Still Reading Out Loud?

I should preface my question with the fact that my 8 year was recently diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum. I don't know if that's related or not ... sometimes I just need a reality check.

My 8 year old has been reading like crazy this summer. Yay! But he doesn't know how to read to himself. He doesn't do it silently. Sometimes that's no problem, as he does like reading in his room. But sometimes it just drives me bonkers.

Is it common for an 8 year old to still be reading out loud? When I tried to talk to him about it, he didn't seem to understand what I was wanting him to do.

I plan to mention it to his teacher when school starts, but I'm just wondering if this is common, and I just need to be patient.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for the reality check :-) Sometimes that's exactly what I need.

I mean this very kindly - "I think someone is about ready for summer vacation to be ending"!! (Meaning - mom!)

Congratulations on having an avid reader. Feel free to use an earbud headphone to listen to music yourself (maybe one in and one out in case someone needs to get your attention).

This phase will pass!

We all read out loud at will - when ever we want anyone else to share in what we are reading.
This has saved us when ever a new book came out and we all wanted to read it at the same time - which is often!
If he's good at this - maybe your son can read to/with other children who would love to hear a story.
School will cover reading silently with him eventually - let them handle it.
In the mean time - enjoy his reading!

Two of my kids are avid readers and when they first discovered their love of reading ( they read out loud. Not all the time, but often enough. They also talked when playing Lego or playing with toys on their own. Some kids like hearing the sound of their own voice I guess! They do out grow it.

Some children just love to hear themselves talk. Perhaps this is why. OR, it could be part of his autism.

I would ask whoever is working with you on this diagnosis. Certainly you could ask the teacher, but I would definitely consider that it may not be just because he's 8...
