Hello Everyone,
I need advice about my eight year old son. Last summer, he fell off a swing (20 feet high) at a local playground while he was with his grandparents. He hurt his neck and back area, but other wise seemed ok after a little while. Later on, he fell off a tire swing while visiting a relative. (The kids were rough housing and when told to stop, he accidentally flew off.) After this second fall, he began experiencing headaches, back pain, numbness and tingling from his head down his spine, into his arms, legs, and hands. I have brought him to the doctors who did MRI's and found two syrinx (fluid build up) in his back, one at c4 and one between t9 and t10 in his spinal cord. He has seen a pediatric neurosurgeon who has said that his problem is not related to the syrinx. We are scheduled to go to a neurologist on Dec. 19th, but that does not help my son who is in pain and having problems with his numbness and tingling every day. The doctor just put him back into physical therapy, but the physical therapist does not really want to touch him because he feels that it could damage his body more than what it is right now. I desperately need advice! My son's doctor is not convinced that he is that bad off, but I see it and so does the physical therapist who is working with him. (an example: the other night, we were making chocolate chip cookies. My son was looking down at the bowl and stirring when his arm went completely numb. His whole arm dropped and he couldn't hold onto the spoon to stir. He thought I did not see what happened so he quickly grabbed the spoon with the other hand and started stirring that way. When I asked him about it, he just said it went to sleep and that he couldn't use it. This is so NOT NORMAL for a child. I am beside myself trying to figure out what to do to help him. I am very concerned because he is started to not to do things just because he knows that certain things will cause him pain or to go numb. Does any one have any ideas at all????? I have tried to get his appointments moved up, but there are only two doctors in the state who handle this child predicament!! I would be very appreciative for any help what so ever.... Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who gave me so much great advice. I brought my son to several doctors, all of which disagreed on what to do! So, finally someone got the bright idea to have him tested for neurological damage. It was during this test that the doctors finally figured out what was wrong. Everything he did pointed to my son's right shoulder being 'damaged' some way. The doctor stopped the test in the middle of his exam and had my son do some basic motor skills test that required using his shoulders. Come to find out, my son has a rotator cuff injury to his right shoulder. The doctor explained to us how that most of the time with children, the pain that they experience is not the location of the injury. He should us how this could affect his other arm and cause his whole posture to be out of line. It was such a simple thing that everyone else missed it. My son does have a condition called syringomelia (fluid in the spinal cord) which he will have for the rest of his life from this injury (in two places). The doctors are recommending that after his shoulder blade gets fixed that he have chiropractic work and massage on his back to help with the fluid build up. You all were right in your advice in dealing with this. Thank you so much!

Stick to your guns and get as many opinions as you can. My daughter has had many specialists for issues involving allergies, orthopedic problems, GI issues and now neurological issues. Throughout our medical ventures there have been a couple of times when I had to second guess the doctors and as it turned out on those occasions, my concerns were justified. A good doctor will listen to your concerns and run any amount of tests to ensure the well being of their patient. I have had wonderful luck with Children's Boston as well as Mass General. I believe that any child's issue that begins to interfere with there daily lives not to mention one that is causing pain/discomfort is one that absolutely can't be overlooked. Keep your head up. It is not easy to watch your child go through any trauma and not have the answers to make them better. You'll find them. Best of luck.

yikes, that doesn't sound very good at all. I am a nurse and what you describe sounds all neurological in nature and you definately need a neurologist asap. I can see why the physical therapist wont work with him because he/she doesnt have a definitive diagnosis and they dont want to mess anything up. if you dont get any answers when you see the neuro dr in dec. definately get a second opinion.
good luck

I am not sure where you are living but if you live near West Hartford, I have an excellent suggestion for you. Take your son to a Chiropractor who is wonderful and experienced with children named Dr. Laub at West Hartford Chiropractic.###-###-####. You can see him SOON(I cannot beleive you are supposed to wait until December!!!!)and these are typical symptoms that people go to a chiropractor for. I am not a proffessional but rather a mom (whose kids are treated by him) but I do know that when kids fall their bones can be knocked out of alignment in such a way that they can affect the nerves passing through them thereby causing numbness and tingling. Definately call. If you are not able to get to WH call and ask for a good Chiropractor in your area!
Good Luck! S. L.

