Well, my son broke his arm on Friday evening. We swim a lot during the summer, and I am anxious that this is out for the next month. Can anyone recommend tips on caring for him and his cast during this time? He hates that I have to help him bathe, etc. What about alternate activities in the Denver area? Tell me about a cool places for an almost 6th grade/12 yo to visit- free or low priced tips would be great. Maybe his injury will give us a chance to explore some things and places we normally wouldn't! Thank you!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the responses so far! It was great to wake up this morning and read your ideas and advice! Jan, Amen on the 12 yo not wanting mom to see him naked! I am going to look into a waterproof cast- Thursday he is meeting his uncle in San Diego for a trip to Legoland and they were going to go to the beach and a waterpark! If I can't get a waterproof cast, I found this link to a local Denver area company that offers pick-up of their waterproof cast cover products! http://www.castcoversnow.com/index.html Thank you again for your kind words!

I would look up city parks and recreations and see if theres any museums or book clubs that may interest your child. My brother is going on 14 and he enjoys the whole boy scout thing. I don't know if he hurt his dominant hand but there are cooking clubs and art clubs provided by the city. They are usually reasonable. You could make a day out of the zoo, they have free days 5 times a year but I would get there a few minutes before open its a mad house. If he has any friends and you live in a house pitch a tent in the back yard and let them have a sleep over with a few board games.Thats all I can think of and I hope this helps.

If he's into sports you can always take a tour of Invesco field. It's also coming around to the time of Broncos training camp. It's free and my kids have a blast watching them train.

You can check out this website for free movies during the summer. He may be too old for them, but I thought I would throw it out there. We've seen most of the movies they are showing, but it's still fun to go and get some popcorn and relax in the air condtioning.

There's also this website for the free movie program. They have different movies depending on which theater you go to.

My daughter broke her arm last year while on her dirt bike, but still managed to run around and have fun. I'm sure he'll manage just fine once he is used to having the cast on. You'll probably have to remind him to calm down from time to time!!

Ask your Dr about Waterproof casts. They have them now!! We were at a pool and little girl was playing in the water and everything - after talking to her Mom, she said it's a waterproof cast that her Dr put on so they couls still have water-fun in the summer!

Good luck!

Does he like to read? you could get him in the summer reading program at the library. He can still hike and do other outdoor activities. My daughter was in a leg cast one summer and played in the sprinkler and played like everyone else.

Good Luck,

My son broke is arm twice (ages 8 and 12) His doctor let him continue almost all his activies, (except no football, no push-ups or anything that puts a lot of force on the arm) but he was even able to participate in karate.

I think you can let him do most of his regular activies but do not let the cast get wet!!! if it does it will become a bacteria farm and the smell will be like nothing you've ever
experienced! :) If it does get wet on the inside try using a blow drier set on low to help dry it out.

As for bathing. I used the long bags the newpaper comes in or some other waterproof bag, stuck his arm in that then used waterproof medical tape (the kind in the first-aid section of Walgreens) sealed up the cast and let him take showers or baths. ...no 12 yr. old boy wants his mom to see him naked! :) Again he still needs to keep it as dry as possible.

And again as long as he's not banging his cast against anything or putting presure on his arm he can still do a lot of his regular activities.

I hope you still have a good summer!

My son broke his the day before we were to go to a waterpark with his cousins visiting from out of state. The good news is that they make a watertight cast covers that work great for swimming as well as the shower. Check out this website http://www.waterproof-cast-cover.com This way you don't have to miss out on water fun! good luck.

Hi E.,

Here is some advice from a fellow Buckeye who loves CO. Ask for a gortex cast (the lining is gortex and is thinner than the regular casting material). It only costs a little more. My son was able to shower and swim with it on (he thought that was really cool). He broke his hand. We also put a spot magnet in the cast to promote healing and decrease the swelling bruising and pain. I can give you more info on it as well.

Of course there are plenty of non-swimming activities he can enjoy as well - aquarium, museums, hiking, train rides, etc. My son really seemed to enjoy the attention he got with the cast, so it never slowed him down.

Take care,
S.

Head to the mountains. There are camping areas that are free and some require a low fee (18.00 at the most). If camping is not your thing just go for the day. My son's (11 and 13) love looking for wildlife. I love getting out of the city. Don't forget the museums, auqarium and library (events vary by location). A trash bag works great in the shower. I know he might not like it but maybe taking a bath might be easier. If it makes you feel better my girl broke her arm at 18 MONTHS. We got through it but it seemed like it took forever. You never know how much water they are around (especially in the summer) until they can't get wet. =( I hope your little man feels better soon and you all have a great rest of the summer.
