We're moving the TV over the fireplace. I'd like to buy a piece of furniture to place the cable and dvd boxes, but what type works? Tall tower shelf? I'd love to find something with glass so that it's inside there and the remotes could still work through the glass.
try an open corner cupboard that will blend with your room, My brother found that the TV over the fireplace was too high, you were always looking up. So they purchased a smaller flat screen and built it into the corner cupboard right of the fireplace. The bigger TV is in a downstairs family room. where it can be cranked up and not be a focal point over the fireplace.

What we did was...we got a nice cabinet from Home Decorators...it wasn't expensive and they have a lot to choose from.
We put it next to the fireplace and it holds the DVR from Direct TV and our DVD player - it also has a drawer where we keep Wii games and then a big area under the shelves (which are adjustable) to store movies, etc.

we had to use a corner unit and just FYI I wouldn't recommend the tv over the fireplace (we have since taken ours down and moved it). As someone else already mentioned it's like sitting in the front row of the movie theater. There's also the issue of all the cables and the boxes AND if it's a functional fireplace that you use (especially if it's a wood burning fireplace) the heat from any fires that you make WILL effect the life of your tv and the quality of the picture over time - TRUST ME!
Just things to think about.

my mom told me my cousin bought a radio frequency converter so that he could put all the cable/dvd stuff in another room out of the way, and it's sent wirelessly to his tv!!!

Here's what we are in the process of doing:
We have a slightly recessed space on either side of the fireplace, so we went to Home Depot and purchased storage shelves. They are from rubbermaid and come in white, dark walnut, or oak, and they have different options for the support arms. We are putting the cable box and PS3 on the one side, then getting the wire covers from somewhere like Best Buy to make it look neater.
The shelves are a decent price (I paid about 75 for 3 shelves and 6 arms) and they look really good.

When we were in the market for a large tv and were considering wall-mounting, it became clear that the best way to do it was to have everything recessed and built in b/c otherwise you have cables and wires going down the wall and it doesn't look good. It was too involved and we decided against mounting O. on the wall. We weren't ready to commit to that kind of project!
I was able to find a clear glass shelf that mounted to the wall. I found mine on ebay, but have seen them at circuit city. We had an electric plug moved just behind the shelf and we were able to bungy the cords so they were nowhere to be seen. It was in our previous home, but we had lots of compliments. Good luck!
