Hello,

It's been 9 days since my 9 1/2 month old has had diahrrea and a few episodes of vomiting. Luckily no fever, but the pediatriations keep saying he will get over it. But it's been 9 days!!! I really don't know what to do anymore. I've been giving him diluted formula, rice water, pedialyte, rice cereal, rice, apple sauce but nothing changes (tried the banana but he will vomit it right out). Also tried giving him soy formula (vomits). Does any one have any other suggestions? Is it a bug? Allergy? I'm taking him back to the pediatrition this afternoon.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your support and recommendations. It's been two days since his diahrrea has gotten better, at least it's not just liquid. He's more alert and wants to play and eat! I took him back to the pediatrician and she had me collect some of his stool for some lab tests. We should get the results on Monday.

Yeah, they are BIG on viruses now,my daughter went for 2 1/2 weeks with the runs (w/o fever) and they said it was a virus...eventually she got over it and was fine...weak but fine.I've been to these doctors for 20 yrs and I was like..-what????I guess they really DO KNOW!!!Maybe,I still worry with all these scares of "odd" things going about-but I do agree with the lessening of antbiotics-if that makes since,I toook micro-biology and to me it makes sense.Don't worry momma you'll have a lot more to worry about.

The Isomel (sp?) formula for diareaha always worked for my 2 boys. Try a day of just clear liquids and then start on just the formula for a day before you start solids again. The formula is hard to find but CVS usually has it ask the pharmacist. Good luck.

9 days with diahrrea and vomiting is way too long for a small child. He could get dehydrated. When you go to the pediatrician I would insist he take some tests. If he doesn't, and you can, I would go to another pediatrician. Your son could have a parasite that is causing this, giardia comes to my mind. Good luck!

A little about me: I'm 46 years old, have 4 grown children, a 3 year old grandson, and I run a home daycare. I've seen it all!

When my now 5 year old was about a year old he had the same thing happen. It lasted about a month. The Dr. told me it was completely normal and sometimes it just takes a LONG time for babies to get over stomach bugs. She said partly b/c they always have their hands, fingers, and whatever else in their mouths. As long as he is not losing weight and is keeping down some meals and fluids (not getting dehydrated), he should be good and it will clear up. It is frustrating to go through! Hope he feels better soon!

If you read the entire thread, about 3/4 of the mom's have unfortunately experienced the same sort of thing with their child(ren). I also experienced this with my 9mo old about a month ago ... 10 days that he had either diarrhea or vomiting (or both). It is a common sickness for children this age and at this time of year. I think sometimes we are quick to dismiss our pediatricians knowledge because they may have suggested something (often related to parenting) that we may not agree with (thus leading us to think they are boneheads). BUT they are the experts when it comes to diseases and disorders so in these cases I put a bit more faith in them. Obviously you have to watch for dehydration (count his wet diapers) but most likely your pediatrician is correct and this bug will soon run its course. GOOD LUCK!!

Hello V., my son was about 1 1/2 years old when he had
the roto virus. I am not sure if i spelled that correctly.
The symptoms you described sounds exactly what he had.
My son was dehydrated, is yours? He was in the hospital
for a whole week. They had him on an IV, and constantly
taking samples of his blood, and stools. You say he has had
these symptoms for 9 days, i would take him back to the
pediatrician, and possibly get a second opinion on what
he may have. Good luck and i hope things clear up.

My daughter had the same type of flu bug in the middle of January when she was 9 months old as well. It lasted for about nine days and I called my pediatrician several times during that nine day period and they kept telling me it was a stomach virus and that it would go away. Well it did but it was still hard to watch my little one vomit (three times in the nine day period) and have diahrrea. But I thought the same thing you did-that nine days was an awfully long time to have the stomach virus but according to my pediatrician it was just a stomach virus that was lasting longer than some other viruses that were going around.

Pediatrician definately, is he teething? Is he chewing shoes or toys that are soiled? He could have a form of salmonella or something like that. My nephew's dtr had it from contact with the floor his work boots were on. Diarhhea vomiting etc. Be sure he gets clear fluids. Apple sauce can cause diarhea. So can acid fruit juices. See if his stomach settles in 24 hours and return him gently to foods, see if he reacts to a certain food.. Always wash bottles of any food product before storing and rinse them just before use.

