My daughter is almost 20 months old. She's had the upper respritory cough and congestion for a little while and is cutting her canine teeth, so when she developed this nasty diaper rash 2 1/2 weeks ago, I wasn't too concerned, and it started to go away last week, then as it was almost nearly all gone, it came back with a vengence. I've tried letting it air dry, wiping her butt with a warm washcloth, coating her butt, with either A&D, Desitin, Butt Paste, and numerous other products. I don't know what else to do, the poor kid won't even sit down in the tub for her bath, which she normally loves. She HATES when I lay her down to change her diaper and REALLY hates when I touch her butt to wipe or apply the cream. I feel so bad and she screams and cries when it's time to change her diaper. I just don't know what else to do to make her feel better and clear up the diaper rash. Please, help me!
We finally got into see the doctor. He prescribed some nystatin cream, and it finally cleared up, then came back and cleared up again. It looks like we finally got it under control and now she is a pleasant happy little girl. Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions!

Hang in there Beth! Recently my son had a really bad diaper rash and A&D ointment was not working. The thing that helped the most was using a protecting powder called Caldesene. I know powders can irritate the respiratory system, but this one works so well that I use it anyways. I bought it at CVS Pharmacy for less than $6. Good luck!

I know that my best friend's son had somewhat of the same thing and ended up taking him to the doctor to find out that he needed antibiotics and then steroids to get it to go away. So that would be my first suggestion to take her to her pediatrician and have it looked at. Good Luck.

My oldest did that when she was a baby. I tried everything. I used the stuff they use on cow udders. Her paternal great grandmother gave me some and cleared it right up. I think it's called udder balm or something.

This happens to my daughter everytime she goes on to antibiotics and we have to have another to get rid of the diaper rash. Try a few suggestions the other moms gave and if it doesn't go away in the next few days take her back to the dr..she may have a yeast infection

Make sure you see a doc at this point because it could be a bacterial or fungal infection. My son had both as he was fighting a sinus infection and even developed open sores on his bottom and testes. Yes, boys can get yeast infections! It took an anti-fungal cream and an anitbacterial cream, both perscribed from my doc and the rash went away quickly.

You need to take her to see a Dr. It may actually be a yeast infection. Even if it isn't, at least he'll be able to clear things up for you. Reassure you that it is only a diaper rash. Either way you'll feel better knowing for sure!

Ok my daughter had it so bad that even some of the pastes would sting. Then my doctor told me I could try to sit her in some warm water with baking soda in it. It drew the pain, redness and dried it up almost over night! Then also I ordered some stuff called Dyprotex. It comes in individual lil tubs with a sponge applicator. It didn't sting and it is the best stuff when it is severe. You use this little sponge applicator to dab it on. You dont use your hands to put it on because this stuff does not come off easy. It won't let anything get to that healing bum. My doctor gave me some perscription ointment, and it didn't help it much at all.

Bag Balm works very well for our boys. Our 3 yr old boys have very sensitive skin, so they get diaper rashes very easily. Bag balm seems to work better than anything else we have tried. You can ask the pharmicist where it is located, and more about it at your local pharmacy.
Hope this helps.
Hugs,
G.

My nephew gets diaper rash all the time. You can go to a pharmacy or pharmacy section in any store and ask for "Bag Balm". It's usually in a square green tin. That's the only thing we've found that clears it up without a prescription.

I absolutely swear by Bag Balm. You can buy it at Walgreens in the lotion section it comes in a green square tin can. It not only lasts forever but within two diaper changes you will be able to tell a difference. I have an in-home daycare and always use it on the babies if they have any kind of redness at all and by the next diaper change it is gone. I also use it as preventative as I have used it every night for both of my girls when they were infants.

I would suggest that you keep using the warm washcloth instead of wipes....if A&D or vaseline isnt working and neither are any of the diaper rash creams use a little mylanta. Mylanta is commonly used for stomach indigestion and acid reflux but because it is used to coat your esophagus and stomach lining from acids, it works very well against nasty cases of diaper rash. I worked for a doctor who used to suggest that when all else fails...it usually helps within 24 hours to eliminate the pinkness and soreness and should clear the whole thing up within 2-3 days! Good luck and I hope this helps!
I saw that you got something that works...use the above advice if it happens again and you want to try it!

