Hi S.,
I am a young mommy too (I'm 22) and my son is 11 months and he just recently started drinking from a sippy cup of his own desire. My suggestion to you is to leave the sippy-cup on the table or high chair, have it visible for him, let him play with it. We tried the Avent ones, the Gerber ones, and the Playtex ones and he was just not interested, so we did a bottle with water with the little training handles to get him used to holding it by himself. Finally, one day about 2 or 3 weeks ago, he got a little interested in my drinking water from a cup, so I tried these disposable ones from the 1st years that have a little more give with the spout so it isn't as hard for him to suck water from. He took it and started drinking from it by himself! It doesn't even have handles, but ridges that make it easy to hold. At my son's daycare the teacher told me that it isn't even that big of a deal until they are 1 to really even try a sippy cup. So, in short, make the sippy cup visible but let your little one go at his own pace. You'll be amazed at what he might do to surprise you!
Good luck!
M.
P.S.
The 1st year sippy cups are plastic- not too hard, not too soft.

And they are disposable! Very affordable!