My duaghter vomits everytime I try to feed her rice cereal or oatmeal. Projectile vomit for several hours but not days!

My 14 month old had it for days.....ask your dr. About acidophilus capsules. They are all natural and they help to balance the bodies natural flora. You can get them at whole foods in the refrigerator section.
Also, if your babe is suffering from a raw bottom because of the diarreah, try a half a cup of distilled white vinegar in a tub (3 or 4 inches of plain water) and just let the child soak for a few minutes. By the time you bring the baby out of the tub to get dressed, their bottom will be slightly brown. It works that quickly to start to help scab.
My dr. Made these suggestions to me and after 6-7 days of this it was a welcomed relief!!!!!

There is honestly nothing you can do but keep him hydrated Tylenol my son weighs 17.5 pounds and the doc said 0.8 mg every 5-7 hours there is also this stuff called Emetrol for nausea I woul give a very little amount to help ease that. but I would also try to warm up the pedialyte because the cold might hit his stomach hard and up it comes. Try also weak warm tea any tea will be fine add a little sugar. but keep trying.. and my final idea is zweiback toast in the baby food aisle it is just dry toast. let me know if I was of any help.

What type of formula are you using? A milk base or non-milk like a soy formula? When my son was an infant he too had similar symptoms, they finally did allergy testing and we found he had a milk allergy. I am not saying this is what your son's problem is but it may be worth asking your pediatrician.

Hi there! It sounds like your little one is dehydrated or at last nearing that state! Something similar happened with my daughter when she was a little under a year old and the doctor suggested that I give her an ounce of pedialyte every 15 minutes. It seems everything is just too rough on his little body. I think I did that for a full 24 hour period and then tried giving her formula, but she threw that up. So I went back to the pedialyte routine and then I tried her with a soy formula...only a little at a time, no matter how much he might want it. Anyhow, she kept the soy formula down and I kept her on that in small doses for about a day and gradually switched back to her regular formula. This seemed to do the trick for me. I know you said the formula thing hasn't worked, but try the pedialyte routine first and if he is able to keep that down after a day, give him only a little bit of formula. Basically, you are resetting their body. Granted every 15 minutes was a little rough, but it worked for me.
This happened again with my daughter recently (she is now 2 1/2) and she had diarrhea for like 10 tens, and when I called in they said that it just needs to run its course. Again they suggesting "resetting" her system by giving her foods like bananas, rice, oatmeal, plain potatoes, applesauce and water. The key here was VERY bland foods that would not irritate her bowels. That little bit is just for future reference when he is older :)
If you don't fell comfortable with this or what your doctor has to say I would go to another doctor for a second opinion. Go with your gut instinct :)

I know how you feel. I had my 3 1/2 year old and my 18 month old have diarrhea for 3 months straight. Yes, 3 months!! I didn't know what to do either, but all you can do is keep them hydrated and make sure they are eating. If you haven't given him any pedialyte, do so. That can be expensive though, so I'd recommend propel or gatoraid or even diluted koolaid (clear flavor). It could be a bug, but there is really no way of telling. Also try using the BRATT diet for a while and see if that helps. If you're not sure what that is, it is Bananas, Rice, Apples, Tea, Toast. They have lots of fiber in them to help with diarrhea. I had to also switch my son to rice milk as it is easier to digest for him. It worked. Just use common sense medicine and you'll be fine. You'll probably stress a little, but that is what friends are for. Good Luck and if you need anything, let me know.

Here's an some advice I got from a pediatrician when I was in nursing school. Follow these directions exactly.

Get a bag of frozen blackberries. Put one cup of blackberries in a small sauce pan. Add one-half cup water. NO SUGAR. Boil gently for five minutes. Strain cooked berries, separating the berriies from the liquid. Discard berries. Cool remaining liquid. Divide liquid into two ounce servings. Offer liquid to baby at baby's preferred temperature. Do Not combine liquid with any other juices.

Continue feeding baby whatever diet the baby is tolerating as discussed with your pediatrician. Give (blackberry) liquid at non-meal times. If this is going to work, it usually does so within two doses (four ounces), but can be given three times (morning-noon-night) for three days. If the diarrhea hasn't stopped by then, it's not going to work for your baby.

