I recently have been making smoothies for myself and my 2yr old son and 4 yr old daughter. What types of things can I add to be healthy? we have been just using fruits and veggies but would like a suppliment when I know they are feeling under the weather. For myself too!!

I have a vita mix.

What can I do next?

My neighbor washes and then freezes kale leaves for her smoothies. She takes the frozen leaves and blends them with the liquid first (coconut or almond milk) and then adds fruit for her smoothies. I had one yesterday (kale, almond milk, banana and pineapple), and it was delicious. Couldn't taste the kale at all!

Are you adding protein. I use protein powder. My children sometimes add peanut butter.

Do you love your vita mix? If so.... what do you like about it? I am considering getting one.

For you, whey protein. We usually don't get enough protein in our diets (unless there's an Atkins diet involved...). It's a great way to not have to eat as much meat...

Added - Patty, I love, love, love my Vitamix. If you get a chance, go to a demonstration. Costco has one ever so often and a sale price on the Vitamix machines. You can also make soup in it - piping hot and oh so delicious. Check out Vitamix's website and look at all the recipes.

If your kids already take a daily vitamin, they do not need additional vitamin stuff in their smoothies.
And if they already do eat a varied healthy diet, they do not need additional "vitamin" supplements in their smoothies.
And, per protein powders, these are typically for adults and the "serving size" is per adults. Not children.
If given too much protein powder, it can overload their kidneys etc. For example.
How much, for example, is appropriate for a 2 and 4 year old child?
You should ask your Pediatrician.

Smoothies made with fruits and veggies, is already "healthy" and full of nutrients.
And per young 2 and 4 year old children, you should go by their ages and what serving sizes is appropriate for them.

We make smoothies with anything we have on hand.
Be it fruits or veggies or Chia seeds or Flax seeds or peanut butter etc.
BUT we do not add.... those sweet things like Jamba Juice does. Like sherberts or anything.
We just use, straight fruits or veggies.

Examples of things I've put in are Flax Seed, Turmeric, Cinnamon, Ginger ( on the spices , a little goes a long way ) all kinds of fruits and vegees (string beans not good though) , frozen or fresh plain yogurt, 100% fruit juice, frozen berries ( high in Vit C) , chocolate chips on top for fun.

I add ground flaxseed to the ones I make. You get added fiber, protein and other nutrients.

Sometimes I add yogurt, milk or almond milk for a creamier taste and for a bit of protein. A nice combo is mango or strawberries, plain yogurt, a bit of cinnamon and ginger, and some honey, agave nectar or other sweetener. It is similar to a mango or strawberry lassi.

Adding bananas is a great way to sweeten up a smoothie. I do like the banana-peanut butter combo quite a bit.

Also you can cook oatmeal and dump it in there. It is super yummy, especially with apples and cinnamon or bananas and peanut or almond butter and some milk. Or pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice. Keeps ya full for a long time too!

Sometimes we will throw in some flax see or chia seeds as well.

What do I love about my vita mix?? EVERYTHING..
1. No parts to disassemble. easy to clean with two little kids and no time.
2. newer model..you can turn on and walk away and it will shut off when done.
3. you can make soup and yes, it is hot and ready to pour into a bowl to eat!

Very expensive in deed..I took out a loan on my 401K and glad I did!

Not sure about a supplement...but I add some greek yogurt to give some protein and make it creamy. Mmmmmmm!!

I am coveting your Vita Mix...sigh...a girl can dream! It is on my Christmas
list :)

Go to a health food store and ask about supplements. I know Jamba Juice has things they add...maybe you can find that kind of stuff at a Health Food store.
