The Phoenix Zoo is close to the airport & a wonderful place. They have lots of fun things for little ones to do. There is also the Phoenix family/children's museum downtown.
I'm flying to Phoenix for the day for my 3yr old grand daughters birthday. Her parents have only lived in the area for 6mo and have had no money so have not taken her anywhere. Where can I take her that is open and she will have fun. My flight arives at 10:30am and I have to be back at the airport at 4:30 pm.
thank you everyone who responded. I wish we had this site in Oregon. I'm going to take her to the Zoo! We have a Zoo in Oregon but it is 3 hours from our house and she has never ben to a Zoo.! This site is one of my fav. The people in Arizona have been very wonderful with all my requests. Thanks again.

If the weather is nice- another vote for the Phoenix Zoo. It is fairly close to the airport. There is a lot to see and you can bring a picnic lunch if you want. Until Sept 30 they are open 7-2 weekdays and 7-4 on weekends. Starting Oct 1 they are open 9-5. Have fun!
A fun place is Makutus Island. But it might be better for age 5-9. My son was 3 when we went and kinda scared of crawling through the spaces.

HAVE FUN!!!!
I would take her to tempe town lake. there is outdoor water play area and you can take a boat ride(sunset time best). there is a new Center for the Arts on water front area--I have not gone yet but may be a nice place to explore. Follow the road to Tempe Marketplace for lunch or shopping (Target,JCPenny, etc) The outdoor market there is quite nice just to sit and relax-see movie-eat-shop etc. Check the local pools for times too. The local library is a great place to explore too. During week and weekend they have great events going on-check their in house listing. Raising Arizona Kids Magazine has a calendar of events going on in valley, check it out at library or go to. Arizona museum for youth is cool, Childsplay theater, arizona puppet theater, Arizona Historical Society has a great play area for young kids. It is endless. Hope this helps.
We went there the other day with my 3 year old daughter and it was amazing. We could have stayed all day. It is open from 9:oo till 4 or 5. $12.50 to get in.....adults are free. Has a snack bar. I could take her there everyday and she would never get bored.........it is kid paradise.
I would recommend the Phoenix Children's Museum. It is close to the airport and one of my favorite places here. I have a 21 month old and a 4 year old and they love it. It is $9 /person but if you decide at the end of the first visit to get an annual pass they include that day's fees onto the total. The year pass for the three of us was $110 so it's a great deal. It could also be a good place for your family to meet people with kids. Hope this helps and have fun with your granddaughter!
The phoenix zoo is always fun especially if you head straight to the childrens area and petting zoo. Tempe town lake is nice - you could go sailing or rent a paddle boat. I believe there is an IMAX theatre close by if they have something for children playing that is always a fun choice as well. I'm sure she will be thrilled just to have you there...so anything you do will be a special birthday treat!:)
How about the zoo? The Phoenix Zoo is right on the border of Tempe/Scottsdale & it is safe & a lot of fun. We used to take my nephew there whenever he would come to visit & he'd love it!
I too am a grandmother to a two year grandson and he loves the Phoenix zoo. It would be very convenient to the airport for you. They also have water features should it be a little warm. A great gift suggestion for her parents would be a yearly pass to the zoo. Its $50 and your granddaughter should be free. We bought one for our daughter, and she takes Jack to the zoo at least once a month. Hope you have a wonder-filled time with her granddaughter!
Hello! Sounds cheesy, but there is always good old Mcdonalds play place. Kids love it. Get a happy meal and ice cream. Free drink refills. Maybe even buy her a Mcd's gift card so she can go once after you're gone and think of Grandma. Also, you could take her to the $ store and let her pick out 3 things. They have balloons! have fun!
The Phoenix Children's Museum on 7th street is great for young kids. Also the Zoo, which is closer to Tempe. D.