And, here's why: this treatment was used when we had no means of providing intravenous fluids to babies..no pediatric-sized needles. So, the babies were in hospital, with professional supervision. In those cases we made the babies NPO (non par os; nothing by mouth). They got the "blackberry" juice every two hours, two ounces X four doses = 8oz. Followed by typical anti-diarrhea diet (such as you describe). As a nurse, not being able to see your baby or knowing you, I don't feel safe advising you to use the more radical treatment. And, I doubt you'll find anyone alive & practicing who remembers before infant IVs.

Still, it did work. Also, your pediatrician is correct. It will go away on it's own. It is a virus; your baby is fighting it...successfully based on your description. It does just take patience (yours). And, honestly, I've seen it last as long as a month. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Good hand washing by all is a MUST...with every single diaper change, before feeds. Soap & water, no exceptions.

Hi V.!
Is your son teething? When my son was 8 months old he started teething & had the most horrible diahrea. It was so bad that it scalded his little butt. I was told the same thing, as many liguids as possible & I went through a whole tub (not tube) of Desitin (it's thick & stays on longer). The one bad thing is the formula but he has to have it - you know when you have the same problem the first thing they tell you is stay away from any dairy products. If he's not teething, I would get a second opinion.
Good Luck!

I'm really sorry to hear he is having such a hard time with it. I do know exactly how you feel. My son if he were to get sick would always get a version of the same thing. Most likely a rotovirus or something like that my doctor said. It would take at least a week to two weeks most of the time to run it's course. Anything dairy would usually make it worse for the first week. Toast or plain crackers is good if he can munch on them. I know you hate to see him sick but the more fluids the better. Good luck, I think it is harder for us then them at that age.

My son had a similar virus last year. After several days of diahrrea and vomiting, he was rushed to the ER for dehydration. During this time frame, I realized he had a dairy intolerance. Everytime he started to get better, I would give him a little yogart and milk-based formula. That is when the vomiting would start all over again. I ended up taking dairy completely out of his diet. He started feeling better in a couple days. I then started him on rice milk. Rice milk is very easy to digest and can be found in Whole Foods and Harris Teeter. He is now back on dairy one year later. Good luck!

Hi Venessa,

When I was a baby I was a very sickly child and use to have all the simptoms that your 9 1/2 month old son has. My parents took me to several hospital and the one hospital that got it under control gave me Jell-O, chicken broth and a baby formula called Klim. However, that was a long time ago and I don't believe they sell that formula in the United States, but you can try the chicken broth, Jell-O.

Also, a couple years ago I developed gastroenteritis and was taken to the hospital and they prescribed some of the same things (Jell-O, chicken broth and Gatorade) and it worked again.

Hi V.. I can relate to your problem! My son 8 months old has had diarrhea for almost 3 weeks now. It has been awful! Luckily we have not had the throwing up but we have had 3 days of fever in the beginning. The last few days I stopped breastfeeding and gave him Similac Isomil DF (diarrhea formula)SOY BASED FORMULA (rite aid it was difficult to find). I have also been feeding him the BRAT diet and finally the diarrhea has stopped. If the formula you are feeding him is milk-based you may have a longer road ahead of you. Most of my diet is dairy based because I am a picky eater. Unfortunatly, when you are sick or have diarrhea milk is the last thing you want to drink. Cows milk is difficult to digest therefore making it more difficult for your baby's bowels to heal. That is my experience. My only other advice is wash don't wipe..it cuts down on the diaper rash and buy some butt paste, its a miracle product! Oh and of course try and keep him/her hydrated, but I'm sure you know that.
The following is a part of an article from kellymom.com on vomiting and diarrhea.
"Anytime there is diarrhea (in adults as well as babies) it can take a while for the bowel to heal and the stools to get back to normal. So even if you identify the problem and take corrective action, you may not see favorable results for a few weeks. This is because if the bowel gets irritated it is harder for the bowel to digest lactose - the undigested lactose then actually creates more irritation and runny stools... it can be tough to turn around at times. There is usually an inflammatory response with diarrhea - that is the part that takes time to heal. When the cause of the problem is removed (when baby recovers from the illness), the gut will heal even if the baby is still fed breastmilk. More here on secondary lactose intolerance."

