Smell Issue

After my second son was born, I had the Mirena inserted for my method of birth control. My doctor told me that I would most likely not ever get a period again. Well she was wrong. I bled for almost 3 months straight. Not much, but everyday. Then it backed off. But every month, when i do get my period, there is a strong odor. Much stronger than before I had my son. It's only there during that time of the month. Not any other time. Any ideas?

So What Happened?

I went in last week and thankfully, my doctor was happy to remove the Mirena. She told she was a big fan of it. I love the midwives at the practice I go to, but I feel like they really push the Mirena without talking to you about everything that can go on. I was starting to feel it. Every time I moved it was there. I also had developed Bacterial Vaginitis. I'm so happy it's gone! I started my period the next day and strangely was thrilled to have my first "normal" period in almost nine years. I felt instantly better when I got up to get dressed. Not sure what we are going to do. I'm really sick of dealing with hormones, I guess we will just have to be REALLY careful!! =)

I have had a Mirena for almost 18 months, and while I have some annoying spot bleeding, I have NOT noticed an odor change.

My advice is the same as everyone else's- give the ob a call.

I am not a big fan of leave in birth control. Simply put it is a foreign object inside your body and it will get infected and infect you. I know that birth control has come a long way but I would say you may want to try some other form. I found myself bent over unable to stand up straight in severe pain and running a fever from that form of birth control. They pulled it out and kept me in the hospital for several days running anti-biotics. A period is a natural thing. I am sure the good Lord has a reason for us to have one. I would trust HIM before medical science as he built us and should know better how to keep us running. God bless you and good luck.

Me too! And I chalk it up to bw that the "stuff" is getting stuck due to the IUD being put in.

That really doesn't sound good. I've heard of a lot of women getting uterine punctures and infections from the IUD.

The period is common, I have also read it's common to bleed off and on the whole time you have the IUD (yeah, these women were expecting no periods and even after 6 months still had a constant period.)

A friend of mine has a cervical cup and she just leaves it in, take it out and washes it occasionally, and puts it back in. No hormones to mess things up and no condoms to have to be inserted each time.

Wishing you health,
S.

Hi S.--I am a Certified Nurse Midwife, and insert Mirenas regularily. I advise my clients who have bleeding problems to come in for treatment with birth control pills, usually for 1 month. Sounds like you have a vaginal infection called bacterial vaginitis, which is very common, and couses an annoying odor. See your provider for testing and treatment with antibiotics.
thanks, Kathy
