Son Lost iPhone, Help.

When I upgraded to an I-5 I gave my son my 4 to use as a iPod. We ate at a restaurant today and he realized he left it on the chair beside him. I am concerned because my email address is the Apple id on it and so whoever picked up the phone would have access to my email IF they can figure out his passcode.

What do I do? I am not all that tech savvy. I contacted Apple and they said if the iCloud locator was on I could shut the phone down. I wondered if I needed to change the Apple ID but my husband's phone is connected to it as well. When I updated my phone I created my own Apple id because I didn't want all that on my phone.

If anyone has any advice I would appreciate the help. I am over 150 miles away from the closest Apple store or I would just go in. The answers I'm getting at AT&T are sorry it happened there's nothing I can do to help you. ;(

Thanks!
L.

Sorry I forgot to include that within 30 mins of realizing he didn't have it we went back to the restaurant and I checked where we were sitting and spoke to the manager. Gave the manager all the identifying info and my number in case it showed up. I did not have the find my phone app on his but have since put it on mine. I thought at the time I bought the phone it was set up on iCloud to find my phone.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your help. The phone was returned to us and I am going to work on setting up his own Apple ID to separate from our email address and notes. I appreciate all who took time to help. :)

Well you can deactivate the phone so no one can use it.

When you called Apple - did you ask them how much it would cost to have them help you or do it for you?? If you have an iPad - there is a function there to find a phone - I remember seeing it on the news - a girl was in a car accident and the sheriff found her via her cell phone....

I would deactivate the phone via AT&T - listing it as lost or stolen - that should make it unable to work. If the person who picked it up tries to activate it - there SHOULD be a warning or alert to anyone trying to activate it in a store....

good luck!

I don't remember putting a "Find My Phone" app on my phone or IPad, but I can find them through "Find My Phone" on Apple's website. I don't know the address. I just google "Find My IPhone." Type in the email address and password and wait for the website to do it's thing.

Did you call the place where you ate?
Do you have the Find My iPhone app set up with your Apple ID?
That will show you right where it is.

Otherwise, I think you can erase the phone from your apple account.

I thought your questions was, "what should my son's punishment be for losing my iPhone." lol Sorry I'm not good with technical issues. Good luck.

if you're willing to pay the apple tech fee, they'll talk you through it. but the website can probably walk you through.
i'm not sure why your husband's phone being attached means you can't just change your password. you can just tell him the new one, right?

As others have said, the find my phone app is a great tool that is installed by default--and you have to be quite determined to uninstall/disable it due to few confirmation notices included in its settings.

Additionally, if you do end up having to remotely wipe your phone of its data--there are a few options in restoring it back. If you've ever plugged your iPhone into a computer with iTunes installed, and had it recognize the device, it *should* have ran an automatic backup which is kept on iTunes.

Also, while I'm not sure if it's enabled by default--iCloud also has an automatic backup function that is set to run whenever you're plugged in and connected via wifi.