Ok V., cut out the diluting everything. You are putting more liquid into his body causing more diahrrea. Keep with regular thick formula. Rice cereal, and toast if he will chew on it. Depending on what stage he's in. No juice especially apple juice. cut pedialyte to once a day only to keep him hydrated. Good luck and let it run it's course.

The pedialyte will not stop the diarhea but will keep him from becoming dehydrated. Stop giving him the applesauce as this is considered a laxative and will only make the diarhea worse. Cheese and bananas are normally the most natural way to stop diarhea as they don't really have anything over the counter for a 9 month old baby.

I think all of us with a young child have experienced the rotavirus the last couple of months :( It took us 11 days to get rid of it, and my son went from 25 lbs to 21.5 in a week and a half... and the dr still said it just had to run its course!
A couple of tips... get the huggies overnight diapers for night time. It will keep the diarrhea from leaking as bad, and if you combine that with the thicker one piece pjs, it makes night time cleanup a lot easier!
My son is allergic to dairy, so he drinks soy milk, but we switched him to rice milk while he was sick. It was the only thing he would take in that he didn't vomit back up. It's not in any way a sub for formula, but it is good for a couple of days to get him rehydrated. Above everything else, sanatize constantly!!! Otherwise, you and your older one may get it, and then the baby can catch it all over again! That's why this virus hits daycares so hard, it is extremely contagious! Good luck, and it will get better!

I know it sounds crazy and your the one dealing with the mess and all that comes along with a child with diahrrea but my son (back when he was about 8 months old or so - now he is 4) had diahrrea for about a month. I am not exaggerating. The tested his stool and everything and it was all fine. I truely sympathize with you and what your going through but it did go away and he was fine. I know with my son his mood was not affected (only mine was) and I strongly monitored his eating and drinking so he wouldn't get dehydrated. If you as a mother feels strongly about wanting to know more ask for a stool test. They can check for parasites, bacterias, etc. If nothing comes up question the possibility of food allergies. You may need to go back to sqaure one with feeding so you can see individual reactions. It is stressful and messy but hang in there and go with your gut feeling - ask all the questions you have and don't settle for answers your not comfortable with/ Good Luck!!

Both of my kids have it. I even had a touch of it myself. If you're giving formula, don't dilute it! The calories and nutrients are not as bioavailable as breastmilk and any bit of it he can keep down is a good thing. Try the BRAT diet with pedialite. If you breastfeed at all, offer the breast more often since breastmilk is considered a clear liquid like juice, tea, water and pedialite and it has the calories he needs.

My 14 months old just has diarrhea for almost a week, too. My 3 yo just had vomiting for 3 days, but I think it's a virus.

But anyway. I give my children 'Lactinex' when they have diarrhea. It supports the stomach environment. My pediatrician also recommends it when they have to take antibiotics and then they are more likely not getting diarrhea with antibiotics.

'Lactinex' is a powder you have to give with applesauce or any other cereal.

Not every pharmacy has it. I buy it at a small pharmacy called medcine chest in McLean.

Hope your son gets better soon.

Assuming that he has not had a problem with this formula or milk and/or any of those foods before, it sounds like a stomach bug. Nine days is way too long for this to go on and it would sound that dehydration is a real concern at this point. If you are not happy with "he'll get over it" (I wouldn't be), I would take my son to the hopspital or at least get a 2nd opinion.

Personally, my doctor would NEVER let it go on this long. His immediate recommendation would be the following:

1st day - STOP ALL FOOD! Give Gatorade, KoolAid, weak tea, water, Pedialyte (or equivalent).
2nd day - add bananas, peaches, pears (maybe applesauce)
3rd day - add vegetables
4th day - add meats
5th day - Regualr diet
6th day - add cereals

NO MILK FOR 1 WEEK!

If at any of these steps the vomitting and/or diarrhea continued, he has me hold off on the next step. If necessary, Immodium can be given (have a doctor calculate the amount of liquid Immodium to give...I once had to give some to my son when he was under 6 months of age...he is now 16 years old). If none of this works, my doctor would have me at the hospital (which can be scary but it is for the good of the child).

