Try hydrocortizone cream for a few days. This should help out. Also, if possible let him run around without a diaper for a bit during the day. You could try gating him in the kitchen so if he makes a mess it will be easy to clean up.
My 14 month-old son seems to wake up all the time with poopie diapers and it has caused him to get a sever diaper rash. It's terribly red and now it's bumpy. I'm using Balmex and cornstarch right now but have also tried A & D ointment but it's just not getting better because he keeps waking up in poopie diapers. I let him sit in a bath of epsom salt last night but it's still blood red today. Should I keep doing all this or just take him to the doctor? I literally have to hold him down to change his diaper. I know he's in a lot of pain and I feel like the worst mom ever! Please help!
Thanks so much for responding to my question. The dr. called in some steroid ointment for him. They said it would work really fast. I didn't get it until almost bedtime last night but after one use there's no change. I'll give it the weekend and if it's still no better I'll call the dr. and make an appt. like you suggest and I'll definately ask about the enzyme. My son is a little pooping machine! Thanks for the info!

An old country home remedy worked for all 3 of mine. Brown some flour in a skillet until it is dark brown, almost burnt. Just put the flour in the skillet and stir constantly. Apply generously every diaper change. You will see drastic improvements within 24 hours!
Take him to the doctor. Diaper rash can get infected pretty easily. Two of my children were particularly susceptible and my pediatrician had me buy Boudreaux's Butt Paste and then he gave me a prescription of a powdered enzyme. Then I mixed the two in a resealable container and applied it at every diaper change. The enzyme (which is usually taken orally an used as a digestive aid for children who don't naturally make it) apparently helps to break down the stuff in the poop that is so damaging to their tender skin. That gives the cream time to heal the rash. It worked great for us every time!
Good luck!
