Still Sick at 17 Weeks

I am pregnant with my second child and due in September. I had a pretty rough first trimester, but am doing better the past month or so. One of the challenges I have been having is that any form of liquid dairy, and foods that are sweet make me pretty sick. I have been avoiding dairy besides cheese, as well as sweets, and even most fruit. I keep trying to eat a little bit of fruit here and there just to see if this phase is over. But, this phase does not seem to be ending. I guess the positive thing is I am avoiding empty calories with desserts and getting a lot of nutrition from meats, beans and veggies. Just curious if anyone else has had this experience and if it eventually went away. I had to avoid milk when I was pregnant with my first, but was able to substitute with soymilk. Unfortunately, this time around I can't seem to handle soymilk either. I really miss ice cream and fruits! Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

The prenatal vits were the culprit for me my second pregnancy. After my first trimester was over when my nausea wouldn't go away my friend told me the prenatals used to make her sick. Once I tried not taking them it went away almost immediately but when I took even half a day I would have nausea for 2 or 3 days afterward. I stopped taking them after that and just focussed on nutritional eating.

P.S. Craving sugar is a sign that you might need protein. I didn't know this my 1st pregnancy, ate fruits & sugar nonstop, and had to go for a 2nd round of glucose testing b/c my sugar was high. I knew about it the second pregnancy and ate more protein and craved way less sweets and my first glucose test was normal!

being sick throughout yoru whole pregnancy is relatively common. BUT I've been told that if you combine Unisom and B-vitamins it's supposed to help with the sickness. My sis was very sick with her last baby and her Midwife told her to take that and she said it worked well most of the time. I'm not sure about the dosage so you'll have to talk to your dr. about that part. I hate being sick I'm sorry you have to go through this! Hope all the advice helps here!

I was sick the ENTIRE pregnancy, didn't matter what I ate. If you can identify the foods that are causing it, then that is great! My prenatals made me sick too, changing brands helped, but still sick the whole time, twice during labor too! Just keep doing what you are doing, you may not be able to handle milk the entire time. Just the way these things go sometimes.

with my first i could not even hold water down for the first almost 6 months. My second, pretty much every thing i eat, only half stayed down until the almost 8th month. My third i was not as sick but did throw up a couple times a day until the end of the 8th month. Each one is different, but it still boiled down to my body reacting to the hormones. they have some lolly pops that are supposed to help with the sickness, of course i found them after my third was born. Not sure how well they work. Also, talk to your doctor about it. They may have some suggestions. One thing was pretty clear that with all 3 any tomatoe based sauce was a big no, i paid dealy every time I ate it. and I pastas.

I don't have any info regarding food intolerances and pregnancy. However I am allergic or intolerant of milk and raw fruits. I've found that I can use rice milk. There are two versions; original and vanilla. Othe original is not sweet.

And even tho I can't eat raw fruit I can eat it when it's well cooked. I buy the fruit preserved in juice. It has less sugar. Sometimes I cook the fruit myself without adding anything else except water.

I sympathize with you. It's the pits to not be able to eat fruit and drink milk. I tried goat milk and loved it but my system couldn't tolerate that either.

Do you take prenatal vitamins and get them prescribed through your doctor? I noticed that part of my upset stomach and nausea was due to the prenatal pills prescribed from my doctor. With my son, I requested grape chewable prenatals. YES! They have them! Helps with the upset stomach. With this preg, I opted for organic prenatals, which are a lot less harsh than regular prenatals. I haven't had much of a upset stomach since the switch. I also have a small prob with some soy milk. I am lactose intolerant (preg related) and switched to Lactaid lactose free milk. I haven't had much problems since then. You could also try doing cheese sticks or do what I did as a last resort...TUMS. They have loads of calcium in them. Hope this helps. :D P.S. I'm due in Sept as well! Congrats!

I had that exact same set of things - when I was 4 weeks along, I loved sugar, but for several weeks after that I couldn't tolerate it at all. I've always been somewhat dairy sensitive, but I couldn't deal with it at ALL during my first trimester.

At about 19 weeks, I started craving milk, and found I'm actually more tolerant now than I was before I was pregnant! It's crazy. And the sugar cravings kicked in about the same time - I have to watch it, or I'll eat too much sugar. And my energy level started to come at about that point, too.

Everything gives me heartburn, is the only downside.

Isn't it weird how you can have two pregnancies, and they're totally different? Hang in there!

well, it's liquid dairy, but I'd recommend trying some plain kefir, a cup every morning. It cured my morning sickness magically. Kefir has way more cultures than yogurt, and they stay in your tract, whereas yogurt cultures don't.
Best wishes!

Try hemp milk by living harvest, the chocolate milk is delicious! And high in protein. There's coconut ice cream called coconut bliss... yummmm!!

I drank smoothies with greens added and without adding ice as the cold would upset my stomach.

When I ate raw dairy or goat I handled it a lot better. Reason being is that the enzymes are still in tact.

sweet, sugar and chocolate made me sick. Also try a dessert with pecans, carob powder (chocolate tasting but not chocolate), with light-raw agave syrup.

For some crazy reason pregnancy really messes with your body. With every one of my pregnancies there was something that I couldnt tolerate food wise (and smells). So just avoid what is making you ill and try to find a substitute for your dairy (soy milk, or even lactose free milk). I know how fruterating this is, and trust me you are better off not eating what makes you sick, listen to your body. As usual it doesnt hurt to run your concerns by your OB at your next appointment.
