Hi ladies (and couple of token males)
My 9 month old son is sick, has been for over a week. We've been to the doc 2X. He's getting better, on antibiotics for a double ear infection. Poor little man.
Anyways - I am having serious cabin fever. We haven't been going for our daily walks because it's cold here, and I'm worried this is bad for him.
What do you think? If I wrap him well? He has a cold. He had a fever which is gone now, and then just a cold. But he coughs alot and is very snotty.
(We have the humidifier going 24/7 in his room. And it is like a steam room in there. Nice and warm and steamy...)

Second question is he was not nursing well during the fever time but when this ended, nursed like himself again. Now today not nursing well AT ALL. And he's so fussy!!!

What to do?

He's also teething. I am giving him a cold frozen teething ring first but still he does not want to nurse.

What can I do next?

I wouldn't take him out in the cold, would you want to be bundled up and taken outside if you weren't feeling well? I understand the cabin fever, but don't think it's worth it. Cold air and chest congestion isn't a good combination, it'd most likely make him cough even more. As for the nursing, as long as he is having wet diapers as frequently as normal and is not showing any signs of dehydration, don't worry too much. Offer it frequently, pump if you need to, and let the little guy get some rest. Does he drink from a sippy? You can give him breastmilk or water in it to keep him hydrated. Laying down to nurse might make him uncomfortable, sitting up with a cup might be a good way to get some fluids/calories in him. Good luck, hope he is feeling better soon!

It hurts his ears to suck. They hurt. Once he feels better he will eat.

I always took my little ones out for walks in the winter...I can't say enough about the benefits of fresh air! Bundle him up and go.

As far as the nursing , its totally normal to have a decreased appetite when stuffy/sick, just keep offering.

I would take him out for a short walk. In the middle of the day when its the warmest. A change of scenery and some fresh air would do everybody some good.

He is probably just nursing less b/c he doesnt feel well. Offer it often. Little sips now and then are better than nothing. Pump if you need to alleviate discomfort.

Hang in there!

In terms of nursing, maybe you could try new positions? I have a friend who nursed her son sitting up in her lap from about 4 months on. That may hurt his ears less?

I guess you'll get differing opinions on taking the baby out in the cold. I would follow your instincts--personally, for me, I think if it were below 40, I would stay in if he's sick. And a tip I got from my pediatrician's wife...she said when she had a winter baby, she would put a hot water bottle in the stroller with the baby for extra warmth. Why didn't I ever think of that?! Good luck to you.

Our pediatrician always recommended a cool mist humidifier, not a warm mist one. Warm air breeds germs. That could be why it's taking so long for your little guy to get better. As for getting outside for a little, I don't think it's a bad idea. As long as he's dressed appropriately & has his ears covered, the fresh air might do him some good. I just would limit the time outside to 10/15 minutes or so.
