Sporadic Menstruation

I have been nursing my son since birth but for the last 2 month only about 50% of the time since we introduced him to solid foods. I just got my period back last month (8 months after giving birth) but haven't had a 2nd one, yet. I am still nursing about 50% of the time, same as last month. It has now been 30 days. I have been taking the pill (Errin) since my 6 week pp check up. Is it normal/common to start your period then skip a period at this stage in the game? Or should I be prepared for a pink "+" sign to appear in my future? Or am I just being silly and need to wait a few more days to see what happens?

What can I do next?

Mom of four and I breast fed them all. You are nursing, so sporadic/irregular periods are to be expected, even with the pill. Relax! I remember with my first one, missing those periods can be a bit stressful. It takes some getting used to!

I would not worry about it. Sounds like your body just reacted to the change in your milk production. It probably figured out what was going on and went back to the way it was.
If you are on the pill and nursing I would say your chances of being pregnant are pretty slim.

Yes it is normal to stop and start you period during breast feeding. I have experienced this issue with all 3 of my children, and noticed that my periods are a lot more sensitive to schedule on my 3rd child, for instance if I skip a feeding then I will start my period. Not fun but totally worth it. I don't think you need to worry about a little pink + sign anytime soon. ;) Hope this info helps!

I am nursing a 14m old and on the mini pill. I had a 2 day period at 8m, then nothing since. My doc keeps telling me it's normal.

Once my son started nursing less and less (in our case, around 17 months), I started bleeding randomly. It was more spotting than an actual period. I was on Errin from 6 months postpartum to 18 months postpartum. My OB said that if you aren't nursing as much, it isn't unusual to spot a lot while you are on it. I switched to a different pill when my son was 18 months old and it stopped the bleeding but it also completely dried up my milk supply.

It is entirely possible to get pregnant on Errin especially if you aren't taking it at exactly the same time each day.

But that said, I didn't have any actual periods when I was taking it and I was on it for a year.

You are completely normal. Your periods will be sporadic as long as you are nursing - regardless of how much or little you nurse. I remember with my girls, I had to carry "stuff" with me everywhere I went "just in case." It wasn't until after I completely stopped nursing that my periods started to get "normal" again - and that took several months.

As long as you are nursing, there is the possibility of getting pregnant - even if you are not having normal/regular periods. The chances of getting pregnant while taking the mini-pill are less, but still exsist. I would suggest using condoms during intimacy to reduce the chances of getting pregnant again. Once you completely wean your son, you can switch to another birth control pill - it will greatly reduce your chances of getting pregnant AND it will regulate your periods.

Good Luck with everything!

I didn't breastfeed, so I don't know for sure, but I've heard that you can get pregnant while breastfeedig. I'm assuming you're on the "mini pill". I've heard that it's not all that effective. You may want to wait a few more days and take a test. If that comes up negative, I'd check with your doctor to see if this kind of bleeding is normal. Also, you may want to discuss having your thyroid checked with your doctor, because a lot of women have thyroid problems after having babies. Good luck! :)

As long as your breastfeeding at all, even a little, your period can be unreliable. You can still get pregnant, but not having a period for several months doesn't necessarily mean pregnant.

Until you stop nursing completely you probably wont have normal periods. Even after you stop, it could take up to a year to get back on a normal cycle.
I never took any pill while i was nursing so i don't know if that has any effect or not. (maybe)
Always the possibility of that pink sign whe nyour periods come back.
Take care

I think this is fairly common. I had my first period a few weeks after I stopped bleeding from the birth (so probably a little over a couple months after my son was born) but then it never came back until about six or seven months later. Even then, it wasn't back to normal until after my son stopped nursing. It wasn't as regular, was lighter, and the cramping was almost non-existent.

I recommend looking into Natural Family Planning (Billings method) as a very effective way to know when your fertility returns. That way, you know when to start thinking about it!
