Hello Mom,

My son since a baby has always got a lot of boogers in his nose. He is 4 years old now and it seems a little worse as of recently. Every day he has new hard boogers stuck in his nose which makes it difficult to breath properly. He has very small nostrils so what I do is get a flashlight and tweezers and pull them out EVERY day so he can breath right. Its very irritating for the both of us and I can't understand why he gets them so often. Im assuming its allergies maybe?? Any advice on the matter would be appreciated. Im wondering if his nose may be too dry, maybe he needs a nose spray or allergy medicine?

Thanks,
M.

What can I do next?

Have you tried using a saline spray? This might loosen the "boogers" so he can blow them out on his own. If he is building that much mucus, maybe you can use process of elimination to find what he is allergic to. Have you always used the same laundry detergent? Switch to one that has no scents. Might it be a food he has always eaten? Rotate some of the more obvious ones out of his diet. If it seems worse recently, has he been exposed to anything new in his environment, like carpet or cleaning products?

i think the nasal saline rinse is a great idea. Get the squeeze bottle kind and let him do it in the bathtub.

I think many many people have allergies and don't realize it. so if you have time and money you might want to explore that. if not stick withthe rinse.

My friend's daughter constantly had boogers/snot (Every day of the year) and no other symptoms. It turned out she was allergic to corn and wheat. They changed her diet and it went away. Then she outgrew it (hoorah!) when she was about 6 or so.

Does he have excema by any chance? The combination of the two is what made me realize my son had a milk intolerance. Of course, this was when he was an infant, but it's possible your son does have one. Even a mild intolerance can create excess mucus and such.

Nasal saline can't hurt, so I'd try that too. It might feel a little funny at first, but he'll get used to it! Just use the regular saline not nasal spray.

Have you discussed this with his pediatrician? Maybe he needs to be seen by an ear-nose-throat specialist? I don't have any experience with this but I would wonder if there is an underlying cause for why he seems to be producing excessive amounts of mucous. I would make an appointment with his doctor and then go from there.

try a teaspoon of benadryl 3 times a day ( morning noon and bed), also do nasal rinses oh him. those take time to get used to but my 4 year old daughter does them :).

TWEEZERS? He lets you do that? LOL

What about a cool mist humidifier in his room at night? That always help the booger factor with my son.

Is he eating dairy? A dairy allergy can cause this. I had my children's food allergies cleared through acupuncture. HTH

My son was the same way and I never wanted to take him to a specialist because I was afraid they would give us some daily medicine.. well fast foward till he was 5.. I took him did the whole allergy test and he came back allergic to grass.. and they put him on a daily medicine + tried some nose sprays... so I only give him the daily medicine when he plays sports.
Depends on how you feel about daily medicine.. but I would have an allergy test done just to know.

I suggest his nose is too dry. Allergies may be what is causing the buggers but it's the dryness that makes them hard. I use a personal lubricant in my nose to keep it more moist. I also use vaseline. Either one of those will soften the buggers making them easier to remove.

Little Noses brand has some nasal sprays that might help.
