Hello, I am trying to get my 9 month old son used to drinking out of a sippy cup. Right now he uses one to drink water only, but it drips all over him. I'd like to start using it for breastmilk, but don't want to waste any due to spilling. Do you have any recommendations? Currently, he uses the Nuby with two handles he can hold. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your suggestions! We just purchased the Playtex sippy cups from Babies r us (on sale for $3 off) with the handles. So far our son is using them fine and there have been no spills :). He figured out how to hold it and that he had to suck to get the water out, unlike his old cup that flowed quickly and sometimes splashed all over him. The spout is a harder plastic than the Nuby so that took some getting used to, but so far so good. Thanks!

One big problem with sippies (as I see it) is the issue of how much suction a kid has to use to get the liquid out. Having to suck really hard can contribute to ear infections. But, more "loose/leaky" cups often don't require as much suction...therefore, less risk. I experienced this with Born Free. I just used non-sticky stuff like water or herbal tea..so the mess was not an issue.

I started my daughter off with the Nuby also because I liked the idea of the softer spout, but had problems with leaking also. Her babysitter recommended Playtex and we got some of those at Target and I love them. She's now 15 months old and work great for her. They don't have handles and she's fine with them (got them around 9 months old).

I tried MANY sippy cups before I found one that does not leak. I use the Playtex sipster cups for my twins and they never leak. They do not have handles and are more like a bottle so they took to it pretty easily. The 2 pack comes in boy/girl colors and is about $6.00 each. Also, the valve is just one piece of plastic which makes it easy to clean. Here is a link at Amazon but I also found them at Target

Hope this helps.

We've had a lot of good luck with several.

I've put the links below so you can see them as well as a description in case that helps:

Munchkin
Couldn't find a link, but the Dora and Diego ones are great, and the valves have not failed us!

Platex
The insulated ones are really good (look like a travel coffee mug) - no problems.

Hi, N.!

The only sippy cup I have ever used for my son is the NUK orthodontic cup. It has two handles which make it easy for little ones to hold, but you can remove them to make the cup have no handles. The only time I've had them leak is if I put the part that the baby sucks on in wrong! :-) Seriously, it's a great cup. I babysit a little girl, and her mom provides many different brands, and I have had every one of them leak at one time or another. The NUK cups sell at WalMart and I many different grocery stores for around $3.00 each, I believe. They are clear with designs on the bottom (the blue has sail boats).

Good luck!

I love the Munchkin ones with the soft lids. They don't leak at all. However, your son will have to already know that he needs to suck to get the liquid because it won't pour into his mouth at all.

We only use stainless steel (no plastic here!) and we used Klean Kanteens with our son with the sipper top, but they were good at using the sports top around 9mos. They never used a bottle though, only breastfed and then to the sipper for water around 9mos.

Kleen Kanteen has a sippy cup that doesn't leak at all, but it has not handles. No BPA, either. We love ours. Now we've transitioned it to a sports bottle w/ the sports bottle top instead of the sippy cup top. Love it and they last forever. This is the best price I've found: http://www.thestorkwearhouse.com/ProductDetails.asp?Produ...

All of the sippy cups i have tried eventually start to leak accept the playtex cups. I always get the ones with the hard plastic white piece in the top. I have tried the clear plastic squishy kind as well and once they get wet they slip. Hope this helps.

Munchkin makes a great one! It's a straw "flip top" and the child has to bite down on the straw to 'open' it up so the liquid passes through. There are also two handles as well (easy to hold or to tether on to a stroller.) We have many of these cups and they are by far my daughter's favorite. Be sure to get the one with the handles, the one without the handles leaks a bit (same company).....

I am also using a Nuby sippy with two handles and it works great! I have never had it leak for me. My son is rough with his sippy cup, too... throwing it on the ground, shaking it up and down and banging it on his highchair tray... and the only time I had it leak was when the nipple wasn't on correctly so that the grooves in the nipple and top weren't lined up.

I don't know how to read the other answers to see if it's already been said, but the Avent Magic Cup is awesome. My 9 month old loves it, it won't spill because the baby has to suck to get the water out, which is a natural progression from breast/bottle to cup. We also use kiddie cups at restaurants with a straw and she mastered that really quick...surprised me too!

Playtex or any of the ones that have the clear valve that fits in the spout. Those are the only ones I buy b/c I have bought previous off brands that stated, "no leak", but that's all they did WAS leak! The Playtex also has a BPA free cup which is safer for our little ones.

I agree that Playtex is probably the best, but I can't say our Playtex have never leaked. However, you might make note of this for the future, when he is a bit older. We bought the CONTIGO 4 pak of sippies from Costco for my son when he was just over 2 and although the package says 4+, he figured it out immediately. It requires that you push a long, large button on the top's side and a panel slides away from the drinking hole. He keeps one in his crib and one in the car, where they have fallen over numerous times and have never, ever leaked. Not once. They are also easy to wash because there is nothing to take apart.

It is not good to use a sippy cup. He is stil a baby first of all and the best for his future oral health is to breast feed correctly. The sippy cup as with the bottle teach volumes. It is only breast feeding that teaches suckling. Not sucking. Suckling is the only way to develop the muscles of the face to have nice bone structure and teeth. Otherwise by about 7 to 10 years old you will start noticing mouth breathing and long face and teeth askew high vaulted hard palate and soft palate hanging lo so air will get into stomach along with food when swallowing therefore causing digestion problems. And the allergies and possible asthma and the list goes on. M. Oral Facial Myofunctional Therapist

I have a stainless steel Klean Kanteen sippy cup (it uses the Avent sippy top), and it never leaks. I like that they can use it later as a water bottle, you just have to get a different top. It is more expensive, but worth it. It also took my son a little time getting used to it, they have to drink a little differently than other sippy cups.
