Stay-at-home Dads

Hello. A male friend of mine recently got laid off of work and is now staying home with his 3-year old daughter most days. He is bummed about being out of work and is lacking on ideas of things to do with his daughter. I was wondering if any one you know of dad's groups that meet during the day. I know with the unemployment rate at an all-time high, there must be others in his position. Please advise.

I know the Lake Orion library has children programs. Maybe check and see if your library has something like that. Soon it will be nice and warm so maybe they can head out to the parks, blow bubbles, art time at home (my daughter is 2 and loves to do art stuff).

Good Question.
My hubsnad and I both got laid off.
I was able to get my old job back this week. So my husband will be home with our daughter. We pulled her out of day care. I suggest telling your friend about story times at his local libtray. Also most malls have a kids area where kids can play.

The Roseville Parks and Rec has an indoor playground on Tues and Thurs from 10:30am until noon, my husband takes my kids there every week.

My husband watches our son while I work.. I work typically 3:30-8pm with some breaks in there to relieve him and work from home, but my husband finds things to do.

He goes grocery shopping or to home depot or runs errands. He takes DS to the Rochester library to play, to the park (even when it's a bit colder), Kiddie Klub (after 5pm it's $5) or you can look for coupons, he could probably find playgroups too to hang out with.. maybe look online for Dad's groups?, perhaps even just finding 1-2 other dads that are staying home and get together with them, Dinosaur Hill I think has free programs, the Troy nature center has periodic things.

If you have some expendable cash you could have him check out gymboree, Kindermusik, gymnastics.. they have some parent tot classes for that age so he could meet others parents too. (I'm biased to KI since I teach the classes, but I take my son for gymnastics too).

Hi J.,
Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions for you at this time but am hoping to read some of the replies you get. My husband is in the same position...has been laid-off since a few weeks before X-Mas. He's staying home with our 5 y.o. son and (almost) 3 y.o. daughter everyday. I know they're all going bonkers but, since money is tight, its not like he can take them out everyday and spend money on activities. How about it ladies...what do other stay-at-home dads (or even moms, for that matter!) do with their children all day, when money is tight? Thanks!

Here are a few fun ideas for activities: 1) Great Lakes Crossing has a very nice play area for the little ones and my kids always loved going to Bass Pro shop to see the huge fish tank with a variety of fish and turtles. They also have an area with ducks that are fun to watch and it only costs the gas to drive there. 2) spread out a blanket on the living room floor and eat a picnic style lunch - let them help you pack the sandwiches or snacks and go for portable drinks that are less likely to spill - make it a fun "date". 3) boardgames even for the littlest ones like HiHoCherrio, Candyland, matching games 4) kids love to build forts so let loose and take those couch cushions off and collect extra pillows or blankets from the house and have a ball or if you have a small sized tent, set it up indoors and have a daytime camping trip or maybe even a one night sleepover 5) go on a "hiking" adventure through a local park or the Cranbrook grounds are beautiful - make a list of things they should look for along the way and collect (bring a paper sack) - tell them they can show Mom/Dad later what they found - things like a pinecone, a brown leaf, a blade of grass, a smooth stone, etc. Let me know if you'd like to hear more.
