Smoke Smell in Book?

I borrowed a book for a class I'm taking from my friend. Well, when I opened it up, the smell of cigarette smoke is horrible. So bad that I can't even stand to flip through the pages and read cause I've instantly gotten a headache. I just found out I'm pregnant - so my smell senses are on high alert - so maybe it's not that bad. Any idea if you can get the smell out of paper - before I spend $235 and buy a book. I'm not even sure if it's possible - but i thought i would ask. Now i know why my friend never wants to have get togethers at her house....i can only imagine.

What can I do next?

My mil loaned me a book from Joyce Meyer that I truly wanted to read, but it reaked. I propped it sort of open in a closed plastic bag with baking soda and baby powder in it. I left it a few days and then took the book out - shook all of the baby powder and baking soda and it was 100% better.

not sure if this will work but is worth a try. get a package of cat littler the kind that is just the cheap sandy stuff. you dn't need to pay extra for the clumping kind. spread it out in a shallow flat box and open the book up and stand it in the box sort of open with pages apart lay a garbage bag tented over the whole thing. leave it over night. the smell might not be gone but should be really diminished. i know my hubby spills all sorts of nasty smelling stuff in the garage floor and we just spread cat littler over it and leave it alone. sweep it up the next day and the smell is usually gone. its worth a try. good luck. and if you can't fix it then make sure you look on ebay for the book. i got my sons $1200 worth of college text books on ebay for a little less than $250. good luck.

I don't think you can get the smell out... if there is incense you can stand maybe you can cover the smell with that? Check out Amazon or half (dot) com for cheaper prices. Slugbooks (dot) com is a search engine to find the lowest price. Good luck!

Probably isnt a sure fire way. But I would try febreezing it. Not spraying it directly on the pages but close to it. Maybe that will help.

You can also find good deals on books at half.com my husband buys all his books from there that he needs for his class and they are always cheaper. You can even get a discount because your a student.

I'd put it in a large zip lock bag and sprinkle a whole box of baking soda in between the pages.
Let it sit in a warm place for awhile (in a sunny spot) or a day, then shake it out and see if it's any better.
The smoky smell might not be totally gone but it should be a lot better.
When you do read it, have a fan positioned so the air blows over the book and away from you.

Try setting it out in the sun for several hours - assuming you get a nice, bright, dry day. It might work and you're not out any money if it doesn't (except the cost of a new book - wow! What a price!).

My mom always swears that charcoal is the best odor remover. You could try putting it in a bag with a few bricks of charcoal. I did put a bowl of charcoal under my car seat after I hit a skunk once, it seemed to work pretty well. Good luck.

baking soda and unused coffee grounds both absorb odors. I suggest putting the book in a bag with one of those and leaving for a couple of days. You could even sprinkle some in between the pages. It'll brush off.

Maybe leaving the book outside or in a garage for awhile might help?

Since you are borrowing this book I would be really careful what I do to it. Try your library and if they don't have it they might be able to get it from another library.

Congratulations!

Try leaving it in a small bathroom with it open, pages flaired (stand it up) and then put a shallow bowl of white vinegar in there and shut the door. Leave it as long as you can. I can get horrible smoke smell out of my DH's coat if he's in someone's house in a night. There's absolutely no smoke residue left by the next morning. Try that. :) BTW, I'm not prego and I notice it a long way off.

Good question. I've come accross some books (2nd hand) that smell of smoke. I've left them sitting outside in the sun and that does help but it still smells. I never thought of the baking soda, that sounds like a great idea to me.
