I had my daughter on July 12th and at my six week check up my dr recommended errin since I didn't want the depo shot or an iud. I was just wondering how long does it take before errin becomes effective if im also breast feeding? My husband and I don't want anymore kids for another three years but he doesn't like condoms.. Help please.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice.. It really helped. I think we will wait a while before only using birth control. I want to at least be ale to enjoy my 21st birthday. Haha. But for the next three years ill be on some form of birth control and he will have to get use to condoms or we will have to figure something else out. But once again, thank you for your help everyone.

I would give it a full month on the pills.
Breastfeeding can not be 100% reliable as birth control. My first 2 I went 6 months without a period. With my third I went 6 whole weeks before my periods came back, doing nothing different. Just what my body did.
If you can't wait another month then use a reliable back up method of birth control to make sure you do not get pregnant.
Remember, you ovulate before you begin bleeding for your period so you can get pregnant before you even realize your periods are coming back.

Breast Feeding is NOT birth control.

Not sure on the Errin BC.

I haven't heard of Errin, but I used the minipill and it needed a whole month to protect. My doctor gave it to me at the hospital so by the time I had my 6 week check up I was good to go. I assume if it is a pill it is probably the same.

If you aren't allergic to spermicide, then there are several options at the store including the VCF film, and the Today Sponge which will protect you but do not have any hormones to affect your feeding and they aren't condoms. Good luck, and congrats on the baby, July 12 is a great day, it's my birthday too!

Errin is a progesterone only pill (mini pill). Progesterone only pills are recommended for breast feeding women because the estrogen in combination pills can effect your milk supply. I know some dr will write for a combo pill (ex ortho cyclen) after you supply is established but IMO that's two hormones baby is getting versus one (even know its a small amount). With mini pills you MUST take it at the same exact time every day & if you miss a pill you have to use a back up method. I was in your shoes and oral birth control gives me headaches. Oh and you have to use a month until its effective. Hope this helps

A month, and you MUST be vigilant about taking at the same time every day. If you don't, then you have to wait another month (or use another form of birth control during that month).

I took the mini-pill between my 2 kids when I was breastfeeding. But what my OB said to me was this "This is a great option as long as having another pregnancy sooner than you expect wouldn't be a tragedy." It did work well for me, I took it with 30 minutes of 7AM every day, and I did not become pregnant while taking it. But she was making it clear that it's not the most effective option out there and you should be aware of that. After my second child, when I wanted an option that was more reliable, I went with Mirena. Love it.

As for the breastfeeding effect - one of my neighbors was exclusively breastfeeding her first, and she now has 2 kids 11 months apart...
