bowels. You can purchase the juice at my website: www.Mew.Gomangosteen.net

It is sad that the medical establishment gives more and more drugs to treat the effects of other drugs. This doesn't make sense, because ALL drugs have side effects. A drug is a drug, whether prescribed or illegal. Natural is always best.

Yes, the red stool is a side effect of Omnicef. Our doctor warned us about this ahead of time, but I did not realize HOW red it would be. After she is off of if for at least one day, everything will return to normal. On a side note, my chiropractor had been asking for me to bring her in to see if he could help (she had a lot of ear infections). I was hesitant, however, we gave it a try. She has not had an ear infection since. We started her there at 6 months and she is now 8 1/2 months. I cannot be for sure if it was him, her age or both, but it helped us.

Hi L.!
No worries about the different color stools. My son is on the same antibiotic and our pediatrician had forewarned us that his stools may be a red and/or an orangish color, due to the items used in the antibiotic. Tell the staff at the daycare to not worry, it's what the medicine is suppose to do!

Um.....Have you gone to a chiropractor who works with children? Some children have a hard time with antibiotics. Most chiros who work with children can give a minor adjustment that will open up the eustacian tube and allow it to drain naturally without the need of meds.....Oddly enough, the same nerve that IT is on is also the one that goes to the sinuses...Also, don't forget to get some childrens Probiotic (Natures Sunshine is best, and most healthfood stores carry it) when she is done with the antibiotic, to help her get the "good" baceria back into her body.....HTH

Red poop is a totally normal side effect from taking Omnicef. I'm very surprised your child's doctor didn't tell you that! That was the first thing my daughter's doctor warned us about. Omnicef is a great antibiotic - seems to be stronger than most. I think they give Omnicef when other antibiotics just didn't quite do the job.
GOOD LUCK!

Naturopathic and Chiropractic physicians have an excellent history at stopping ear infections. It is so much simpler than most people imagine. My son has survived 2 decades with no antibiotics, ever! He is very healthy, but went through all the normal colds, minor infections, etc.

As far as I know, the chiropractor we see has stopped the 'routine' of ear infections in ever baby and child he has ever treated for it, and he treats a lot of children. He explains that these infections are the result of bacteria being attracted to a fluid build up in the ear canal. These are generally normal bacteria found on the skin and in the hair of all healthy people. They are simply attracted to the fluids as if it were a pool party. Then he teaches them to 'drain the pool' with a simple massage technique behind the ears and instructs them to do this after every diaper change. The infection is relieved within 3 days. Then he has them come back to explore which allergy (almost always a food allergy) caused the fluid build up. Then they figure out the best way to handle that particular allergy and the ear infections stop. I cannot imagine why so many MD's still reach for antibiotics first. Whatever happened to "First, do no harm"?

I always recommend that every parent buy the book, 'Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child'. It is an essential reference book for raising kids. You can look up so many common conditions and learn what an MD would do, what an ND would do, what the nutritional considerations are, etc. One thing I never recommend is that you try mixing things on your own. This is a good book to help you decide which sort of practitioner to employ for each situation, not a replacement for educated diagnosis. Especially, never mix nutritional or herbal remedies with prescribed meds without discussing it with your pharmacist, at least. I have found that my pharmacist often answers my questions better than MDs are able to. MDs have great diagnistic skills. I just feel they need to broaden their options for treatment of conditions that are not critical enough to require invasive proceedures.

I would consult the doctor about refering your daughter to an ear and nose specialist. If the doctor refuses I would find another child doctor. I experienced a child doctor that did not care. Do you get your child a physical every year? The red stool in her diaper, i would consult a doctor right away. When my kids were growing up they got a physical every year. It gives you peace of mind. You should always pray and ask the LORD for guidence.

My recommendation is that while she still has the infection, see if you can't get her into an ENT to have her looked at. It could be that she is building up fluid on her ear drums and may need tubes. We are on our 2nd round of tubes and just had our tonsils and adnoids out and I have to say I have a completely different child. BTW- NONE of this was diagnosed by a ped. but instead by a speech therapist who suggested I go to an ENT.

If you don't like the Omnicef try Cefcil.

Omnicef is made from Coral so naturally it will turn her stools red and sometimes slimey from the mucus. Me son has been on that antibiotic several times. Not to worry her stool will return to thier normal colors soon. :) E.

Hi L.,

I have been the route of ear infections and anitbiotics with my first boy. After awhile I realized that he was not sick, the ear infections were not very bad and noticed the antibiotics were not working...the nurse kept prescribing more and more antibiotics. My heart told me there was more to it. So I refused the last antibiotic, did some research and found that some food allergies will cause ear infections! So removed all dairy products from his diet for 1 year. Since then he has never had an ear infection...ever! By the way he will soon be 7 yrs. old.

There are options out there to ensure the calcium, and other benefits of cow's milk. Look into Rice Milk, Goat Milk, Soy Milk, etc. Check out your closest health food store for alternatives.

Best Wishes,

J. H.

yes, it is completely normal and your doctor should have told you that it was going to happen. My son 7-9 ear infections within 5 months and at 9 1/2 months he got tubes. since then he has only had one infection and it was rare.
that was in aug. 07. now he is 17 months old and doing great. i strongly suggest doing both chiropractic and pediatric visits. my son just needed his neck adjusted and he was fine a couple of times.
if your child gets to where the doctor is wanting you to give them antibiotic shots because of ear infections then you need to push tubes and/or a second opinion.
i had chronic ear infections as a child and had to get tubes because of a hereditary condition. there is indian in my family and the high cheek bones affect how the ear tube grows down.
just make sure that you are always looking at your options.
