Sleep No More

So one of my twin 20 month old toddlers has decided sleep is no longer important. They have been going down around 8 at night and sleeping soundly until 7:30-9:00 sometimes. Sunday morning one of them woke up at 6:45 crying and didn't want to go back to sleep which woke up the other one. That night she was so scared to go to sleep and she cried for awhile. Last night, though she was fine. But she woke up at 6:30 crying and didnt want to go back to sleep. She woke up the other twin which also didn't want to go back to sleep. They have a blanket and a night light. After 10 months of no sleep, we finally had to let them cry it out because we were so exhausted. Are we back to this now? Or is this just a phase? I know they are teething yet AGAIN but I did give them medicine before bed. They did have a little runny nose for a few days but are acting normal during the day. What gives?

What can I do next?

Hate to break it to you, but you were super spoiled with them sleeping so late. 8-6.45 is totally normal for a toddler. Mine both periodically go through jags where they're up earlier than usual. It tends to last a week or two and then they snap out of it. Of course, "earlier than usual" for us means about 5.45 (they're normally up about 6.45).

I'd just go get the one that's crying and bring her into bed with you in the hopes that she doesn't wake the other. Other than that, there's probably not much you can do, except go to bed earlier yourself.

Good luck.

Um, sleeping from 8:00 to 6:30 is perfectly normal. Most toddlers wake up early.

Sleeping from 8 pm-730-900 am is a LOT of sleep. They are probably just getting to the point where they do not need that much sleep anymore. 630 am is a pretty standard wake up time for toddlers, all three of mine are/were generally up before 6 am every day. Be thankful for the extra sleep you have been getting!

Hi F.,

Oh... I know very well what you are talking about since I've been there/done that with my twins. Mine are now "big kids" (9 yrs. old) But from what I remember is that things from social behavior, eating, sleeping, etc... went in phases. Although.... I am not promising you things will turn in your favor for sleep. (At least not for awhile...... mine are currently still sleeping at 9:30 am ! lol!)
You do have to remember that as children grow older they sometimes outgrow the amount of sleep they used to require. (Even if your little ones are going to bed at 8 and getting up at 6:30, that's 10 and a half hours of sleep.) Maybe not as much sleep as you'd want them to get since getting up that early to watch two active little ones can get quite demanding for a mom who's still trying to wake up herself. It seems as though you have a "new work schedule" for now. I would try to go to bed yourself by 10:00 so that you could get 8 hours of sleep before attending to your twins. I loved the mornings where I could actually feel awake enough to get out of bed 15 minutes before the "commotion" started to enjoy a cup of coffee in solitude! When I needed a bit more time to wake up, I would bring one baby back in my bed to cuddle, rub his/her back & put the music/t.v. on to wake myself up.

Enjoy your little ones. The days may creep by as toddlers, but the years will seriously fly by!

Happy Holidays,

J.

You may need to CIO again... Twin 1 woke up and you came in... tried it again and it worked. Sometimes you have to "redo" the CIO, especially after a cold or flu, teething or an extended trip.
