Solutions for Night Teething?

My 2 month old baby is already teething. (We know because you can see/feel his teeth and he's gnawing on everything, and the pediatrician said some babies -- like mine-- do teethe early and there's nothing wrong with him, he's just an early teether) He's fine during the day with a teether and hands, and when he goes down at night we can give him a dose of baby tylenol or motrin, but for his late afternoon nap and his mid-nightime feeding, we can't just keep drugging him. Does anybody have any solutions? He won't take a pacifier, and the teether won't stay in his mouth and he's not able to even grip and lift it yet and not hit himself in the head. We did try rubbing alcohol on his gums to numb them and that helped a little bit but not enough to make him sleep. Any advice would be welcome.

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice; we'll try the homeopathic teething tablets. I should have mentioned in the post that my son is growing MUCH faster than most kids-- he's 15lbs, has a full head of hair, is in the 95% percentile for height and weight, and is DEFINITELY teething, it really is the correct diagnosis for his problem-- the pediatrician saw him and told us that's what it is-- besides it's very obvious because you can feel his teeth, his gums are swollen, and he's gnawing on everything. And we were giving tylenol and motrin because our pediatrician and pediatric nurse TOLD us to use them. The rubbing alcohol is a more natural, old-fashioned solution that has been used for generations so we tried it, but it wasn't great. Peach Schnapps the baby loooved so he just licked his gums before the alcohol could numb them, and cognac he loathed but it did numb the gums... for about 10 minutes after which he'd wake up crying and gnawing again. So hopefully tablets will do something.

I agree with the other post that 2 months is awfully young to be teething. I advise calling your doctor before giving Motrin, I think they need to be older than 2 months-more like 6 months is what my ped. always recommended with my kiddos. And rubbing alcohol? Never heard of doing that but sounds like a bad idea!

Once you find out for sure that Oliver is, in fact, teething- the teething tablets are AMAZING!!

Why do you think it's teething that's causing issues at night? Also, you should ask your doctor about using tylenol and motrin, those drugs aren't super easy on the liver and kidneys.

There was a recall on Baby Oral gel a several months ago this year, so am not sure how effective it is. You can go to Walgreen's and by Hyland's teething tablets, a homeopathic, easy on the liver and kidneys and works like a charm. yes, motrin and tylenol is very hard on their little livers and kidneys.

I thought my baby was teething at 2m as well, I found out she was just overtired and overstimulated and had to get her to sleep earlier. She didn't get a tooth until almost 1yrs old. Something else to think about and consider. The Book Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Baby by Dr. Weisbluth was helpful as well as Secrets of the Baby Whisperer, where you learn to understand their cries and what they truly mean.

Good Luck,
J.

There is a night-time teething gel made by Baby Orajel I think. There are also natural teething tablets made by Hyland's. They worked well for our son. Hope this helps!

Hyland's Teething tablets, dissolve in some water, formula or breastmilk for the nap and maybe have some ready for the night feed. My Girl starting teething around three months... I feel your pain!

i think someone else mentioned this, but you're not supposed to give infants motrin until they're 6 mos old. check with your doctor.
from what i've heard, the teething pain sort of comes and goes, so if your child still is waking and crying after two weeks or so, i'd wonder if it might be something else, like him fighting his sleep. it's also supposed to be easier after the first tooth comes in. good luck.

OMG - DON'T PUT RUBBING ALCOHOL ANYWHERE IN A BABY'S MOUTH!!! It could poisonous!!! You are right about NOT to keep giving him tylenol & motrin all the time either. He could be teeting for several months; he may just be a fussy sleeper.

The Hylands homeopathic teething tablets worked wonders for us. They dissolve instantly, so you don't need to worry about him choking (I was worried when I started using them). They sell them at Walgreens in the baby's section. I used them probably until my daughter turned 2, they worked great!
