Christening Gown- Yes or No?

I am wondering if it would be fair for me to get a gown for my second child. My first daughter was baptised on Christmas Day and we put her in a red Christmas gown (not a Christening gown). My daughter now is going to be baptised in the beginning of Nov. but not on any holiday. I was planning on getting her a gown but not sure if this would seem unfair...especially as they get older and would maybe like to use the gown for their child...one has a gown and one just has a dress.
Should I just put my 2nd daughter in a nice dress for the baptism or just go ahead and get a gown?
I haven't talked with my husband about it yet because he's super frugal and would see no point in buying a dress for one day. He'd just as easily get her baptised in a onesie! ha ha.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I am going to get the gown. I've talked with a few friends too who agreed that it would be fine since my first was on a holiday and that's why she wore the red dress.

I agree that as long as you save both dresses, they will both be special.
I had a different situation. Everyone wanted to buy my first a very special and expensive dress and I saw no point. I borrowed the one my niece wore (and apparently her cousin too) and then my second wore it as well. So 4 girls from 3 families have worn this very simple, inexpensive dress and nobody can really claim it for their children.
You don't need a foo-foo dress for the second. I think if you get a nice dress, any color, then they each have a special dress to hold onto. And since it's not an official christening gown, neither should feel slighted later in life.

I'm laughing at your husband! But hey, I've seen babies baptised in onesies, or close to it!

You already know that the clothes don't really matter - it's the baptism itself that is important. That being said, if you want a special outfit, go for it. I did that for my children, shopping carefully to avoid spending a lot of money. You might even check Craigslist or eBay to see if there's anything available second-hand.

One of my daughters wore a traditional long gown (not a family heirloom) when she was baptised. The other girl was way out of the baptism-clothes size when she was christened - she was ten months old by then - so I made a dress for her. Actually, I hand-sewed every stitch, to make it special. (The boys had little outfits, too.)

My children will receive those once-only outfits in due time, and they can decide to keep them, use them, or pass them on.

I bought one because we have an only child and I wanted it to be a heirloom. It was hot and itchy and she was uncomfortable. It was one of the first times she fussed in public. I would buy a supercute knit outfit or comfy dress. Plus, here they are $50.

I tend to be more like your husband, but if you're going to get *something*, I'd get a gown. Being baptized on Christmas Day/red gown can be a special memory for your older girl and she can always borrow this new O. for her child, if she wishes!

I would go ahead with the gown and not feel guilty about your older daughter- how special to have been Baptised on a beautiful day in her own special gown. Your children will compare notes when they are older and look at pictures. Just focus on the thought and care you put into selecting each outfit and don't worry about the "color" of the dress!

Having said that...I also agree with your husband. When my son was baptised we bought a beautiful little "boy romper" at a high-end boutique that was going out of business otherwise we wouldn't have considered something as luxurious as cashmere for an infant. My twin nieces were baptised a year later and one wore my sister's gown and my mother made a similar gown for the other to keep the cost down.

If you (or someone you know) sews, pick a pattern and a fabric and make it!

So glad you decided to get the gown. We used a gown for ours that I wore, my mother wore, my sister, my aunt and her daughter all wore. Once it's over, get it cleaned and store it flat in a dry, dark place with acid free paper to keep it as nice as possible. I have ours in a dresser drawer. I hope your's will last as long as ours has and it will give your daughters a very special feeling if they get to use it for their children.

If you want to put her in a gown then you should do that. One thing that I learned is that when you have two children and they are never going to get exactly the same stuff as each other or do everything that the other gets to do and it is not fair to them or you to try.

I think since you did just a red dress for your oldest, I would say just to buy a fancy dress for your youngest vs a baptism gown.

I would do the baptism gown, and hopefully you can heirloom it for generations to come. Christmas baby will be fine because who gets baptised on Christamas and has a fab red dress? Only her. They will both be fine.

I dressed my daughter in a pure white dress made by Carters. However, she was baptized in the summer so you may have an issue with November. I bet if you do some online searches for plain white dresses you will find one inexpensively and you can add tights and a white cardigan for warmth. Christening gowns are beautiful, but pricey no doubt. The sacrament doesn't require lace or $$$$, just white clothing.

Hello~ Well, your first daughter has her "Christening" gown, a red dress.
Save it for her and tell her it was red because of Christmas. And yes, I would purchase a gown for my second child. That way she has her "Christening" gown. You can choose white or cream because it wasn't a holiday. This way they both have their own. Also, look at Consignment Stores, ads and ask around. It doesn't have to be expensive, it's for a few hours. I would check JCPenny's, Kohl's, Sears, and Macy's. All these stores have coupons as well. Good Luck!
