I'd try ome baking soda in a stocking. Also rub some in there and vacuume it out if you have a small vacuume attachment. Then air out as well. It should be fine.
I like to look for good deals..who doesn't? So have been looking at inexpensive brand name purses on eBay...but some are from smoking homes. One in particular is canvas. I read online about trying to remove the smoke smell with coffee grounds (put fresh grounds in the foot piece of a pantyhose...put one inside the purse, and one outside and put both in an airtight box for 1-2 days).
Has anyone tried this or other methods? Does it work?

If it's canvas, can't you just out it through the washing machine? If not, spray it lightly with vinegar and put it out in the sun.
Baking soda or coffee. Baking soda in small dishes set around the house works for odors/smoke so it should help with your purse too.
Charcoal briquettes are amazing odor and moisture soakers.
Try your plan, just using charcoal instead.
It sould work nicely.
Best wishes.
Then your purse will smell like coffee. Hmm... not much improvement in my book.
If the purse is canvas, can it be washed? Some eBay folks use Febreeze, so that's an idea. Another would be to fill up a sock or densely knit stocking with baking soda, which is an odor absorber, and place it inside for a while.
My favorite purse was a gift from a smoker, so I put it in the garage for a while to air out. It's perfectly fine now and I almost never leave the house without it. I wouldn't use coffee grounds since I can't stand the smell of coffee.
Airing it out is the most used method and it works. It did take some serious cleaning to get the stench out of the loveseat, though. If it's washable then wash it then leave it to dry naturally.
Activated charcol (like the stuff you buy for fish tanks) in a sock in an air tight box. You can put wadded up newspaper in the box as well to help, you can wrap the purse inside a thin cloth or tissue paper if you're worried about newsprint getting on it. Is it washable at all? Gentle cycle in a pillow case and hang to dry. Add white vinegar in there.
No, never tried. But I did buy a baby swing from a supposedly (non-smoking) home one time. It wasn't. It smelled terribly. I washed all the parts I could, but the plastic smelled. I scrubbed the parts with lysol...whatever cleaner I could find but nothing helped. I had to let it air out and eventually it went away.
Also same thing happened at a garage sale with a purse....it smelled. I let it air out and then it was fine.
Not sure if either of these are the norm or if I was lucky or if I just got immune to the smell. But I'm pretty sure both times they aired out.
