I am 24 weeks pregnant and yesterday I experienced a strange pain that started on my middle right side part of my back and persistenly got worse spreading to my side and near my ribs. I couldn't get comfortable in any position and Tylenol couldn't help. During this time I was also experiencing constipation (after having loose bowel movements all morning) and sharp vaginal pains (which my Dr. told me was the typical ligament pain from uterus stretching).
My question is ... I have heard everything from it's normal to it could be kidney stones, appendicitis ... ahhhh! I was just at the Dr.s yesterday and don't want to go back if this is a normal "growing" pain. Any advice from the lovely mama's out there I'd greatly appreciate it!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The pain never went away (in fact it got ALOT worse) so I went to my OB/GYN and she said all signs point to kidney stones!! She prescribed some Percocet for the pain and another medicine for the nauseau that the pain was causing. I had an ultrasound done tonight to see if there are in fact stones, which there weren't any that they saw!! I was told to take the pain meds and if they didn't work I'd have to call the Dr. and be admitted to the hospital. Otherwise, if the meds help I have to followup with them to see if the pain still exists after a couple days (can't take Percs for more than 3-4 days to protect the baby) for further tests. Thanks for all of your advice & I'll keep you all posted!

I always have something weird the few days right after an appointment. If it concerns you, call and talk to the nurse. She may tell you that it is nothing to worry about, but they will note it in your file. She may also tell you that you should come in. Either way, your mind can relax a bit.

If the pain radiates down your right leg and you find that walking around is getting painful, then it's most likely an appendicitis. I felt like I was constipated (but still able to go) and the pain gradually got worse (went from a side stitch feeling to absolute pain) within 2 days. Act like you're going to climb up on an exam table with your right leg (Picture how a child would do it). If it's extremely uncomfortable, I'd have it checked out right away. I did not vomit at all, but felt like I had been hit by a bus. If in doubt, I'd be safe and get it checked... You don't want to have a c-section at 24 weeks!

I've had some awful bouts of ligament pain with this pregnancy (I'm 24 wks) that are far worse than anything I remember from the last one. That said they had eased by the next day. If everything clears up fairly quickly it's probably just that but if not it could be something else. Does your ob's office have a nurse you can talk to by phone? Or will the dr call you back if you leave a message? If hasn't gone away I'd check in with them again.

When I was pregnant and had a strange severe pain I went to the doctor right away and it turned out to be a kidney infection which they treated with an antibiotic. But I did not have the sharp vaginal pains that you say you are having. I would say call your doctor to be safe.

2 things I thought of reading your post (before I got to the part where you mentioned it). Kidney stones & appendicitis. I have had both during pregnancy and the pain is very similar in both conditions. Keep an eye on it & if the pain becomes unbearble and you are vomiting then go to the ER as it is likely to be appendicitis. Kidney stones you can flush through by drinking lot's & lot's of water all day long.

Looking back when I was around 30 weeks I didn't feel quite right , a few niggly pains that I put down to being a 3rd pregnancy and running around after 2 other kids all day , at 34 weeks I had abdominal pain that rapidly got worse as the day went on , by the evening I was vomiting , I called my doctor and he told me to go to the hospital , 3 days I was kept on pain killers and the pain would not stop (doctor insisting it was kidney stones) , in the end they decided to do an MRI scan and my appendix had ruptured , I had to have emergency surgery where they delivered my daughter and removed the appendix , long recovery for me and felt awful , all that could have been avoided if they did an MRI at the start , an appendix can be removed if it has not ruptured and the pregnancy can continue.

So my advise if you have any doubt and you are in unbearable pain go to hospital and tell them to rule out an appendicitis first.

I hope you feel better
