Mac/itunes Question... Probably Really Simple...

It's been a long day. I lost my job; my work computer was seized. I am going to be transferring my personal information to my new computer over the weekend before the other computer gets sent to CA.

In the meantime, how do I download iTunes? I can't remember my apple ID :( BUT, if I do remember, will it automatically pull up the songs I've already purchased? Do I go to iTunes.com or the app store to install it? If I plug in my iPod will it remember my information from the iPod?

What can I do next?

To download iTunes, just go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/ and download it. No ID required to download the program.

You can find your Apple ID on your Apple device (you mention an iPod) by going into Settings and then to the Store area under Settings. There you'll find your apple ID.

Failing that, check all your email addresses for an email from Apple looking for any purchase receipts, confirmation emails, newsletters, etc. That will give you your Apple ID, since it's an email address. Failing that, there's a recovery tool where you can get your ID and reset your password. Just have to remember the answers to your security questions.

Generally everything you've purchased will be tied to your account, meaning you can download/install apps to another device so long as you've got your ID and password, and it shouldn't mess with your iPod settings, and should use that for backup information.

EDIT - Jo mentions trying various emails until one sticks. Sometimes that's a good idea, if you've only got two or three of them. Apple will lock you out if you fail after five, and then you get to play the wait until the lock out timer ends game, or call in and prove to them that you're you. Same thing with an iPod. Five failed pass code attempts and the device locks for one minute. To many (haven't tested this, but I got up to a five minute lock out after nine failed attempts before finally remembering my security code), and you'll be locked out for upwards of three days.

I'm so sorry about your job. :( If you have your songs on your iPod, then you should be able to sync everything onto your new computer. That's what I did recently when my old computer's hard drive failed.

In order to download iTunes, just go to www.apple.com/itunes and there is a big blue button that says "Download iTunes." Click on that and you're in business.

As Jo says, your user name is just your e-mail so hopefully one of those will work. If you forget your password, they can email it to you.

Also, if it helps, you can e-mail yourself your contacts (from your Microsoft Outlook or whatever email program you used at your office) as a .csv file. Then you won't lose any of your business contacts - both Mac and PC computers can read that file. I know that wasn't part of your question, but that was something that worried me when I was laid off.

Hang in there... sorry again about your job.

It will download what you purchased through the iStore.

So yeah, download iTunes then put in your id and I think the instructions are there somewhere.

Troy bought some songs on his phone and when he opened iTunes at home they were there. :)

Oh the id is an email address so just start putting them in until you find the right one.
