We will be staying at a bed and breakfast for a wedding weekend in NY this fall, but the B&B doesn't have any cribs. Normally we would take the pack & play for our baby (who will be 10 months old at the time of the trip), but we are flying and I don't think we can take it, due to the high extra baggage fees, since we already will be taking a lot of stuff as we are traveling with a baby. Plus it is heavy and we won't be able to carry any more stuff between the two of us plus carrying a baby. Any ideas on alternative (but safe) ways for the baby to sleep? She has never slept in bed with us before, I would be afraid she would suffocate in the pillows or get squished, etc., plus my husband and I both toss and turn a lot at night which would wake her up, plus I always have to get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Also, that wouldn't work for her naps during the day by herself, because obviously she could fall off the bed. The guestroom will have an extra bed - is it a crazy idea to put the mattress of that bed on the floor and let her sleep on that? (If she rolls off at least it wouldn't be far - but I don't know, maybe that would still be serious if she hit her head even from that short distance?). Or is it dangerous since she wouldn't be contained like she would in a crib? Obviously she could crawl off of it if she is awake. Any ideas? I'm not sure what else to do, but I don't want to do anything dangerous. Anyone ever heard of places that rent out portable cribs, etc.? (We will have a rental car after we leave the airport). Any friends or family driving to the wedding? Could they bring a P & P? Try to borrow one from someone that lives near the wedding location or have someone there borrow a P & P for you to use.
have you looked on www.onestepbeyond.com? they have lots of smaller compact travel beds for babies. one folds up very small and opens up into a sort of pop up tent. it looks pretty neat.
Check w/the b&b and see if they would have an objection to you sending the portable crib by UPS and you could send it home the same way. You could arrange for the pickup when you send it and it would arrive home a few days after you. If you send it regular ground, it should not cost much at all and you could pay for the pickup at the same time. Best of luck

Hmm.. It depends on how old the baby is, as to whether I would put her on a mattress. I wouldn't put her in the floor unless she is past the putting stuff in her mouth phase and she can pull her self up. Also depending on how old she was if I would put her in bed with us. We are both light sleepers so I don't have the same concerns as you on that senerio.
Do you know anyone in town that has kids? If it is in NY City they have cribs, strollers, highschair and other baby stuff for rent. In NYC they have everything for rent :>) Here is a website I found.

we had twins and traveled all the time we just put them on the bed and surrounded them with rolled up towels the couldn;t smother or roll off

First of all, good for you for asking these questions far enough in advance to really find the right answer for you and your family. I will preface my amswers by saying that I am the mother of three who has travelled, with babes of all ages. Because of the the age of your baby and the fact that she has never slept with you, I recommend you putting her on the spare mattress on the floor with pillows on the floor around it. She probably won't roll off. If she does, she won't get hurt. I'm guessing you won't go far during nap time. You know about how long she sleeps. You'll check in, so she won't have too much time to get into trouble! Try not to worry too much. She will adapt. Try to have fun.

I know this may be a little pricey, but you could ship your pack 'n play to the B&B, where you are staying. Just call them a head of time and have them keep an eye out for it, UPS should be able to give you a good estimate one the day it would arrive, so you could coordinate to have it arrive the day before you get there. I also liked they other suggestion of borrowing one from a friend or family member in NY... if that is an option of course. It may be worth asking the bride, if she knows anyone who might have one you can borrow... even if you don't know them. My son is 12 months, he has not slept with us in our bed, and I recently spent the night out of town with him and tried to put him in bed with me when he woke up a little early... he thought it was playtime!!!! Therefore... I never went back to sleep! Good Luck!!!
Hello, I am a military wife living in Germany. I had my first child this past July. One of the gifts I recieved was a little bed with 4 soft, vented sides and a tiny light on the head board. This tiny bed fits between me and my husband. It is by First Year, and I think it is called the Safe and Secure Sleeper. It is designed for travel, as it folds up nicely and has a handle. It is light, and I really enjoy it. I have not seen it at our German Toys R Us, but our base exchange did have it. What is great about it is that you cannot roll onto the baby or hit the baby, etc., and the baby cannot roll away or go under the covers or slip between the head board and matress. This works very well for us. The cost if I remember is about $30.00. I hope this helps. As far as getting it there; mail it, because it is quite light to carry. Enjoy your trip .
