All my infants wore nightgowns with mittens built into the sleeves. I give them to my children for my grandbabies also. They keep baby warmer, are easier to change diapers, let the baby squirm around and above all have the built in mittens. As for him being limp that is normal and I used to love playing with their floppy arms and legs when they were in a deep sleep. Its so cute.

It sounds like you're a first time Mom?

I'd highly recommend asking your Pediatrician for a copy of "My Baby's First Year". They should have given it to you free at your first well-baby visit after his birth. It was so helpful to me in the first year to reference things and look it up.

If you're concerned, don't be shy about calling the pediatrician's office and asking if this is all normal behavior. Most offices have a triage nurse on the phones to take those calls and help you adjust to all the craziness of being a new parent and to suggest when you need to bring him in to make sure everything is OK.

Newborns do sleep very deeply, and your breathing pattern chances when you sleep also.
They make mitts for babies' hands, but you can also put socks on his hands to keep him from doing any damage when he scratches.
Good luck!

All newborns are limp , they have no muscle tone but you will notice over the coming months how the arms and legs start to take shape. They also breathe quite fast in the early weeks. As for clawing face , yes they all do that aswell , they have no control over arm movements (it's like someone having hold of your arms and moving them around for you and you can't stop it). Put a pair of mittens (or improvise with a pair of socks to stop the scratches).

Haha! We used to call it the rubber chicken effect! That's how we knew it was safe to move the baby from our arms to the crib! It's just that deep sleep, and it is normal!

Sounds normal. As faras the breathing goes, just be sure you aren't using detergent or fabric softener that can be allergenic, so he's not breathing that in all night. Babies literally pass out.....enjoy it.

I don't think it's tense - they just have these reactions with their muscles. Put little socks on his hands or swaddle him.

Isn't it amazing how perfectly relaxed they are - seems all normal to me! Enjoy! Stop reading about all the potentially horrible things that can go wrong, peer over his crib and just smile at the beautiful new life you have been entrusted with. It's okay to have fun and be happy!

All perfectly normal. Keep gloves on his hands for the first week or so, until you can start filling his nails. There really isn't much you can do to stop the clawing. In fact, my 12 week old has scabs all over his head from trying to get his hand in his mouth!

Yes, when they are truly asleep, they go totally limp --thus the phase "sleeps like a baby." And yes, the breath is very raspy and nasal. They start out breathing only through their noses to breastfeed.

I know how you feel because I was a nervous first time mom as well, more so with him because he was 5 wks early and it's understandable. Yes, everything you're saying does sound normal and yes, you may want put mittens or socks on his hands to prevent from scratching so much and the limpy part, they are new and no muscles have come into place yet. I encourage you if you are worried, call the pediatrician's office and ask and they may want you to bring him in to make sure and that is normal to be shy and don't feel that it's ridiculous or feeling odd calling. Concerned mothers do that and should do that if they don't know if their child or baby is doing or acting "odd" and please don't hesitate to call the office and if you are concerned go ahead regardless if others say no, it's normal, relax. You're a GREAT mom for caring and loving your child.