I think that you need a second opinion. A Syrinx can cause problems in the arms and especially the kind of symptoms that you are describing. I have placed a link here for you to go to for a brief description of a syrinx. You should do a lot more research on them as well. Your son's problems could, in fact be directly related to the Syrinx..especially the one at C4.

I am also a PT and agree with your current therapist on this. good luck!

Bring him to Children's Hospital in Boston. People come there from all over the country and world. My daughter has many issues going on and she has seen many specialists there. They have always done right by her. If you can't wait for an appointment, bring him to the emergency room at Children's Boston. It would be worth your piece of mind. You are his mom and if you have a gut feeling something is not right, just do what you have to. Better safe than sorry. Don't worry about "jumping the gun". Just go!!!!

Ohh C.!!! If its not one thing its another....but this is a BIG OTHER!!!!

Please keep us posted. I am sorry I have nothing to add except that I will keep you and your "baby" in my prayers.

I feel for you. How scary. WOW

Stay positive. Try to anyways. Your son sounds as if he is worried just like you. So if you stay cool around him then he won't try and hide things from you. Explain to him the seriousness around this but, try not to worry him....I know, easier said then done....I wish I had the magic words to help you.

Its best to keep up the communication....he must not hide anything from you....everything has a reason and all the symtoms(can't spell, sorry) but, they are very important!!

Bye for now.....I will say my prayers and you both will be in them....

Hi,

I'm new to the board and was just browsing. I agree with the others who are recommending that you take your son to Boston Children's. I took my son there for a specialist visit. I would search their website, find the pediatric neurological department and call. If the wait is more than a week or two, which is common for this hospital b/c of its reputation, I would consider taking him to their ER the next time he displays any symptoms. My biggest fear is that he could do damage that is not reversible.

I hope this helps and please keep us posted!

Just keep doing what you're doing, C.. You can ask the physical therapist to write a report and submit it to your son's pediatrician. This will help your pediatrician to understand that your son's pain, combined with continual problems with his performing normal activities, and that your son may need further specialist treatment. Has the physical therapist performed ultrasound in his therapy treatments? I know that when I was in an MVA back in '95, the chiropractor's office that was treating me (& my son, who was 6 at the time) used an ultrasound machine that sent ultrasound waves through our muscles to treat the pain & tingling associated with our injuries.
You can also put in a phone call to Children's Hospital in Boston - it doesn't hurt to ask questions to a hospital that sees all types of medical problems in children.
Good luck C. - our thoughts are with you - & please keep us posted.

I would highly recommend taking him to a chiropractor. Especially since he had fallen. They will take x-rays and explain everything to you before doing anything, and sometimes, that's the "simple" solution to what might have seemed like a huge event. My friend was recently in a car accident and several days later developed what he thought was an incredible migraine - so much so he spent the night in the hospital, the pain was so bad. His insurance footed over $10,000 of MRI scans, specialists consultations, morphine for his pain, and hospital bills. When he was running out of options and still in serious pain, he visited a chiroptactor - $65 and 20 mins later, he felt a world of difference. If you're uneasy about chiropractic, I'd recommend looking up the information for yourself - it's a genuine practice that specializes in spinal injury. Perhaps it's what your son needs. In any case, I hope you find the answer soon. -Best to you.

See if you can find a NUCCA certified chiropractor in your area. They don't crack the back, they just use the pinky finger of their hand to adjust a bone in the upper neck. My kids have done this, and it really helped them with early infancy issues. You can ask them for referrals of other patients etc. Good luck.
