My daughter snores.. BIG time. Should I be concerned? Is this a health issue or is she just very tired? She is not overweight nor sleeps with a humidifier or any other device.

What can I do next?

Have you Googled Sleep Apnea + child + snoring. There are some excellent articles on sleep apnea and snoring. Snoring is not necessarily a sign of apnea. However, sleep apnea has a profound effect on children and adults. -- B.

snoring is definitely a sypmptom of something aray. Dr. Arta Vakhshoori, DDS addresses this symptom, indeed is a specialist of such disorders. Her office is located in S. San Jose. I don't have her number handy but her email is ____@____.com Let her know that Dr. Claudia Wolfe referred you, so she knows how you got her names. It's at least worth a consult.

Good day S.,

You may want to consult your pediatrician, snoring can be a sign of Sleep Apnea, and yes it can be a serious health issue.

I have a seven year old boy who was diagnosed with sleep apnea. His pediatrician advised me to watch him while he slept, to watch for specific characteristics: ie. labored breathing, chest depressions, and short spurts of non-breathing, along with the snoring.

I hope this information helps.

My oldest son snores (he is 5), usually when he is very very tired or his allergies are acting up and he is a little stuffed up. If it is all the time I might get that checked out, or if you are really concerned you could call your ped and ask (never hurts!), but if it's only occasionally I wouldn't worry about it.

Does she have allergies? That could be it too!

This sounds like you might want to talk to a pediatric sleep disorder doctor. It is possible for children to have sleep apnia even at this young age. My husband has sleep apnia and I had to put up with his snoring for years before he went to get it checked out. Before he was diagnosed and put on a breathing machine he could fall asleep almost anywhere he sat for more than 15 minutes. Not sure how the effects of sleep loss would affect such a young child, however I would think that the child would always be grumpy. Hope this info helps.

You may check her adenoids. My daughter had a problem with them being too large. Children usually grow into them but if not it can cause some long term affects with the growth of the upper pallet in the mouth and other issues that we have had to deal with. My daughter snored and when I asked the pediatrician said "her lungs are clear". I didn't even know that there were adenoids to check. Later as the issues grew we found the problem.

Good luck,

My son snored a lot when he was 3 -4 and he was having some apnea and he threw up a lot (his tonsils were so big it restricted his airway). The ENT didn't think it was necessary to take his tonsils out. We decided to anyway along with adnoids. Afterward the ENT said he had never seen such big tonsils or adnoids. He doesn't snore, have apnea or throw up anymore. It was the best thing we could have done - even though the ENT didn't think we "had" to do it.

snoring isn't an issue unless at some point during sleep she stops breathing or something. If this is occuring she would need to be tested for sleep apnea.

Hi I would have her checked out. When my son was 5 he snored real bad when asleep and then he started making noises when awake, when I took him in he needed his adnoids taken out. He also had to have tubes in his ears and his tosils out all related with the snoring in some way. Good luck

My children have all had their tonsils removed. My youngest had hers removed right before she turned 5. Like your daughter, my youngest snored BIG TIME, ever since she was a toddler. She used to wake up crying no matter how much sleep she got. We finally got a referral from her pediatrician and took her to the Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. One peek and he immediately said they needed to be removed. As with the crying his explanation finally made it make sense....."how would you feel waking up everyday as if you didn't get a good nights rest?"

It never hurts to be safe and have you daughter checked out. If she has to remove her tonsils, it is an out patient procedure and recovery time is fairly quick at this age as well. Not to mention lots of ice cream and cuddle time with mom.
Good Luck!

My daughter used to snore also. I would talk to the dr. at her next appointment about it. Snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea, but it doesn't mean she has sleep apnea. To be better prepared for the dr. appointment, watch her sleep. Take note if she stops breathing and then gasps for air, or if the snoring is waking her.

My daughter's tonsils and adenoids were removed when she was 5, but not because she was snoring. She had been getting sick a lot. Now that she doesn't have tonsils or adenoids, I haven't heard her snore once.

Talk to the dr.

Good luck.

I would definitely talk to your pediatrician. Often times snoring is considered a form of sleep apnia and is caused by enlarged tonsils and/or adnoids. Sometimes it's not a concern if it isn't disturbing their sleep, but it could be blocked airways due to enlarged tonsils. My older son snores and has huge tonsils, but it doesn't disturb his sleep. My youngest son is scheduled to have his adnoids and tonsils out in a month because of sleep issues and constant sinusitis.

Hope this helps.

Make an appointment (or have her referred to an ear, nose and throat specialist)! Check to see if she should get her tonsils and/or adnoids out! Our son used to snore so loudly (we could hear him downstairs ) and he would wake up during the night (every 3 hours) until we had this surgery done. He was about 3 1/2 years old and the doctor said his adnoids were about the size of a baseball! He couldn't breath and that was what was causing the snoring. He now "sleeps like a baby".
Good Luck to you ~

Our middle child was like that, she would actually stop breathing, and she snored so loudly we could hear her thru
the entire house which is when we knew it was time to flip
her over. She also kept having strep throat every 6 weeks
all winter every year. When the dr. found out we were flipping her over to breath again, he decided it was time to have her tonsils out. No strep throat or breathing issues since. We were originally waiting for her to grow into her tonsil size, but that did not happen. Anyway,
good luck.

