Sleep Sugestions for Moms

Okay so my daughter is sleeping thru the night, my husband sleeps perfectly...me on the other hand am finding it difficult to wind down. It is not as if my daughter wakes up early and I am struggling throughout the day, infact she wakes up between 9 and 10. I could sleep in, but I am finding that I am missing the mommy groups events and other things. I tried not drinking coffee, doesn't work. When I was sick with broncitis (spelling I know) I told the doctor about this, he prescribed ambiem. It was as if I was a new woman, not cranky not stressed, just fine. Waking up a bit earlier was even better. My illness got better within a 1/2 week. I now am right back to where I was before. I don't want to depend on sleeping pills. Any suggestions. Oh, my husband snores as does my cat. It does keep me up as well. This is really annoying. Thanks, Jen

I experienced the same thing not too long ago. Are you exercising regularly? When I started exercising consistently, my sleeping improved dramatically...hope it helps!

Hi J. ,

Health food stores carry something called sublingual Melatonin. I think they go up to 5mg in strength. They are pleasant tasting and you dissolve one under your tongue ( or , if you get lower mg , you would use more , giving yourself up to 5 mg )about 30 minutes before bed.
Another thing you could try is Valerian root extract. It SMELLS , but if you took about an ounce of Dr. Pepper and mixed it in , you could down it quickly with minimal bad taste. I have used both of these with success.
Best of luck to you ! ~ A.

You said you "could" sleep in, but you didn't say what time you wake up in the morning, or what time you are trying to go to sleep at night. Maybe try a winding down ritual before heading to bed. They say for some people, the computer and/or TV stimulates the brain so try being away from both for an hour or so before you want to wind down... then try different rituals until you find what works for you-- like meditation or yoga or reading or whatever. My husband's snoring is so bad that we don't actually sleep in the same room. I kept quiet about it for a long time because I was embaraased, but I found out a LOT of couples don't sleep in the same room because they sleep better seperately.

Try the soft earplugs; that may help with the snoring situation. You could also try a warm bath (or shower) before bed, and a cup of chamomile tea, and no caffeine after 4:00p.m, including softdrinks. Do you have problems falling asleep, or do you wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back to sleep?
Also, if you watch TV before bed, maybe you could turn off the set 1/2 hour before you want to be asleep and read in bed instead.
Good luck!

I had problems getting back to a normal sleeping schedule after my daughter started sleeping through the night. I did some research and started taking a magnesium supplement with my daily vitamins and it has worked really well. I also have a husband that snores at night and started using foam earplugs to muffle the sound. I used to wake up every two hours or so at night, now I get at least 6 hours of un-interrupted sleep. It's made a huge difference in how I feel during the day. Hope this helps...good luck!

I have the same problem! As far as your husband's snoring, have him try the Breathe Right Spray. They make the strips as well but the spray has really been working for my husband. I think it's fine to take the Ambien until you develop a sleep pattern. You can wean yourself off as you start sleeping on your own. You can try an herbal sleep as well. I've tried Chamomille Tea, warm milk etc but nothing seems to do the trick. I'm hoping people post some good suggestions ;-) Good Luck!

Hi, sometimes it might be a hormone issue. I would go to my ob/gyn and have them do a blood test. Their are many natural products that can help. I have some sleepytime tea before bed and read mindless magazines before bed and that helps. I also used a biofeedback tape that helped me relax. I started using earplugs the kind that are really soft foam. When I had my son I stopped using ear plugs and we have a fan for white noise. I am a very light sleeper and the white noise drowns out outdoor noise but can still hear my son without a monitor. Oh, and turn the monitor off. You will be able to hear your baby if they really need you. I hope this helps. Good luck.
