Staying Dry Through the Night

My daughter is 3 1/2 and has been potty trained since she was 2. She makes it through naps fine, but when it comes to night its a completely different story. She wakes up all the time wet (through a pull up)We have tried not giving her anything to drink after 7:00. She goes to the bathroom before she lays down, and we wake her up when we go to bed (usually around 12:00), but by that time she is already a little wet. I am completely out of ideas and hoping you girls can help!

What can I do next?

Sounds like a sound sleeper or small bladder. She probably can't help it and will eventually outgrow it, but maybe not for years. I know you don't want to hear that! I had 2 like this and some of my grandkids too - not all. It runs in families and is a real pain, but moms today are blessed with pullups and similar products. I washed bedding daily for years and years. One didn't outgrow it till puberty! 2 of her kids did it too.

staying dry at night is a developmental milestone.. you are waiting for her brain to wake her up and tell her she needs to use the potty.

There is nothing that you can do to help this.

She will be dry when she is mature enough to be dry.

My friends son is 13 and still wears pull ups..

What ever you do - dont shame her or punish her.. She is a asleep and she cant control wetting when she is asleep.

Try a bigger pull up or huggies overnight diaper or good nights-- there has to be something that will hold the urine and keep the bed dry.

Have you tried just putting her to bed in panties? I know it seems counterintuitive, but her brain is trained that panties are not for peeing and pullups/diapers are. Maybe if she wets at night for a few times, her brain will get the signal.

If after a week, it doesn't, then it's a good bet that it's a developmental thing and you just need to wait it out. Good luck.

I just read a potty training book that says night time dryness can take up to age 5 since it is a signal from the brain. Some kids sleep real hard and do not even realize they wet the bed.

The best thing is to not punish, and just let her grow out of it. If she still is wetting after 5, talk to your pediatrician.

I read the No Cry Potty Training Solution.

My daughter (3.5 as well) use to go in her diaper before she went to sleep, then would take it off and go to sleep in underwear witout me realizing it. Now what I do is I wait until she is already asleep then I put her diaper on... It could be tricky with a pull-up though. I don't use pullups for three reasons, they are harder to put on a sleeping child, they are more expensive, and they don't hold as much urine.
Try waiting until you guys go to bed to put her pull-up on... or whatever, I'm sure she'll grow out of it. My daughter rarely even goes in the night anymore.

Hi N., you are doing all you can do at this point. I have a 3 1/2 too, and am experiencing the same thing. I don't use pull-ups anylonger (after changing the bed linen daily). I buy the underwear/good nights now. They come in larger weight sizes. My son is in 3-4T. He still wets at night, but the bed is dry and his pj are too. I have tried everything you have also, without luck. I am just hoping he outgrows it. I am looking forward to the responces from the other moms. Hang in there.

This may sound odd but maybe it is the types of drinks she is consuming during the day. We used to give our 3 yr old a lot of Propel (flavored water) and he was wetting through his pull up nearly every night. Propel has a fair amount of sodium in it. As soon as we stopped giving him so much during the day (and especially not close to bed time)he not only makes through most nights and when he does go, it is not enough to go through a pull up. Check the sodium content on what she drinks mostly.
Some other suggestions I got for when he was wetting through the pull up was to put an extra sheet and pad on the bed so when he did wet through, I just took off the top sheet and pad and didn't have to make the bed at 3 in the morning!
And make sure she is in the appropriate size of pull ups. We had leaks from too big of a pull up AND too small of a pull up. Arghhhhhhh!!!

For some kids it just takes longer. It is often is not a behavoral issue but a nuerological issue. The brain is not able to send the proper signal to get her up in time. I would just put pull ups on her at night until she is dry through the night. I would also keep doing what you are doing.
Some kids are 5 years old before they stay dry at night.
