The other question reminded me of a tradition at my dad's workplace.

When someone goes on vacation, they are supposed to pick up a magnet, and they add it to a giant board,

My parents NEVER go on vacation--the closest they get is coming here to Chicago to visit me sister and I and their grandkids. So, anyways, one year when I was a kid my dad brought me to his office for "Take your Daughter to Work" day. The manager of the office showed us the board and then showed me the magnet my dad contributed. It was a simple black circle, that he mounted on some pretty paper, and then wrote on it "The Black Hole of Calcutta." Hehe, that's my dad!!

So, what is the funniest souvenier you have gotten or given? How about other gag gifts/white elephant gifts?

What can I do next?

HA! My grandfather (stately preeminent surgeon, that nonFamily...we knew better!... Thought had nooooo sense of humor) gave a family friend a box of Viagra once.

A) She's female
B) She's divorced

Why?!?! Because her ex kept quitting his job to the couldn't garnish his wages for child support. it took us all a bit to figure out.

Oh. With a twinkle in his eye he said:

'Because your dick isn't working.'

He was about 80 at the time.

He also (she didn't know it, but I handled his books) made an anonymous deposit of 10k into her bank account.

best weird gift from my Mom: my Sis & I received a box full of wrapping paper, gift bags, gift cards, greeting cards, curly ribbon, & tape. LOL all the way...& we kept saying, "I can't believe you gave me wrapping paper". BUT, you know what? It lasted forever, saved me a ton of $$, & came to be my best friend! An awesome gift, totally unappreciated upon opening & proved it's worth over & over again. LOL

another weird Mom gift: a single paring knife at my wedding shower. One knife. She said it would be my favorite & would last a lifetime. & she was right....it's been 31 years since that shower & I still use it daily!

funky gifts given: my sis is usually the recipient for these! My DH & my Sis mock-fought for years over my Dad's 12gauge shotgun. My Sis said it was hers, & my DH said the gun was the only reason he married me. LOL. So one Christmas, my DH made/fabricated a 12gauge shotgun for her out of scrap metal & wood! It was awesome & she loved it. Still has it & with my approval, inherited Dad's too.

My DH also made an alligator out of logs. It was eerily realistic & he gave it to my Sis, too. Looked awesome in her landscaping!

We gave both of our sons boxes of batteries at various points in their lives. What a lifesaver!

We also regularly give a can of beans to teenage drivers....we slit the label & stash cash under it. We call the gift: Gas Money. LOL

& this year for Christmas...for the $Prize Game....we are giving white TicTacs & calling them "Snowman Poop". Saw the idea on my very fav Pinterest!

Well, I gave my dad a fart extinguisher one year ... it was air freshener in a can made to look like a fire extingusiher. It got quite a few laughs and was used frequently.

On a trip to Louisiana, I bought a souvenir as a present for my mom. A trivet with purple irises painted on it(which she loves) and elegantly written in french, a recipe for How to Boil Water.

A fun wedding gift that we received was a wrapped box with a tag sticking out that said Pull Here. As we pulled, a dollar bill with a message came out. We thought that was it, but then we kept pulling and it was a whole long roll of dollar bills all taped together.

My families got a kick out of me bringing some really "different" stuff to them from overseas. Probably the one that got the most "sound effects" from people was a bag of snack crabs to eat. Yes, they were dried crabs in their shells, and you could eat them. Makes the hair stand up on my arms to remember it. And yeah, some of the guys in the family tried them...

What else? Small octopus pieces, tiny cans of cokes and beer (and I do mean tiny - I can't remember how many ounces they had, but they were slender and no more than 4 inches high). When we went to China, we bought these funny cheap watches that had a picture of Mao on them with his arm up - his arm was the minute hand. The family members were arguing over who got a Mao watch. I loved their sense of humor!
