Can anyone recommend a few nice songs that I could put into a video scrapbook for my grandmothers 80th birthday? I was thinking maybe something from the 40's 60's 80's and today. I have gotten so much great advice from here, I am sure some of you will have some good songs to share. TIA, K.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses! I have this wonderful video with 152 photos of my grandma on it, and we chose the songs Wind Beneath my wings(Bette Midler), Cant Smile without you (Barry Manillow)and 123 like a bird I sing (Tim McGraw). I watched the video the other day with my mom and cousin, all of us have worked each and every weekend on this upcoming party and anyway we all cried when we watched it. It gives me goosebumps to think about it. As mentioned the big Surprise party is this Saturday night and we just can not wait to share this video with her. If you ever need someone to make you a video for any occasion, I used a lady by the name of Brooke Jenkins, she made it so easy to download the photos to her. Her phone # is, ###-###-####. Also with all of your song suggestions we have made cd's to listen to during dinner and throughout the evening. Thank you again to everyone!

If you'd like a nice older song appropriate for wedding pics, romance, etc... Etta James's "At Last" is great! Another great oldie is "What a Wonderful World". For Christmas or winter pictures, "Baby it's Cold Outside" is always a good song. Hope this helps!

Hymns are my all time favorite. I am a Norwegian Lutheran from Minnesota and grew up being active in all of the departments of our church, music being one. I LOVE sacred gothic choral music such as Handel's Messiah. The large pipe organs with symphony, brass, percussion especially timpany, cannot be beat. I love the pomp and circumstance. Have sung with many choirs and out here in Phoenix, (or Mexico), in the Scottsdale Symphony Choral.

There are soooo many hymns that are absolutely beautiful that I know your mother would enjoy! "His Eye Is On The Sparrow", sung by George Beverly Shea from the Billy Graham team - totally beautiful! "Beautiful Savior" sung by the Concordia College Concert Choir, put to a slide show, Power Point Presentation or video with photos of your mother would be awesome. Either of these would be a very moving and 'tear jerking' segment of your presentation. Way too many to mention! My mother will be 84 this August.

Right now though, I would like to mention two secular songs that are really beautiful and fun! They are two of my all time faaavorites that I play on my radio show. Would you be using original soundtracks, or your own vocal or instrumental version?

I have included links here. They work on my computer. Hope they will work for you. They may need to be copied and pasted into your browser.

Don't know if I should put my phone number in this response, so if you would like to e-mail me, we could connect up further.

K.,
I've got 20 years on you and my mom just turned 80, so I looked at a Tony Bennett CD that she borrowed from the library and wants me to copy, Here's to the Ladies. It has some great stuff on it: People, Sentimental Journey (probably from the 40s or 50s), Tenderly (another old one) and Somewhere over the Rainbow. Also, I have the CD the Best of James Taylor and that has 60s songs on it: Something in the Way She Moves (the old Beatles song), Your Smiling Face, Shower the People (you love with love. Anything by Tony Bennett is good. Also the old Burt Bacharach tune Close to You made famous by the Carpenters would be interesting. Anyway, just a couple of thoughts. What a really nice idea to do for her!

BTW, because I'm a writer and teach women's writing classes, the first thing I think of is "put it in writing!" I suggest that to go along with your video, you write something for her. You mentioned all the great advice you got from her--tell her that in a letter! D.

Some great old standards would be wonderful! Look for anything and everything from Billie Holiday, Rosemary Clooney, Etta James, Lena Horne. Other standard artists, too. Some of my favorites songs from the '40's are "I Cover the Waterfront", "At Last", "You Made Me Love You", "It Had to be You", "Our Love is Here to Stay"
Good luck and hope that helps!

I am a singer and sang Leanne Womacks song "I hope you dance", for my grandmothers 80th Birthday. She loved it. Their generation also seems to love anything by Celine Dion. Oh and the Beaches soundtrack comes to mind, Bette Midler sings most of the songs on it. They are very emotionally moving songs.

Good Luck

How 'bout that song performed by Kenny Rogers, "Through the Years"? We had it in a slideshow presentation for my dad's retirement party.
