Ryan is a very loving boy who is social and likes atenttion like most children his age. However he has a seizure disorder ( which is under control right now) and Autism ( high functioning and at this age still gathering data) ....with possiable ADHD. He is taking Topamax for the seizures and colodine to sleep....however He STILL is very hyperactive we can not go anywere that requires he sit. We can not even get him to sit still, and trying to redirrect him is very hard because he does not speak yet through tempertantrums. I dunno if anyone out there can help but I am at my ropes end with medications and stuff....Ryan is supposed to start school Monday the 10th and even though his teacher ( who taught my eldest son last year is aware of Ryan Hyperactivity) said bring him anyways, they would work to help his needs. I still am very gun shy about taking him......Is there a medication that has worked for your child with this problem ? (Hyperactivity possiable ADHD) should I keep him at home right now? maybe wait a week? ...help

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok, so after reading all the responces and coaching myself more than him. I did it, took Ryan to school, and gues what? He did wonderfully it was actually easier to take him then our eldest boy. Ryan came into class, and ran straight for all the new toys. I watched him play with teacher aide for a little while, then said bye and left. The whole day had my phone glued to me sme where waiting for that ,"Your son had a seizure", or" He is too hyper", but it never came. The next day Ryan rode the bus, he did readily jump on the bus like brother, but did not cry either. That day nurse called and I got all worked up like oh no! lol she just needed a lable for his medications. So he is at school today and you know Ryan does not talk yet but already he seems happier? or a little diffrent already.

My son is 3 and is very hyperactive. I can not go anywhere w/ him w/o some kind of drama unfolding. He also has a severe speech delay which the speech therapy has helped so... much.

I do not have him on any medications, while they are still so.. little their bodies are growing. I have him on strict routine and EVERY BEHAVIOR that is NOT a positive one, the same consequence happens. Time outs used to be a joke, seeing he would never sit; however once he learned that if he could not sit, he would get one(very hard) swat, then have to sit back down. His time outs would not start until he was sitting up and quiet. Kids that age do not understand the concept of 3mintues or 5 more minutes, so I would say "we will be for a long time" "a very long, long time". They have begun to work, he is still very hyper and swats for very, very, unacceptable (like running in the road as he is very impulsive as well) behavior.

It took 4months of the same thing EVERY TIME. Very exhausting I must say.

but my friends do have their 3yr. olds on some medications. such as:
risperdall
adderall
ritalin

these seem to help their kids.

Best of luck to you. I know how exhausting it can be.

Send him to school. It will help him out so much. I now what you are going thru. My son is/was speech delayed and started school at 3. The PPCD program is designed to help the child with his/her own learning problem. Believe he will be fine and mybe he will even sit down for a while. I know it's hard but sometimes children will learn more to other people than thier own parents. Give it a try and see what happens in the first weeks. Believe it's better to start them young. The teacher will let you know if it's not working out. Also talk with his doctor.
Best of luck

Have you tried putting your son on a large ball to bounce on or perhaps a sling-swing to give him some proprioceptive or vestibular input before he is expected to have to sit still and/or focus for any given period? Often times this will be beneficial. Something else that may help with sitting still and focusing is a weighted vest. As far as trying to redirect or stifle the temper tantrum you may try something that will allow your son to be swaddled or try the weighted vest. If your son is or has been seeing a therapist he or she, or the teachers at his PPCD program should be able to help you obtain these items. If not, send me a message and I will see what I can do to help you procure them.
Good Luck and God Bless,
M.

I would recommend you try Focalin for the daytime issues. It is a very new drug on the market and works very well for ADHD. We have it coupled with trileptal for my son who also has a generalized seizure disorder and he's bipolar as well.

Hope this helps. It took us a long time to get to this point of trying everything.

PPCD teachers get training on how to help children with Speech Delays, ADHD and Autism. I know.. as I worked as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the schools...

I would suggest sending a "daily notebook" with your son to school so that the teachers can report how his day went.

Another suggestion is to make sure they set up a "picture schedule" for him to help him know what will happen during his day, having one at home would help you too...

I would also suggest looking into joining the Coastal Bend Autism Advocacy group to get suggestions/help from other parents with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Speech/Language Delays.

Feel free to email me at ____@____.com if you would like more information.

Thanks,

I would highly recommend, try gluten and casein free diet. Also find a DAN doctor, someone told me about a homeopath at Blanco. If you google DAN doctors, you'll find a list. My daughter is considered recovered, and the diet was very important, it seems hard, but there are many good options, try first dairy, then go the whole casein, you may see results in a week, for the gluten it takes a little bit longer, if you have questions you can e mail me ____@____.com

I am going to say much of the same as the previous responses, but put your son in PPCD. My son enrolled when he was 3 for speech delay and it was one of the best things I could have done for him.

I would question the Autism diagnosis. Autistic kids are NOT social. They are not able to socialize in general and do not want attention, even high-functioning. I say this because I had 2 doctor's suggest Asperger's to me for my son and when we went to the neurologist he diagnosed OCD and ADHD simply because he is social. My son has sooooo many of the symptoms on the Asperger's scale, however because he is social he does not meet the criteria. I would defiently tell your neurologist that he is social so your son gets a proper diagnosis.

As far as medicine. Fish Oil for children works wonders for my son who is very much like your son. Type "fish oil" in Google and you can read all kinds of info on it. It is completely holistic and does not have side effects. I call it the wonder drug, it does so many beneficial things for so many different ailments. As far as I know you can only find fish oil for kids at a health food store, but it is well worth the trip and cost. I recommend it to everyone I know because I believe in it so strongly.

Good luck and keep us updated!

Hi, I have a 10 year old son. Who has ADHD, OCD, High Functioning Autism, and a sleeping disorder. He can speak however the doctors told me that had I not pushed him so much he would have never learned how to speak at all. They don't like to label them Autism so early if they are high functioning it does take time and the right doctor. Every child is different and medication can at times be good and at times be bad. It is finding the right one that works best for him. Sometimes it has to change because of the children not responding to the medication any longer but later you can try it again. Some may work, Some may not, some may cause things to get worst, and some may just not see any difference. Most Autism children do well by self or in small groups but not so much in large groups or with loud music, etc.. This can make things a challenge however you will soon find your self researching everything you can to help and to fight for your childs rights. Make sure you stay involve and keep track of information it will help you with doctors, teachers, IEP meetings, etc....

TAKE HIM TO SCHOOL!!!!
The teachers at PPCD are trained to work with kids like him. He is going to be in good hands and it will give you a break. He really needs this and so do you. They will teach him wonderful things and he will do good. I have a nephew that is Autistic... they say he is high functioning and he LOVES his school. My son also had speech delays and was in PPCD for over a year (then we moved to waco and he was taken out of PPCD and put in regular Pre-K) HE LOVED IT!!! If nothing else I'm willing to bet if you ask they'll let you stay to watch him and see he is going to be ok. Hope all goes well, T.
