My neice had to have most of her front teeth pulled a couple years back due to having no enamel on them, while my sister is waiting for them to grow back my neice starts kindergarden this fall and has developed some speech problems forming the correct words for things for example Stephanie is sesony. Does anyone know of any speech therapists in the area, does my sister have to wait for the teeth to come in to even start? Any ideas are helpful. Thanks

What can I do next?

She can contact the school district about an evaluation. Over the age of 3, kids get free special needs services through their school district.

We did private therapy (for occupational therapy, but similar idea) but it turned out where we live the district uses the same therapists in the area that we contacted privately. If we had realized that, or known about the process, it might have saved us quite a bit of money. Of course, not all districts are as speedy/generous with their resources, but the law says they have to do the evaluation.

2 of my three boys are currently in speech thearpy in the carol stream district. The School has to provied services starting on the childs third birthday. however they have 90 days from the date of the written request for an evaluation, to start any services that she may be eligible for. so I would write a request now and your neice may be able to start having some services this school year. She does not have to attened the school to recieve services. She may just need to be brought to the school a couple of times a week to work with the therapist. It all depends on the evaluations and her parents wishes. If I can give you any more info on this please email me at ____@____.com. I have been working with speech therapists and the schools for over 3 years now with my boys.

My triplets are about to start speech therapy and their therapists are from OakLeyden. You might want to give them a call and see if they cover your area.

The local school district in Illinois is required to provide speech therapy if your child needs it. Have the child undergo an evaluation and therapy should be available at the closest public school. It is through a program called early intervention, I believe. Prior to age 3 the therapist visits the home, at 3 and up the child visits the elementary school.

Absolutely contact the school district that she will be attending in the fall. They must do an evaluation. Don't be disapointed, however, if it is a long wait to get in for the intial appointment. At the evaluation they determine what her needs are. If it is determined that she could benefit from service they have 60 days to come up with a treatment plan, called an IEP. You can also supplement with private speech therapy, and some insurance companies will cover those services. She will also be eligible for free speech services onsite at school once she starts kindergarten if she still has a problem. Good luck.

If you live in Chicago, you can go to your local school and request an evaluation by the speech therapist. I'm not sure how this works in the suburbs.

It seems as though everyone has responded with the right answers. My daughter is 2 1/2 and has 9 therapies a week through the states Early Intervention program. The law requires that no child is left behind, so your sister should contact the public school for an evaluation regarding speech Once the evaluation is completed she will have a meeting to determine if her daughter is eligible to receive speech therapy free of charge through the public school district and if so, how it will be provided by setting goals for a Individual Education Program (IEP) This is the case even if she doesn't attend a public school for kindergarten. If she attends a public school she might be eligible for speech during class time otherwise your sister would have to take her there before or after her school session. Also, she should investigate additional provate speech therapy. There are several in the area- Pathways in Glenview is great as is Arlington Pediatric Therapy. They both take certain insurances, so your sister should check with them. We use them both and have been extremely happy. If your sister has any questions she can contact the Illinois State Board of Education at ###-###-#### or ###-###-####. Good Luck.
