17 Yr Old Daughter with Numbness and Shaking in Legs

My 17 yr old daughter has "numbness" (very little actual feeling but can feel pressure) and VERY shaky legs. She can barely walk on her own due to the instability from the shaking. She has had a full spinal and brain MRI which came back normal. There has been no fall, accident, or injury of any kind. She has seen a Neurologist who says everything is fine. We are going for a second opinion but was wondering if anyone could give me ideas or experiences similar to this! Thanks!

Just want to add that she has seen a Podiatrist, Neurologist, Chiropractor, 2 rounds of physical therapy, a 3 day stay in the hospital, and a Pain Management Specialist with no luck.

What can I do next?

Ditto the other posters about questioning Gardasil. Tests will come back negative and the docs will deny any connection.

edited answer: message me privately if interested in more info. There are facebook and yahoo groups devoted to just this issue.

Have her evaluated by a good chiropractor. We have seen lots of patients who md's can't find something wrong, and the DC fixes.

Is there any chance she had the Gardasil vaccine recently (or relatively recently)?

Good luck - truly hope you guys can figure it out soon.

Sounds like what a friend's daughter had at the same age -- guillain barre syndrome. Has that been discussed as a possibility? (Hers was unexplained, and went away after a few weeks.)

I was going to ask about Gardasil as well. If she has had a shot of it recently, please mention that to a doctor immediately! Or yes back to the chiropractor, maybe a new one if the old one couldn't figure it out, or back to that one if you didn't go long enough and trust them. Good luck!

I've had that and was actually dehydrated. Is she drinking enough fluids? Also, I had a thyroid condition. Have her thyroid checked. Autoimmune diseases can cause those type of symptoms. See an endriconologist. You have not mentioned any blood work. They need to check her thyroid hormones and sugar levels.

The numbness is a sign that something is going on neurologically. That can be anything from the nerves being constricted/pushed on, etc. as a result of improper skeletal structure/posture. If the neurologist said that everything is fine, then I would tend to say that it's a muscular imbalance (caused by poor alignment/posture) that is causing much of the problem.

I'm a certified posture alignment and pain management specialist who re-educates muscles to "do thier job". I've worked w/ quite a few neurological issues, INCLUDING quads and paraplegics and have gotten excellent results.....feeling returning, getting rid of the numbness, etc.

Might want to go online to the EGOSCUE website and check it out. You can actually e-mail a therapist, if you want, and ask ?s. If you are in the Fishers area, I'd be MORE THAN happy to take a look at her, give you referrrals, etc.

Let me know.

That is a terrible place to be for your daughter. I would like to share that I had a similar experience. The numbness continued and did cause falls, car wrecks, in-ability to work or hold my 3-year old. I was eventually diagnosed by a WONDERFUL neurologist via a spinal tap. I have a form of Peripheral neuropathy. I was treated and recovered % and wish the same for your daughter.

Hello, I am so sorry to hear that for someone so young. Actually, I am experiencing the samething. I have to walk with cane and a walker because i have falling a few times. I had surgery June of 2017 to have a large fibroid tumor removed while in hospital I couldn't feel my right leg. Still to this day my leg continues to go numb, shake, tightness of muscles , tingling, at first no pain now pain up and down my right leg. I'm going to physical therapy 2 twice a week and it seem like to visit the doctors monthly. Really, no good answers why. They just keep telling me to be patient my nerves will come back it has been a little over a year. An still doing the same. I don't know if I'm getting use to it or it's actually getting better. I want to think it's getting better. Prayers for her I understand her pain. 😢I hope they find out what is causing it . I have faith that this will go away.

I have a tremor that runs throught out my entire body. When I was 13 the tremor was just in my hands and it was bad enough that it caught my mom's attention and she started taking me to various specialists. Long Story short I've been going to Cleveland Clinic since then and seeing a neurologist there. What causes the tremors? Honestly they still don't know. but as I've gotten older the tremors have spread. Not like a seizure or anything-not that kind of shaking but you can see it. Typically it's just in my hands and feet/legs, but when I'm sick it's every where. And I also experience the numbness sensation. Not pleasant. I often describe it like having a charley horse. I can feel the pain in my leg or arm or wherever it might be. But if I was too touch my leg/arm whatever, I can't feel it.

Now I do have a rare metabolic disorder and all of that plays into it. How exactly? Again we're not completely sure but we know that it does.

But it was a few years of being tested and all of that before I was diagnosed. Hopefully she doesn't have what I have but still don't give up hope. I saw a neurologist in Columbus for a little while who thought I was making the whole thing up. It wasn't until I went to Cleveland Clinic that I started to get answers.

Good Luck

Have you checked with a nerve specialist and a Cardiologist? If she is fine while lying down, you may want a tilt table test performed. Has anyone everr checked for any autonomic nervouse system issues. There is a great doctor in Cleveland that specializes in that. His name is Thomas Chelimsky, http://casemed.case.edu/dept/neurology/Chelimsky.html. I go to him for POTS. He is very thorough and will not give up on you!

That sounds SO scary for your daughter and for you!
Keep up with the doctors/testing until they figure it out.
I have heard of problems walking due to reactions to medications or shots, so maybe look into that possibility, but it does seem to suggest some neurological problem because of the numbness.
