Snoring like a Trucker

My 6-month old seems to have been super congested since NB and snores like a 50-year old man (no offense to the 50 year old men out there ... but the point is she snores like an adult ... loud)! She will snort herself awake often and I have yet to get her to sleep longer than a 3-hour stretch any given night. She is partial breastfed and partial formula fed. I am doubtful that it is a milk allergy as I did give up dairy for 3 months and there was no relief (plus no stool evidence of allergies). She has also had a cold for what seems to be about 2 months (granted she is now in day care and 'tis the season for sharing colds). I just wonder if anyone seems to have similar situations which had a different outcome other than 'ride it out' ... 'wait and see' .... I treat for the cold with humidifiers, baby vapo, aspirators, saline spray ... daily and constantly. Has anyone had a real 'medical' issue in which this is a symptom?

What can I do next?

She might have a fatty pallet that relaxes when she sleeps thus causing all the vibration. Also could be a deviated septum. Milk causes phlegm, would she take a dash of water before lying down, maybe to clean the milk out of her throat?
I'd have the doc look up her nasals and her throat, it's worrisome when you know they have restricted air flow, and snoring is just that and definitely a symptom that needs to be followed up.

If her snoring is interupting her sleep you MUST see a pediatric ENT sooner rather than later. Get a referral from your ped.

Hi J. and Yes.
After 3 years of waiting and trying different things...
it turns out our LO has sleep apnea cause by enlarged tonsils/adenoids...we tried to reduce their size by waiting and by cortisone drops etc, so as to avoid an operatin.

we are having the operation to shave the tonsils down (not completely remove)...

Now...this does not mean this is your path. It may be or not. Just monitor the breathing issue day and nite, not just during cold season. Monitor the size of tonsils at a later age....

I hope our issue is not yours, but i wanted you to have the information so you can monitor for it.

Good luck.

p.S. we also tried reducing milk, salt drops in nose, and so forth...

I would have her checked by an ent. Could be allergies or adenoids, tonsils... Have a Doctor look her over and give you advice. Not sleeping for more than 3 hours isn't healthy for her development (or your mental health). I'm sure it will improve, but I'd take her in for an eval. Best of luck : )

My daughter had frequent nasal congestion/upper respiratory infections and snored quite a bit as a baby. An x-ray from the ENT showed huge adenoids. She had them removed at about 18 months & her problems disappeared. It was a very quick outpatient surgical procedure at the hospital early in the morning & she was happily playing at home that afternoon. She's now 7 and just gets the occasional cold like every kid does & never snores. Good luck!

My son had sleep apnea. It took us until he was almost 2 to figure it out. I also found an ENT that would just look at a video I took because I did not want to put him through a "sleep study". When they are snoring soooo loudly that it disrupts their sleep I do not believe a sleep study is necessary.
We had his tonsils and adenoids removed. He is now 10 and has never had another problem.

Yes there is a new yet up and coming rare disorder called Primary Cillia Dyskensia. Kids are usually full in the sinus and need antibiotics for recurrent sinus isses that do not go away or in lungs but that or large adenoids and tonsils of course will cause this. Just video tape it and take to the pedatrician or better yet an ENT. You can always request a sleep study, they are not hard but just no real good night of sleep but they tend to show LOTS! and are helpful! good luck and listen to your insticts this is more than just a stuffy nose.

What does the Pediatrician say? I think its' time to visit an pediatric ENT for her. She shouldn't be snoring like that if there are no allergies or cold. :)
