Sick for the holidays--To Go or Not to Go?

Just curious---If you or your children have the common cold do you still go to visit family for Christmas? Reason I'm asking is that my husband seems to remember not going to see other people at all when he was sick and I don't remember ever missing a holiday when we had colds as kids. What about your family?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the feedback:) There are much older relatives involved with health issues a possibility so we are going to keep to ourselves and reschedule even though the girls just have a simple cold w/no fever. We'd hate to cause one of them to get a serious secondary infection from their cold. We'd probably go if not for that. Interesting to see there are some differences in opinion here

common colds and coughs. NO biggie. Go.
Anything associated with body fluids coming out north and south ends, and fevers. NO go.

If it's just a common cold, and not a fever, the flu, or a stomach virus I would still go. If I were hosting, I wouldn't mind people coming with just colds. My kids have almost constant colds all winter anyway.

I wouldn't worry about a cold unless someone you are seeing has health issues and could become seriously ill from a cold.

It depends. Like if we are seeing one of my husband's grandparents who are more prone to get sick and get it worse we'll keep the kids or ourselves home. Otherwise if it's just a cold we go and try to make sure hands are washed.

If it's truly just a cold, no fever, no major sore throat, etc. then yes, go. Tis the season...everything is going around right now and you're coming into contact with all these germs everyday. If he's the one sick, tell him to take cold medicine and suck it up!!!!

i had a cold on thanksgiving this year. i went to see family. i just made sure to stay away from the little ones and not share my drink even by accident. i was too tired and worn out to go to the next family's house though and went home while my hubby took the kids to see his family afterwards.

no, we stay home and cuddle up and rest. just not fair to the people and to us if we were to do that. when you are sick, cold or something else you are just not up to partying an socializing. plus i'd hate it if we caught something that could have been prevented.

Just asked my Mom (she hosting this year) what she wanted to do. My grandmother, suffered from meningitis last year due to ignoring an ear infection she got from a cold will also be at their house this weekend.

I have a horrible head cold, the kids are getting over theirs, but there is a lot of snot, a lot. The kids are thankfully starting to dry up, but I'm constantly blowing my nose. I asked her what she wanted to do, since normally we would go and just do our normal cold precautions.

she said my grandma would be horribly disappointed if we didn't show. so we will be getting a face mask for her and keep our distance. If a fever or anything else develops we will have to cancel.

I truly don't ever remember being sick as a kid, or putting off Christmas, but now that I'm raising my own, I found myself thinking we should cancel a lot more than we have. Generally though, I leave it up to the hostess just let them know what's going on and if they still want us to come or not.

If you kids have a cold and there are other children, sick and/or elderly people around, don't take them.

My brother in law is a cancer survivor, but his immune system is not strong, he gets colds in a snap.

The elderly are very susceptible as well.

Stay home with sick kids.

Blessings.....

If we just have colds, we go and try to be as clean and germ free as possible. If it's more than that, then we would probably cancel.

I don't recall us ever being sick for the holidays (knock on wood!) but if it was just a common cold, I would definitely still go. Any fever, vomitting or diahrrea (sp?) would require staying home.

I think it depends on who is going, who they are going to see, and how sick the person is. If it is basically immediate family and the sick person is just not feeling great (not really contagious) definately still go. If they are contagious/very sick, you must make sure they are up to going and that those in attendance (not just the host) is ok w/ the risk but really I would keep my child home.

If there's no fever, we go. If there's a fever, we stay home. If there's anything "oozing" or contagious, we stay home. Just a cold, take some Dimetap and go!

I don't recall ever being sick at Christmas time. Same with my children. Other holidays, yes; Christmas, no.

I would always advise calling the family host/hostess and asking. Sometimes people will say, "Come on ahead," and sometimes they won't.

We have a "situation" this year: most of us are gathering at one home for Christmas dinner and presents. However, that home has had colds in it for a week. I hope they are all well by Christmas Day, because if Granddaughter #4 (from another family) catches a cold, she might endanger her other grandfather, whom she is visiting right after Christmas, because he is very ill and his immune system is very compromised. We're not sure how this will work out yet.

Long story short: call. And if it isn't advisable for the sick child to go, have a plan B ready. I remember an Easter when our youngest child contracted chicken pox; the rest of the family went to the wonderful Easter buffet at the beautiful restaurant, and Master Pox and I celebrated with drive-through fast food....

If there is a fever of 101.0 or higher we do not expose others to the germs. If it is 100. or less we might go if the symptoms were not horrid. A runny nose or simple cough is a lot different than continuous coughing and green snot running down the chin each time they breath in and out...lol.

It would depend on how severe with no fever.
