So a few weeks ago the doctor prescribed iron supplement for my 9 month old because her iron levels were a little low - Now I noticed that her two front teeth (her only teeth so far) have turned grey in the middle - I dont want her poor little teeth to be gray forever - what can I do? More importantly - I'm worried that it will have an effect on her permanent teeth -

What can I do next?

It won't have effect on the permanent. I used to work in ped dentistry. Just take her in and they can run some prophy paste or other abrasive sand over the teeth and they will look good as new. When you give her the drops, put them to the back of the mouth so she swallows without it coming to the front teeth and staining.

I would find an alternate iron supplement! Go to www.vitacost.com and see what they have. You can make a little paste of baking soda with water and use your fingers to gently rub the teeth. She won't like the taste but at least it won't be harmful to her! No toothpaste either! She can't swallow that stuff, nor can anyone else for that matter!

Good luck and I know you will find a better alternative,

This happened to my son. When he went for his first cleaning just before he turned three the dentist said if it was a stain from the liquid vitamins containing iron, then it should polish right off. It did and he has no staining on his teeth and is now almost six. So, don't worry!

That is normal and it doesnt change. My lil brother went through the same thing and the dr and dentist both advised that once they fell out his new teeth would be fine. Good luck.

My son has stains on his baby teeth from the multivitamins with iron. I took him to the pediatric dentist to be sure they are just stains, and nothing else. They assured me that they can easily be removed, and even tested on a spot to see that it can be removed. But he was very little then and did not like it :-) They told me they can remove them completely when he is a bit older and will cooperate (around 3).

I noticed that the stains are better now, as he is not on the multivitamins anymore, and I clean his teeth with a brush and it helps to get rid of the stains.

I would take him to a pediatric dentist to make sure they are due to the iron.

Are you giving her the iron supplement using a dropper, or adding it to something she drinks? I think it would be better to give it with a dropper towards the back of her mouth so it does not contact the teeth as much.

You can also wipe her teeth with a wet wash cloth after giving the supplements, and be sure to clean those two precious teeth with a finger cot or a brush regularly :-)

no way. haha same age, 9 months is when my DD who was taking iron supplement had her front teeth change color. after i cried my eyes out, and mourned what a failure i was as a mom, i took her to see a pediatric dentist. he cleaned them right there and her teeth were sparkly white again.
all was right with the world.
yes, take her in to have them cleaned, the stains will be gone.

My son was given iron drops for slightly high lead levels when he was a teething baby, dark syrupy stuff, his teeth were not effected....maybe it's something unrelated to the iron....

Is it a liquid supplement? Do you give it to her straight or mix it with something. My niece was on iron from birth and is in her 30's and still has to take iron. Her baby teeth were destroyed from it. After it was too late her Mom found out that she could have avoided the rotten teeth by putting the iron in a syringe and putting it past her gums or to mix it with some baby cereal. Check with the doctor and see if the kind she is taking can be mixed with anything to avoid the rotten teeth. Gray is just the beginning of bad teeth and they will get worse..

To be honest, I don't have an answer for you, but remember that they are just baby teeth. She can have nice pearly whites when the big ones come in! :)

When I brought my three boys home from Russia, the youngest had black "stains" on his teeth. Preparing for the worst, I took him to the dentist, fully expecting them to be rotten - turns out the baby home must have been giving him some kind of iron supplement because it scrubbed right off (the other two were in a different orphanage - their teeth really WERE rotten). Also, there was no effect on his permanent teeth.

Good luck!