I am under the impression that the notices I get are from Mom's in my area (Delaware), if that is the case...I recommend Dr. Bacchus ###-###-#### in Dover, DE.

V., when my children have had this the only way I was able to stop it was to cut all milk. Even soy formula has milk proteins. I know this is hard, but it was the quickest way I found. Try just water or diluted apple juice. Continue any solids that he eat. Just no milk. It should take about 3 days. Good Luck!

HI V.,

Is your son able to keep liquids down? When my son was almost a year old he went through a 2 week period where he was vomiting and had diarrhea. As soon as he would take in liquids he wouldn't through up but he would have liquid diarrhea, so naturally we were worried and took him to the ER one night. The doctor gave him some jiuce and since he kept it down they said he would be fine and to just let it run its course. So although I don't have any suggestions for you except to keep giving him liquids and trying foods easy on the stomach, like you are doing,I hope my story eases your mind a little bit. If he doesn't show any signs of getting better maybe take him back in 3 or 4 days. I hope that he gets to feeling better soon.

Ciao V.!
My daughter is 8 months old and has had a few similar episodes. There is a stomch bug going around at her daycare now that has the same symptoms. When she's sick anything that has a texture to it invokes her gag reflex, so she vomits everything up. It may be that the food is causing your little one to gag and throw up.
About the diarrhea, she's had several episodes of ear infections in which she had to take antibiotics. The antibiotics always causes her diarrea. I give her Yo Baby yogurt. Yogurt has a bacteria that helps the digestive tract. I think the bacteria is called Lactobacillus Acidopholus. My baby is breastfeed and I would never dream of giving her cow's milk as I was allergic to it, but the doctor advocated the yogurt because its great for the digestive system and diarrhea. She's been getting it from 3 months old whenever she's taking the antibiotics. We don't give it to her on a regular basis. Just when she's got diarrhea. Additionally, it also helped settle her stomoach. I see you tried the applesauce, it usually helps too. However, Apple Juice is a stool softener and makes the situation worse. Also, when her stomach was upset, I mixed formula into a bottle of breastmilk for her. It gives her gas, but it also hardens stools and settles her stomach. Hope this helps.

S.

I would stop the fruit (applesauce) as it makes me go to the bathroom, too. Just for now. Also, I would give the baby some yogurt (don't worry about the fruit there, as it needs to taste good for him to eat it). Or put it in his cereal. Yogurt has good bacteria in it. Good luck and God Bless you both! Love, J.

Sorry to hear your little one is sick. Many babies get rotovirus this time of year. It can give them diarrhea for several weeks.
Sounds like you are doing the right things - keeping him hydrated. When my kids went thru that they biggest problems were keeping them hydrated and keeping their bottoms from having skin breakdown. Put your favorite diaper cream on your baby every diaper change and after bath and before bedtime.
The other issue with Rotovirus is many children have an intolerance to milk and milk products for a while after the virus. I would talk to your pediatrition and I suggest that you not give him full strength formula, dilute it with pedialyte.
Hang in there, this too shall pass.

I think that is a long time to have diahrrea if he is going a lot. I have 8 kids and 4 grandkids. You'll want to be sure he's not dehydrating. When you give him something like Pedialyte, try giving him a tablespoon and then wait at least 15 minutes before you give him more. This worked for my youngest, who is now 15, when he was a baby and was vomiting and nothing would stay down. Good luck!

Hi,
I went through a 14 day bout with my 7 month old....the pediatrician said it was rotovirus, and that 10-14 days is common. His appetite remained fine, and his dispostion was good as long as we changed his diaper quickly! We gave him rice and formula only during this time.

The pediatrician said if he started running a fever or refusing food to bring him back, but he never did. It was a long haul, but he was fine! Hope your baby is well soon!