Snoring is not normal and means there is turbulent air flow. She should be seen by her pediatrician. Likely she will be referred to an ENT or sleep clinic to be evaluated for a narrowed airway. Often a tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy will fix the problem. It really should be evaluated.

Dear S.,
My son snores like a freight train.
Funny thing is...everyone makes accusations that he gets that from me. I always beg to differ as I am simply too dainty to snore. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it).
The truth is, we both snore. We talk in our sleep. We dream so much, it's like going to the movies every night.
(My daughter never dreams and never snores).
If I were you, I would mention it during your daughter's next check up just to make sure it's not tonsils or a breathing problem such as apnea.
All of that was ruled out for my son. (He was a snorer from minute one). Never overweight, no sinus infections, no tonsil problems or ear infections. He just can snore like crazy.
(I check out okay too, but other than that, so far, there is no actual proof whatsoever that the snoring stories about me are true. LOL)

Take care. As long as she's okay....just try to think of the snoring as happy, sleeping music...to your ears.

Hi S.,

Have you told your pediatrician about this? She may have Obstructive Sleep Apnea. My daughter, who is now 13 has suffered from OSA since she was little. We always thought she was a sound sleeper because she snored, but it is the contrary. She has had problems focusing in school and with friends. Recently she was diagnosed with ADHD and many kids who have OSA that is untreated can often be misdiagnosed. You may want to request a sleep study for your daughter which will can give you a better idea of her sleep habits and patterns.

The most common procedure done for OSA in children is a tonsillectomy. I wish we had known earlier about it.

My daughter just had her tonsils and adenoids removed and even at 13, she was in a lot of pain. They say the younger the child is when surgery is performed, the quicker the recovery time.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I completely agree with Carly. My little girl snores and so did her sisters when they were tiny. It's usually when she is over tired or when her allergies are bugging her. We use a saline nose spray on bad allergy days to help her breath in her sleep better. We also use a Vick's Vapor Plug during the winter.

Our youngest son snored since he was a baby and it always concerned us. We discovered the snoring was due to the fact he had enlarged tonsils...he actually had kissing tonsils because they touched each other they were so big. The doctors would not do surgery until he was atleast 5 years old. He had the surgery on Valentine's Day and that very night was the first night he slept without making a sound. It amazed us because his snoring had been so loud we could hear it through his closed door. Take a look inside her mouth, it might be worth a trip to see a head and neck doctor.

Yes, see your doctor. When I took my daughter in a couple months ago for a cold, the doctor asked if she snored all the time. He said he asked because it could be a health concern. His name is Dr. Sureth Sachdeva in San Ramon. He is very knowledgable and is even on talk shows sometimes.

My husband and our 6 yr old son snore. Our 18 yr old daughter and our 11 yr old son snore occasionally. Last night someone was snoring pretty heavy, and upon peeking in I was surprised it was our 11 yr old!

I wouldn't worry about it, unless there are other health concerns you believe could be associated. While my husband was diagnosed with Sleep Hypnopnea (a version of Apnea), I am not concerned about the 6 yr old at this time.

My son (3years old at the time) also had a snoring issue with no obvious reason for the problem;overweight or nasal congestion. So I took him to see his pediatrician after reading an article in Parents magazine regarding side effects of enlarged tonsils/adenoids. Bingo!! Hit the nail on the head. He had unusually large tonsils/adenoids and we opted to have them removed. Now he is a very quiet sleeper and it cleared up a couple other issues he was having. SO....something to check out. Good luck!!

Dear S.,

When my son was 5 years old, he snored like an old man. We were worried and took him to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist (also known as otolaryngologist). She said that although his tonsils were healthy, they were abnormally large and were blocking his breathing. This was also causing sleep apnea (waking), and could be harmful due to reduced oxygen intake. So, she did a tonsillectomy as well as removing his adenoids.

Although it was a bit scary for our young son to have an operation (with general anaesthesia), it was the best alternative. He recovered quickly and does not snore anymore. He is now a perfectly healthy 18 year old and going off to college in the fall!

Good luck with your daughter. I think if it worries you, you should definitely get a specialist's opinion.

Regards,

L.

Some kids snore! Do you or your husband snore?
Some are "mouth breathers". Caffeine can also make it worse, and when they are extra tired, they snore more. Flat back sleeping also makes it worse. Allergies also make it worse. Is the sound even and rhythmic? That is better than uneven,
ragged snoring, which can indicate sleep apnea. Does she still take nap, and does it happen then? I would ask your doc next time you have a well baby (or other appt), but not worry about it too much.

You need to have your pediatrician refer you to an Ear, Nose, & Throat specialist. Your daughter's adenoids are probably too large. My daughter's (17 months) snoring was loud and constant since February. She also breathed only thru her mouth and has had congestion issues since she was born. We had her adenoids removed earlier this month. She no longer snores and can also breathe thru her nose. We now have to turn up the monitor instead of turning it down. :) The ENT specialist said that her adenoids were too large and were covering part of her nasal passage. We were referred to Dr. Pevec in Sacramento who is with Sutter.
