Sick Kids - Keokuk,IA

My sisters kids (ages 3 & 4) have been sick going on 3 weeks now. They have been vomiting and have diarrhea. At first we thought it was the stomach flu because it went on for a couple days and then they got better. But within a day or so, it started again – for both of them. It goes for a day or two where they are better and then it starts all over again with the vomiting and diarrhea. The odd thing is it’s both of them – not just one. And my sister and her husband have not gotten sick (yet!). The kids have been to the Dr but the Dr just says it’s a bug going around. My sister persisted and they did blood work and gave a stool sample to run tests on. The blood work came back fine and they are waiting on the stool results (hope to get those Monday). The Dr still seems to think this is just some sort of bug but it seems weird to all of us for a stomach bug to go on this long. The kids still eat and drink well in between their bouts of sickness so at least they aren’t dehydrated but it’s still hard on their little systems – not to mention stressful for mom and dad. Have any of you had any experience with this kind of stuff?

My co-workers daughter had this bug also. Same thing happened - sick for a day or two and then fine for a few days, then sick again. It was just a bug and it did eventually pass, but they did multiple blood tests, she was in the hospital for tests on a couple of occassions and then she just got better. It's hard to see kids so sick, but it should pass on its own. Good luck.

Usually a person develops antibodies to a bacteria or virus, so the fact that both children are getting sick repeatedly is of concern. I'd be checking with the doctor again (if it continues, get a second opinion) and looking at the food they regularly eat as well, just to be on the safe side. Check expiration dates, etc. Did they have a recent trip? I ask because there are waterborne microbes/illnesses in some areas in the US (ghiardia, for example) that residents develop a tolerance for, but visitors suffer from, so that's another thing to consider. Poor kiddos. I hope this remedies itself soon for their sakes.

My son had this last year. It resolved itself in about a month. They didn't test his stool, but the doctor mentioned it might have been a rotovirus. Maybe you could ask your doctor if they have ruled that out or not? Best of luck to you- our son ended up in the ER and had to have fluids pumped through an IV- not fun!!

3 weeks is too long. I think they need the opinion of another doctor. Is it something like Rotovirus. Is it a GI parasite? Is it a food allergy or intolerance? There are soooo many "Is its". I think she needs to see another doctor. In the mean time, stick to a Brat Diet. Grains, Bananas and Milk Free. RICE and the water off of the rice are magic cures. Do that but also gt another opinion. Guess what, if you go and read any of my other replies I usually reply; "this is fine and normal" and this time I am saying the opposite. Get anotheer opinion!

My niece had Rotovirus and it sounded much like your sisters kids. She would "get better" and then would get sick again. My sister had to serioulsly steam clean and bleach every surface to get rid of the virus. Maybe thats the culprit?

This may be a long shot especially since this is affecting 2 children, but my son had something like this last spring--vomiting and diahrrea. He'd be fine then it would start up again. We thought he had a bug, but it turned out that he had severe constipation. He had vomiting and diarrhea because his intestines had no room to put the digested food through. So it would come back up his esophagus and try to "squirt around" (I know, gross) the hard feces that wasn't coming out. Constipation in children is very common. It would be worth considering. In any case, sounds like your sister might need a second opinion.

The same thing happend to my daughter. She was sick for a couple of days, then got better, then got sick, then got better. And every time she got sick it was worse. I finally took her to the dr after she threw up twice in one day. He told me the same thing, that it was just a bug going around. I finally remembered what my mother told me that a dr. told her when she was sick with the flu, Change the tooth brush every day. I didn't change the tooth brush but what I did do was stick it upside down in a cup of listerine, the original. She got better in about a day and a half. I have since then kept all of our tooth brushes down in listerine. Think about it, it would be like using the same cup over and over and never cleaning it. If your sick, even if your body fights it off, when you use the cup or tooth brush again you get sick again. I wouldn't think that the kids BOTH being sick is all that weird. If they play with the same toys, accidently drink out of the same cup or if their toothbrushes are close enough together to touch, go to the same school, anything like that. I would also suggest to have her get into a habbit of spraying everything down with either lysol or listerine, the original, in a spray bottle every night before going to bed.

Well I experience with sick kids. My kids seemed to get respiratory infections more then their friends. Last year our house was the first year we didn't get the flu in 9 yrs. I have 3 kids.

Anyhow I am concerned for your sisters children. A normal flu or stomach virus goes in and out of your body fairly quick. 24- 48 hrs. Throwing up more than 4 days how would they stay hydrated? The diarrhea is bad also but the vomiting for that long. Its not normal. I would think they would need to go to hospital and be connected to IV to get liquid in them.
Please let us know how it resolves. I will pray for your family.

I would either push the doctor to look a bit closer or I would look for another doctor. I know a good ped is hard to find, but so worth it.

Definitely check for a stomach parasite, but has a milk allergy been ruled out? Or lactose intolerance? She could see how they do off of milk, or all dairy for a week. It's not easy to stay off of milk or all dairy for a whole week, but worth it if it makes them better. Just a suggestion. Good luck!
