"Special" Baptism Gown

Unfortunately I didn't think of this until both my daugthers had been baptized, but I would have loved to use my mother's wedding gown to create a baptismal gown. She was touched that I had thought of it, albeit too late! :) Best wishes.

I had a white confirmation dress that a good friend and talented costumer made into a beautiful baptism gown. It is so pretty and had some history behind it. I knew I would never use the confirmation dress again, but I am glad I didn't get rid of it. This was a great use and kept lots of great memories with it. My Mom's best friend did that. The custom in her family is to take the wedding gown to a dress maker and use the cloth of the train to make a christening gown. When her daughter grew up and got married, she took her mothers gown to the dress makers again and they used lace panels to fill in the holes where the material had been cut from. It was very beautiful!

Hi,i thought i would put in my experience with my daughters baptism.She wasnt baptized untill age 11 years old,due to her being born a premmie and had health issues for the first year,then other family and health issues popped up so it got put off till she was 11.Since we are catholic,both sets of grandparents and her great aunt wanted the traditional white gown,bonnet,white tights and shoes for her to wear.we enlisted the help of a family friend who is a seamstress and she made a beautiful,white,kneelength,infant style gown with a matching bonnet.I her white tights at target and found the white'mary jane'style shoes in a kids shoe store.her great aunt gave us a white cloth diaper and a pair of white rubberpants for her to wear under the tights.i got her a new undershirt to go with the diaper,rubberpants and tights.the morning of her baptism,we dressed her in the parish nursery and she looked gorgeous.her gown had the boufant shoulders with rows of lace down the front and dainty white bows.her bonnet had the same lace as her gown and had a bow on the back of it.every one who saw her thought she looked very cute and dainty in the outfit.she made her first holy communion two years later at 13 with the little kids and we did the poofy communion dress and veil with her baptismal diaper,rubberpants,tights and the shoes with the dress.

I purchased each of my children their own baptismal outfit. I wanted to get a gender neutral gown before my first was born, so that they could both wear it, but could not find one in time. I am glad that I did it this way as they now each have a special baptismal outfit to keep or hand down if they choose.

I used my wedding gown to make my daughters gown. I had a very simple wedding dress without a lot of material, so I had to supplement material to complete it... but it is now a special heirloom!

I think I may run into this situation too with my second. I have seen some beautiful gowns in the stores. Was there a bonnet or anything else that went with yours that you could use both? I was just planning to get a new one if needed (the family one was my mom's, my sister's, mine, my niece's, my son's, and hopefully the next one too), and reuse a bonnet that my grandmother had made that I used with my son. Then we would have two family gowns/outfits.

I do like the idea of using the wedding gown, but I'm not sure that I could do that to my gown. :)

No ideas about making one, but if you need one pre-made I know my sister-i-law keeps hand-made ones in stock at her children's store in River Falls.