V., I am not a doctor so I can't diagnose your son....but I can tell you that I just went through this with my baby as well! Diarrhea for over a week and vomiting (but the vomiting was sporadic...only once or twice a day). Is his diarrhea bright green and really foul smelling? My daughter was diagnosed with the rotavirus. I had to put her on a non-dairy diet and avoid sugar (including fruits and juices) for three days. It either worked or she was getting better anyways! Best of luck to you....hope your little one starts feeling better!

my son is 4years olds now but he went through something similar when he was 3 years old i would just contiune to do what your doing also (and it sounds nasty )but make a log on how often he goes ,what color it is, and what the consistance is and if it contiunes look into seeing a gastro doctor and bring all logs with you also include what he ate before he went to the bathrrom .

Do NOT go back to this same pediatrician! Clearly s/he doesn't recognize the potential dangers. Ask, no demand, a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist. I'm the grandmother of six, three of whom have celiac disease which was similarly misdiagnosed and mishandled. If it's nothing serious, you've invested the cost of a consult. On the other hand, you could be saving yourself and your child great distress.

Take him back to the Pediatrician. They should make sure that your child is not dehydrating with all this diarrhea and vomiting. Let them carefully exam your child before leaving their office.

I know this may sound crazy. He may be slightly dehydrated. I know when children get sick it is very important to keep them well hydrated. Its a horrible cycle with diahrrea. A virus can cause it then your child gets dehydrated from the virus which can cause more diahrea. This is what a few of my pediatricians have told me. We are military and I have had a few in our 15 years and 4 kids! I wouldn't give him applesauce. I did have a son that had a stomach bug for 7 days but not nine. Good luck and if you feel this doctor isn't helping maybe get a referral elsewhere. :-)

Hey V., hang in there! You're doing the right thing, going to the pros. My lil 11 mo old just got over hers after 7 days, just 2-3 loose bowels a day, a lil vomiting of pedialyte and our doc didn't seem concerned either. What turned it around 4 us was the rice cereal mixed w a lil applesauce but maybe your lil guys case is just a bit more severe if that didn't work? I WOULD ASK THE DOC ABOUT DILUTING THAT FORMULA, I WAS INSTRUCTED NOT, NOT, NOT to do that, though I though it was the right thing to do cuz when she was vomiting a few months ago from another bug :) they wanted us on pedilyte then diluted formula.
GOD BLESS us one and all on this journey. I'll b looking out to see how it turned out but you're doing the right thing heading back to the doc, we never went, they just never seemed concerned.

There is a nasty gastrointestinal bug that's been going around. My son had similar symptoms (vomiting and diahrrea) for almost 2 weeks. The pediatrician told me they'd seen other children his age (10 months) with smilar cases and to expect it to last up to 2 weeks. We stuck to Pedialyte, applesauce, and Cheerios for the time that he was vomiting and he's doing beautifully now. She did say to bring him back in if he had a fever, but my little guy didn't.

Good thing u r going back to the doctor today.. this also happened to my son when he was about 8 months old, it took over 2 weeks to clear up.. Just keep giving fluids and he will be fine... i know its really hard for a parent to watch their baby in this condition but it will be alrite... it could be a bug or it could be his digestive system getting use to a change... Good Luck

HI I am a single mother of a 6month old girl. my daughter has been sick for about 10 days as well. its a terrible bug going around. what worked for her to get her stomach back to normal was limiting her intake for 24hrs 4 oz of pedialyte every 2hrs. it was hard because she would scream and cry for more because she was hungry but i had to do it that way. after the first 24hrs i then gave her 1 1/2 servings of rice cereal made with the pedialyte 2x a day for 1 day and now we are on 4oz to 6ozs of formula diluted with 2-4 oz of pedialyte to dilute it. it has finally worked. nothing else was working and so far since last night when i introduced the formula back into her diet she has not thrown up, spit up or had diarrhea. she has had some VERY wet diapers though. hope this helps you! good luck!

there is immondium for kids on the market I just went through this with my 9th month old I gave have of a childs dose inthe am and once in the even and all are well and fine. Yes went to pediatrician they saw no infection and chalked it up to teething etc and it wasn't the rotavirus. So I talked to a friend of mine who was nurse and recommended Immodium for kids. Like i said I gave a little or half of a child dose. my daughters height weight is equal to the child dose I don't know how much your chid weight so give a little less. DO NOT GIVE PEPTO FOR KIDS to infants. That was her advice.
