So Completely Frustrated with My Periods

Hubby and I have been trying to get pregnant for a little over 5 months now. It seems like an impossible task to me at this point in time. Before we started trying I was on the depo shot for a year, and then the patch for about 6 months. We waited a month after coming off of the patch to start "trying". While on the depo and on the patch I had a regular 28 day cycle the whole time. After coming off the patch my cycle has just been a crazy mess of irregularity! 27 days, 35 days, 28 days, skip a period altogether, etc... It's very frustrating. I am now 6 days late going by a 28 day cycle and have just gotten my 2nd negative pregnancy test.

I know, I know... "Don't stress about it, stress doesn't help" or "It will happen when you stop 'trying'"...

Okay, first of all I am really not "stressing over it". At the moment, I am frustrated with my period. Yes. About a week before my period is "supposed" to come I get a little excited, but I don't consider that stressing over it. I try harder to have sex at least every other day when I think that I'm ovulating, but I am certainly not running around with charts and basal body temps and propping my hips up after sex... Although, admittedly, if I could use a basal body thermometer (I have one but it says that you are supposed to do it FIRST thing when you wake up (It says on there that you can't do anything else - You can't even talk - before taking the temp)) I would be running around with a basal body temp chart and if it didn't hurt my back I would totally be propping my hips up afters sex... But my point is I"m not! :) I'm not stressing over it. It's not consuming my every thought and when I do think about it the thoughts aren't stressful they are just full of excitement. And if you consider that to be 'stressing over it' then I'm screwed because let's face it... There's not a switch that you can just turn off to stop thinking about these things.

Second of all, in my opinion if you are having unprotected sex you are trying to get pregnant. So I can't really just 'stop trying'.

Ugh, this is mostly just a vent but I guess I do have a question.

Are there any "tricks" I can do to get my period to become regular again or do I just have to wait it out and have to have sex every day every month until I get my positive (Which, now that I'm thinking about it, really wouldn't be that bad :P )?

What can I do next?

what did you do when you got pregnant with your first one? why not try that again?

no tricks to make your cycle regular. You need to talk to your OB/GYN and find out if your hormones are changing.

You obviously don't get what people when they say to "STOP TRYING" - they mean STOP thinking about it. Stop being consumed with it. Stop having sex to get pregnant. Have sex for fun. THAT's what people mean when they say "STOP TRYING".

My period disappears when I am not on the pill. Kind of hard to have a baby when you aren't ovulating. I understand your frustration.

My first thought is five months isn't that long, even though it seems like a life time. My second thought is that I have heard from friends that their doctor told them it could take up to a year to get pregnant after being on depo.

So my suggestion would be to see your doctor. Is you period wonky simply because you need to give it more time after being on all the hormones, or is something amiss? In our case, by accident we discovered that my blood sugar runs higher than most (not diabetic, just on the high end). That higher blood sugar causes me not to ovulate. After 2.5 years trying, 2.5 weeks after being on medication to lower my blood sugar, we were pregnant. So get checked out. Make sure everything is fine. And in the mean time, enjoy the baby making practice!

I dont know if this helps any, but I have never been on birth control and my periods are often irregular.
You were probably regular due to birth control.
I have 3 kids. ONE of them we actually planned. :) He took 8 months to conceive, and we were TRYING.
When they say dont stress, they mean it.
My doctor has never been concerned with my irregular periods. It has actually gotten more regular with age, but I remember skipping a whole month or being 10 days late or 5 days early. Have fun with it and try to relax.
5 months is not a long time.
