Hi A.,
A newborn will typically sleep 14-20 hours a day, so if her total sleep falls into this range, then it's very normal. She will soon be out of the newborn stage and likely awake and alert for more of the day.

Yes perfectly normal. Enjoy it while you can because as he gets older, he will be awake more.

From birth til about 12 weeks, my daughter slept about 22-18 hours day. It seemed like she was only alert for about an hour or two each day and always appeared to be sleeping while eating.
The doctor was never concerned since she was gaining weight and, on track developmentally, was alert when she was awake and she could usually be aroused from sleep. She is now 3 months old and awake for much longer periods.
It never hurts to talk to you pediatrician if you are worried about anything though.

A six week old should be getting about 16 hrs of sleep in 24 hours. Good sleeping habits are so easy to establish when they are this young. Try to feed your baby when he (I am just going to use he) wakes up rather then right before sleeping, He should begetting about 7-8 feedings in 24hours. eating about every 2 1/2 -3 hours at this point, staying awake for about 1- 1 1/2 hr and sleeping for 1 1/2-2. Make sure you wake your baby up for a feeding after it has been 3 hours. Other wise you will not get all the calories in that you need to. The only time you do not wake him up and the only time you feed before sleeping is at bed time. Feed your baby, do your sleeping routine, and then lay him down to sleep. Then let him wake you up when he is hungry. Gradually he will sleep longer and longer. He will need less sleep in the day because he will be getting more at night and be getting older.
If you want more info or want to know my resources, send me a message.
Good luck

Yes. You really should buy a baby book to learn about these types of things.

It depends on your definition of alot. How much does he or she sleep? But yes, they do seem to sleep a lot. Is he or she gaining weight?
