Sleeping Problems - Harvey, LA

My 2 year old still wakes up every night. When she wakes up and I am still up I go in her room and tell her to lay back down, be a big girl and go back to sleep. She usually does for a little while. She starts off in her room every night. I know we probably shouldn't but when she wakes in the middle of the night we put her in the bed with us so we can get sleep. She is in our bed every night. Lately, once she gets in our bed she asks nonstop for water until I give her a sip. This has been going on about a week. I don't really mind her in the bed with us too much because she usually sleeps once she's in our bed, but I think she should probably stay in her own bed especially since we have a new baby coming. Does anyone think she'll just grow out of it? My sister in law has 5 kids and everyone has slept with her since they were born, when they turn 3 they go sleep in their room with no problems. Please help!

My daughter went through the exact same thing...and we did the same thing too; we'd let her crawl in bed with us and just stay there because we both work and who wants to fight over going back to bed at 2 or 3 in the morning?
What I did do that worked at least some of the time is I told her that sleep helps her grow but it only works if she sleeps in her own bed. Not sure about yours but my daughter is obsessed with wanting to grow and be big and strong so she was more inclined to stay in her bed... there are still nights (now at 4 years old) that we get our little visiter in the middle of the night but it's no longer daily and I enjoy cuddling with her at night and know that in another few years I'll be wishing for the days she wanted to snuggle at night so I don't get upset. As far as the new baby coming I'm sure that will cause a bit of a set back because your daughter will be wanting to do whatever she can to spend time with you and demand your attention but hopefully you can get her out of the habit before the baby's born... Best of luck and enjoy it while you can!!

What a good mommy you are to let your little one snuggle up to you when she needs to! I love sleeping with my 2 yr old. You're absolutely right; they sleep better with you than without. And we keep a sippy cup of water on the bed side table; he won't sleep without it. We just had another baby, too, and here's how it played out: I wanted to sleep with the newborn (makes night nursing so much easier) but didn't trust the toddler and the baby in the same bed. So daddy laid down with the toddler in his own room at night and I laid down with the little one. Of course, daddy is more than welcome to sneak back to our bed once the toddler is asleep! If he wakes up in the middle of the night, with a nightmare or lonely or what have you, daddy lays down with him again (and often finishs out the night there). I have faith he'll eventually do every night by himself (maybe when he's three like your sister's kids). It's not the conventional mainstream way to do things, but it works for us. We both work full time, so we cherish the nights just curled up with the kids. Wish you the best!

I'm going through the same thing. My 2 yr old is good about going to sleep in her bed but most nights she wakes up and we just put her in the bed w/ us. She also asks for her cup. I have a 7 yr old too and I remember going through sleeping problems with him too but he grew out of it so I'm not real worried about it. I usually just go get her when she cries and we both go back to bed. I'm pretty sure that your daughter and mine will start sleeping through the night again soon.

Both of our children always asked for water during the night and I wasn't sure if they were actually thirsty or just trying to get my attention. To get them to stop waking me up, I put a sippy or sports bottle (that doesn't spill if tipped over) on their night-stand. If you don't add ice, the cup won't sweat during the night and just to make certain the furniture was protected, I would sit it on a small rag. Sometimes I would hear them sucking on the cup and they would always go back to sleep without getting up. I told them this was like a big kid and they loved it. Hope this helps!

Hi!
There is hope for you. My 4yo was the exact same way as your daughter. We thought we would never get her to stay in her bed. When she was 3 1/2 I gave birth to her baby sister. We were determined to have her sister sleeping through the night, and she was by 3wks old. We made such a big deal over her sister sleeping through the night, that she started to as well.(We bragged to anyone and everyone in front of her about her sister)It was like a light switch came on with her, and she has ever since(one yr later). She also takes a sippy cup full of ice water with her to bed and doesn't get up because she is thirsty. (ice melts during the night making the water last longer) We no longer have to worry about those late night wake ups. We will never let the little one see what it is like to sleep with us, so she won't know what she is missing. (Been there done that, won't do it again) I just wanted to let you know that there is hope to sleep with your husband alone again.:-)
