Everyone around here is going crazy for morel mushrooms. They have just started popping up. People are hunting them down in a frenzy and are very territorial over their mushroom hunting grounds. Do people go this crazy over mushrooms where you live?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

In all the places that I have lived I have never known people to go this mad about mushrooms but I thought maybe I just wasn't paying attention and that the mushroom crazies are everywhere, not just in the Midwest. This could become a mushroom forum. But at least I don't think anyone will politicize mushrooms and therefore no one will be offending others with differing opinions! They do taste pretty good but nothing I would go wild about.

No! You don't need a gun to pick mushrooms but people take guns with them to scare off people who are interloping on their mushroom hunting grounds. People seriously go CRAZY over these mushrooms.

Just for the record. I think talking politics and mushrooms are both fine subjects (I don't really think much should be off limits) for mamapedia.

Abby we were up in Pontiac for Easter and Troy's brother came in the kitchen proudly sporting a huge bag of Morels. I didn't know you could find them around here either. Well I am from Missouri, still if you guys have them then we must have them as well. That river can't stop everything! :p

I am really hurt to see this non bin Laden post after I went through the effort to learn how to spell his name and all. :(

Is this going to turn into a mushroom forum?! Sorry couldn't resist. :)

I haven't heard of anyone hunting morels here in IL (maybe they do, don't know if they even grow here), but I'm originally from KY and people do go pretty crazy there for morels in some parts of the state. Supposedly morels are prized in fine cooking, especially in French cooking. But from what I know it's more about the fun of the hunt. Personally I don't get it, but I guess by this time of year people are willing to get out of their houses and do just about anything!

The general population...no. But it's the most dangerous time to hike in this area because the professional mushroom hunters bring guns and are more than a little wacky. I've learned not to take my son hunting during mushroom seasons because we've had a couple close calls. SERIOUSLY, the pot farmers are less aggressive than the mushroom guys. Which is saying something.

Morels are pretty amazing... it's an annual thing in a lot of the midwest to go morel hunting. And yeah, people are very territorial about their favorite hunting grounds. Mushroom hunting isn't popular here in New Mexico because I don't think any edible mushrooms grow here, but when we lived in Wisconsin for a few years I remember morel season being huge.

Mushroom hunting...that's real?!? Sounds kind of awesome. I LOVE mushrooms! The laser tag, paint-balling, super competitive side of me...is very intrigued.
I just added one more thing on my "to do before I die list." Thanks, for the inspiration!!

100 years ago, our grandparents could recognize wild foods and eat them happily. We should be so smart to revive some of those pioneer skills, esp. since good food costs so darn much!

Morels are a delicacy! At least $20/pound. So if you find them, you can make some money. Problem is, no one know where exactly they'll spring up. Morels tend to pop up after spring rains.

P.S. How the heck can one politicize a mushroom? Am I just dense?
Food and CRAZY are definitely Mamapedia topics, though!

I lived in the SF area where a family of experienced mushroom pickers picked and ate the wrong kind, though similar looking. They died of liver failure. I prefer the mushrooms in the supermarket!!
