I only have my Kinect right now because we are waiting to buy a new, bigger tv but you can put anything from:
a painting, a decals, a picture frame, put a shelf and some small decorations, a clock, etc.
I love decorating.
What, if anything is above your tv? We are buying a tv stand which is 30" tall and we have a 42" tv (so however tall that makes it). I am wondering if we should put something on the wall above that. What do you think?

nothing - our living room tv is on a stand, and the bedroom tv is wall mounted. There are pictures decorating the walls in other areas but not above the tv.
We have very high ceilings so we have an entire "gallery wall" above the TV with original paintings, photographs and art pieces. The 42" tv is on a stand on a low mid century danish console and art is arranged above to the ceiling. I think it looks awesome but would only work in a huge room with high ceilings.
What about stenciling? Either something artistic or a phrase/quote?
We have a huge hand carved tiki head from Africa hanging above our t.v with vintage, genuine Ringing Bros & Barnum and Bailey antique circus posters on either side of it.
I love my stuff, I need more cool stuff :)
In regards to YOUR stuff, it's all up to you! I am usually a 'less is more' type of gal, like a small shelf with some neat little knick knacks above the t.v... we just have limited wall space in this house (and tons of windows), so that's why we have all that other stuff up there now :)
This is why I love wall mounting, makes it like a picture itself. There is only two inches above my TV so it is the focal point.
Okay that and wall mounting keeps sticky fingers off the screen. :)
it depends on how high the cielings are in your house .. the tv stand plus the television will be like 5 feet tall you might not have much room.. i know when we got the tv in my basement (the cielings are low) my mom had planned on putting pictures above it but once we got it down there there wasnt much room
Pictures or items of interest should be displayed at eye level when one is standing. I think that at 72" the space is too high for a display.
Our family area (very large area) has twin tv's. The fireplace is in the middle and on either side we have matching cherrywood entertainment centers which hold identical 46" tv's. I do not put anything on top of the centers or wall space. Just more to dust!!
I've seen where some people put something on top of the center like green plants(fake) or something like that for filler. For me, just means more dusting I never get time to do anyway.
I guess it depends on how large the area is and if you want something on the wall. Maybe a custom mirror?
My father is an artist, we have one of his paintings over our tv.