We just went through this with our 18 month old son. Nothing seemed to work and it went on for like 2 weeks. It got so bad his skin was bleeding so we used neosporin on the really bad spots, desitin or whatever cream on the rest and Nystatin powder. We also had tried the Lotrimin mixed with hydrocortosone that normally kicks his butt rashes. That still didn't seem to work well. So I went to the pharmacy AGAIN and the pharmacist recommended slathering him with all that I was using and then using cornstarch powder too. I also changed diapers from luvs to huggies and the rash was gone in about two days. It's not talc powder but the cornstarch and it solved!! Good luck I know what you are going through. My little guy would try and run at diaper changing time!!

If it is a yeast infection, my doc. told me to use Lotrimin AF you get it in the athletes foot section. It worked for my babe. If it is just diaper rash- I swear by Flanders. I have only found it at Walmart. If you can't find it in the baby aisle ask the pharmacist. It cleared up almost overnight with it. Good Luck!!

My son had a diaper rash and it wouldn’t go away, He was on antibiotics and it turned into a yeast infection I tried Lotramin AF and it helped but it didn’t totally go away. I got the following recipe from my sister and it was gone in two days.
My sister got the recipe from her doctor when her youngest had a diaper rash, she swears by it and it worked great for me for both a regular Rash and yeast infection.
1 large tube of A&D the clear kind not creamy
1 large tube of Desatin Creamy
1 1oz tube of Neosporin or the like (I get the kind with pain relief included)
1 or 2 tsps of Maalox liquid form (maybe more)
Mix it up and apply liberally to the rash. Be careful adding the Maalox as it makes it very goopy. It is nice however because it applies easily this way. My son was screaming too, until I used this cream, I think it felt good to him.
Best of luck

If every Mom whose child had a diaper rash was failing we would all be in trouble. My daughter got really bad rashes when she had too much milk and I found that the only thing that would work is to give her a really warm bath with about two tablespoons of baking soda and then use balmex on her bottom and sprinkle with baby powder. I also made sure that I kept a batch of sensitive skin baby wipes just for those nasty instances. (I know they are a little more spendy, but I only use them when her butt is sore.) It seemed to me that once I started to really monitor the amount of dairy it got really better. Hope it helps!

My oldest daughter had that. She was so bad she was blistered. I took her to the doctor for it because didn't know what else to do. The doctor said he could perscribe me something but he new something that worked better. He told me to use the liquid maalox! I looked at him as if he was crazy, but he said think it coats your stomach. It puts a protective barrier on it. I tried it,i poured some on the rash. She didn't cry because it was cool on her.I put it on at every diaper change. Within 2 days it was gone. From then on i never used anything else for diaper rashes!! I hope it helps!

I would try BAG BALM if you havent already. You really need to pile it on and make sure you keep her butt dry at all times and put more on at each diaper change.

Hey Beth, This is from my grandmother and mother and it actually works. I used it on my kids when they where babies. Take some flour and brown it in a skillet, don't burn it but brown it. Rub (gently) it on the rash and this should help relieve the discomfort and within a few days the rash should clear up. Put they rest in a container or a ziploc bag and use for later. I hope this helps. There is nothing like watching a child being uncomfortable.

Hi B.,
My daughter used to get, as you so eloquently put it "the butt" when she was a wee babe. It turned out to be a combination of regular old diaper rash and a yeast infection. YUCK! Poor baby! The doc prescribed a anti-yeast cream paired with a very thick prescription butt paste. Then about every other application, we put a thin layer of neosporin to help clear up the really ouchy parts. This took a long time to clear up, but it was the only thing that worked. Good luck, I know how ouchy this can be for baby and supermommy alike.
Take care,
J.

My son had a horrible diaper rash last winter and we were away visiting family. He was in so much pain and I tried every diaper rash cream I could find. Finally I asked my step-mom who is a nurse what I should use, she told me to go to the drug store and find a diaper rash cream with the highest percentage of Zinc which is the active ingredient in diaper rash cream. I found some cream made by aloft that was 40% zinc compared to the 14% in others that I tried. I applied it super thick and it was just a little pink when he woke up the next morning and gone by the end of the day! We have also had a problem with him getting yeast infections in which case the diaper rash cream will make it worse and my ped. has me use Monistat 7 on him like diaper rash cream twice a day. Anyway sorry this is long....hope it helps!

USE BURNT FLOUR!!!!!!!!!! I'm joking...seriously try burnt flour..put flour in a skillet and cook it until it turns a light brownish/tan. Let it cool and then sprinkle it on her bottom. It will help with the pain and in a day or so the rash will be completely gone. Its a home remedy that my mother in law taught me and thank God for it. I gave up all the over the counter creams for flour. Its cheaper and works like a charm. Good luck!!!
