Do you give him liquid vitamins? I've heard they can stain teeth brown. I know my nephew hit his mouth a few months ago and it made is tooth basically die. It looks greyish brown now. Luckily it's jsut a baby tooth.
Hi there-
Yesterday I noticed that my 13 month old has brown stains on the upper part of the tooth on all for of his top teeth. I am a little worried about this. I don't know if it's decay or what? I though decay would be more black in color. His other teeth are fine, it's only those 4. I don't let him got to bed with a bottle and I brush his teeth. I tried to scrap it off with my nail yesterday and it wouldn't come off. Has anyone see this on their children before?
Thanks!
J.

My daughter has the same issue, and it's because she has had iron supplements due to anemia when she was younger. Antibiotics can gray the teeth, and fortunately she doesn't have gray. The Dr. and dentist are not concerned, as these are her baby teeth. So if you are using vitamin supplements, speak with the Dr. Rather, I'd speak w/the doctor anyway about it.
That happened to my daughter when younger also, and I never used flouride and always cleaned off gums after nursing before teeth even came-you know, did everything right. I asked her pediatrician and he suggested using a small dot of flouride toothpaste and scrubbing them good---it worked great. I did it for a few days, then realized she was spitting good enough to continue with the flouride toothpaste. Hope it works for you, I know how I felt when I noticed it.
I had a brown spot on my front tooth for as long as I can remember. They said that it was Possibly from having antibiotics as an infant or a high fever. Not sure how accurate that is, as I just went the other day and it has now turned into a cavity.
I would make an appointment to see a pediatric dentist or possibly call your pediatrician and ask them. They might be able to tell you a little more or tell you not to worry, without spending the money.
If you need the name of a low-cost ped dentist, let me know, I took my children to a wonderful place:)
Were you prescribed antibiotics while you were pregnant with him or has he had to take any antibiotics? It could be the result of taking certain types of antibiotics, either him taking them or you taking them during pregnancy. It just has to do with the way the medicine reacts with the calcium in the body, I'm not sure if it will affect his adult teeth as well, though.
Hi J.
yes my son has it as well he is now 11 and more prominant then when he was little the dentist said when he was a baby before his teeth even came in his teeth buds came into contact with floride, probably from tap water?? (it is not the same floride the dentist use on the kids now) it is a perminent according to my dentist, however after braces later in life if it bothers the child (which it does mine) he can try to have some it filed off. i might get a second opinion but if you hear something else i would like to know. Good luck
Hey J.,
My oldest son (18) has stains on all his four front teeth too, and it was caused directly from the ER doctor giving him the antibiotic Tetracycline when he was 15 months old. He had tonsilitis, we had no insurance and I was panicky. I had known of this problem since I was a teenager. One of my early boyfriends had it from the same antibiotic. If I'd just stopped to think about it, I wouldn't have done it. But, now it's too late. Bleaching doesn't work. The only thing the dentist's say can be done for him is to do veneers. Of course this would cost thousands of dollars. Of course, I dream of coming into money and that is the first thing I would do...but we all know how this is! Sorry it's not better news, hon. Keep brushing his teeth. Keep them healthy. Hugs, Kat
Too much oral fluoride can cause stains on your child's teeth.
Hey J. I would definatley get that checked out by a dentist. I was a pediatric dental assistant for years before I had my kids and it sounds like decay on your child's teeth. It will only get worse and it would be best to get it checked out. Good luck!
Sangre de Drago is excellent for dental health and whitens teeth. It is a blood red sap from a tree in the Amazon rainforest. It can be rubbed or brushed on and is totally safe (unlike fluoride toothpaste) if swallowed and actually benefits the digestive system. You could go to my website: www.shootingstarherbs.amazonherb.net if you would like to check it out - or contact me with any questions.
My 11 month old son had the same issue and when I took him the pediatric dentist I was told they were stained and they also needed fillings. And I don't understand why because I brush his teeth, give him juice with less sugar and he doesn't go to sleep with a bottle in his mouth. But the only thing the dentist recommended was brushing twice a day get off the bottle and only 6 ounces of juice a day
Often antibiotics will affect the color of teeth, making them brown. My daughter had that happen.
Hi J.,
Did you give your son antibiotics? I have light brown stains on my top front teeth, that have always been there because I had to have antibiotics when I was a baby. They do not just scrape off--they go all the way down past the enamel on my teeth. I suppose I can get them bleached, not sure if that would remove it or not and cannot afford to spend that kind of money to find out. I have used the over the counter whitening which helps a little but it does not make it disappear. Hope this helps,
L.
