Ok...my daughter turned 2 1/2 in April...she will be 3 in October. She started talking WAY sooner than my son did barely speaking at 1 1/2 years old. I can't even count how many words she can say...last time I did I got to almost 100. She can say 3 sometimes 4 word sentences. She knows her A B C's, shapes, some colors. I thought she was pretty normal for her age. But the only thing she has trouble with is questions...and it's not all questions. Because you can say 'Where is your cup?' and she'll find it or 'Where is your nose?' and she'll show you but the other day I asked her 'What is your name?' and 'What is my name?' and she didn't answer me...is this normal? I mean when she wants something she says Mommy and SHE DOES KNOW HER NAME WHEN I CALL HER. I know this might sound crazy...and I'm not worried or anything I was just wondering is this normal? Am I expecting too much from my baby and should I just give it time....? Thanks for all your responses in advance! : )

Time to start teaching her HOW to answer you. If you are near the university, see if they have a children's program you can make use of and let your child be part of it. Many of the college students who are trying to learn how to teach young children, or grad students studying speech pathology, do this.

I did not have your problem with my kids. I did have a child with severe speech difficulties, but he certainly knew his name. I would encourage you to address this now because it will really help your child. Speech therapy isn't just about how to make sounds. Its also about language development and that is very important.

Good luck,
Dawn

I think you just need to practice with her. If she REALLY doesn't know the answer, practice asking her the question and helping her answer it. If she just isn't answering, give her time. Practicing it will help.

They started doing first name, last name, address, and birthday at age 2 in my daughter's daycare. They just practiced it every day, and now my daughter will answer all of these questions. It did take a while, though.

OMG, you are expecting something pretty abstract from her! Of course, you can teach her like a parrot, so that when you say "What's your name" she will say her name. Don't worry!!! Even the concepts of I versus YOU are confusing. At 2.5 yrs she is not even totally aware of herself as a separate being. Sounds like she is a fantastic and smart little girl.

You are expecting way too much of her at her age. Just enjoy her. She
sounds like a normal 2 1/2 year old.

Yeah, I don't think that's abnormal at all. It took me a while to teach my now 5-year-old daughter conversational language skills. I finally made it a daily practice session at bed time. "What is your name?" "How old are you?" and when people would ask in the store, I would make sure to not say anything and let her answer, even if it took her a minute. She'll get it.
