Starting Home Child Care

I have been a kindergarten teacher for the last 7 years. I had a baby in January and would like to stay home and watch 1-2 children in my home. Has anyone had experience getting started? How did you find people that needed childcare? Do ads in the paper work? I would appreciate any advice on the process!

Hi L.,

I'm a licensed child care provider and I taught as well. I received my license through DCFS because I lived in the city of Chicago at the time. I believe that you can contact the YWCA out there and ask them for further information on how to become a licensed
child care home. YWCA is one of their agencies(DCFS) that assist them with licensing potential providers. You will be given an information packet on what needs to be done in your home in order to prepare before a license representative come out. Basic things must be done for example, outlets must be covered, fire extinguisher is needed, smoke detectors on every level of the home etc. You can advertise in the local paper in your village or you can register your business on the child care referral list. There's free advertising on the internet and try visiting your neighborhood schools and after school programs by leaving your fliers and business cards. Good luck!

I understand that you are just looking into watching children in your home. I have just had a baby in February and am looking for childcare for my 2 year old son and baby for the fall. Let me know if you are interested in taking two children for part-time care. I work as a school psychologist in Darien and am only working 2 days a week starting at the end of August. I work the school year with hours of 8 to 4. You can contact me at ____@____.com or ###-###-#### if you are interested.

Well I've never done it myself but I know that just a couple months ago when I started looking into finding an in home daycare I looked in ALL the newspapers and there wasn't that many, which I found disappointing so I think ads in the newspaper are a great way to start. Also maybe try putting up fliers at a couple local doctor's offices or even salons, also tell your neighbors, word of mouth by someone that knows you helps a lot. That is how I finally found my daycare provider. Those were some places that I looked. Hopefully that will help you.
Good luck !!!
